ORAL vs Dim Coast presente / presents A new generation of Japanese sound artists Kanta Horio (live) . Taeji Sawai (live) Atsuhiro Ito (Optron . live) . Dim Koast (dj) mercredi 19 Avril / Wednesday April 19 . 10 $ Zoobizare . 6388 St-Hubert . Montréal . 20h30 / 8:30 PM TAEJI SAWAI The sounds of our multi-functional daily existence are supplied by various information systems. Sawai explores the possibilities of a total auditory design derived from these unconsciously experienced sounds by mixing and amplifying them into extreme ultra- or infrasonic frequencies, confounding our usual sensory division of sound into "waves perceptible by hearing" and "vibration perceptible through touch." As a participant in portable [k]ommunity, Taeji Sawai creates electronic art "with the use of bugs or effects like bugs produced by large amounts of high quality data." Sawai has also performed with cell/66b and aeo, along with Eye from The Boredoms and Kazuhiro Jo of SWQ, appearing at venues ranging from Ars Electronica to John Zorn's birthday party. EM#2 (KANTA HORIO) A large electromagnet is connected to an audio amplifier used as an electric power amplifier. The audio signals input into the amplifier cause significant rise in the magnetic field. A large number of paper clips are set under the electromagnet that is dangled on a mic stand and audio signals actuate the paperclips. Various patterns of paperclip motion are generated by different frequencies of the audio signal. The state of the paperclips is recorded with a video camera and displayed in real time on a screen behind the performer. Kanta Horio studied acoustics and sound art at the Kyushu Institute of Design in Fukuoka. He builds various junk gadgets and contraptions with or without electronic devices and presents sound/visual performances with them and a laptop computer. OPTRON (ATSUHIRO ITO) "Whirr Extreme Optical Noise Core that consists of the Anomaly Hard-core Punk approach, and the original sound optical instrument, OPTRON that outputs amplified noise discharged by fluorescent lights. Thoroughly original in the respects of without using melody playing instruments and live performance that is not gentle to the eyes or ears either." -- Atsuhiro Ito Atsuhiro Ito is perhaps best known as the founder and organizer of the Tokyo gallery/free space Off Site, a crucial venue for the Japanese onkyo music scene. Since 1998 he has been presenting sound performances with fluorescent lighting using a musical device of his own invention, the optron. These salon-style concerts focus mainly on live performances of ambient, noise and experimental music in a comfortable and intimate setting. This month we have planned a special showcase of tones and drones. First up will be Panospria labelmates Various and Scant Intone, once again performing as a duo for the first time since opening for Akumu in 2004. Their set will be followed by the hypothermic drones of Wapstan, who is also operator of Brise-Cul Records. The night will conclude after a performance by Kolumkilli, who will submerge listeners in an ethereal world of deep, droning soundscapes. |

Textures is a series of deep-listening events held on the last Saturday of each month at Pharmacie Esperanza. These salon-style concerts focus mainly on live performances of ambient, noise and experimental music in a comfortable and intimate setting. Below are the details for this month when we'll have the pleasure of two Montreal debuts. The first will be the ambient stylings of Clonal Machina, who has recently relocated from San Francisco. The second performance of the evening will be the first live collaboration between I8U and Tomas Phillips, in anticipation of their upcoming release Anther on [ www.petitesono.com ] Sono. Samedi, 28 Janvier 2006 / Saturday, January 28 2006 TEXTURES_03: [ www.petitesono.com ] / Tomas Phillips + [ www.clonalmachina.com ] Machina La Salle D'Attente (Pharmacie Esperanza), 5490 St-Laurent 21h / 9 pm, 3$ -- [ www.i8u.com ] I8U’s audio art can be qualified as "sound-sculpture". It reveals powerful, opaque and complex sound environments where analog and digital meet. Her web art can be said to follow a parallel path, incorporating both musical and visual elements. I8U's musical path is rather special. From classical music to the blues, it took only one chance meeting with David Kristian to get her involved in electronic music. Her work continues to evolve as technologies enable her to create in new environments. TOMAS PHILLIPS Tomas Phillips has composed electronic and electro-acoustic music since his first solo contribution to the Shadow Tape compilation in 1994. He has since released limited edition cd-r’s under the names Sea Optic, Lisbon and Eto Ami (in collaboration with Dean King). In 2002, Eto Ami created the sound design for choreographer Steve Paxton’s Flat, under the direction of Julee Snyder, in Carborro N.C. 2003 saw the release of Tomas’ On Dit on Trente Oiseaux. Selected performances: the Feather Net gallery in Raleigh, N.C. (2002), the Société Des Arts Technologique in Montreal, Quebec (2003), the Monument National in Montreal to accompany the 2003 production of Sarah Kane’s Crave (with J. Winston Phillips), an Eto Ami playback presentation at the Overgaden Sound Art Festival in Copenhagen (2004), a Technopera, in conjunction with Tobias C. van Veen and the McGill University Opera Company (Montreal, 2004) and the Placard Headphones Festival (Montreal 2005). Current and future projects include collaborative releases with Tobias c. van Veen (If Not, Winter, and/OAR 2005), Chantale Laplante (Chair Bell Floor 2006), i8u (Anther, Petite Sono 2006) and Dean King (À Travers le Bord 2006). [ www.clonalmachina.com ] MACHINA Originating as part of the Real Ambient Movement in San Francisco, Clonal Machina is now based in Montreal. The music started in SF, experimenting with sound, different types of instruments and the creation of a short wave radio/loop machine. His sound is makes extensive use of field recordings and sound bytes. The roots of the music are with the musical philosophies of Brian Eno and John Cage as well as Luigi Russollo and the Futurist movement. |
