Campstock is this summer's best kept secret

[ campstockparty.com ]

There's something interesting happening near Dundalk Ontario this weekend. The first annual Campstock will take place over 3 days and 2 nights on an open field North of Toronto, August 22-25.

The 3 day party has all the elements of a live music festival that transforms into a late night EDM rave and includes fully serviced campgrounds directly onsite.

CampStock Music Group started in 2011 as a music tour around Summer camps. It gives young artists the chance to play in front of a guaranteed audience and the experience of what life is like on the road.

The event was created by Mitch Maters, Ryan Freedman and Matt Sobhy and it's purpose is too help support the CampStock Music Tour and help raise money for The Music Therapy Program at Sick Kids Hospital.

Besides the impressive line up (see below) the festival is unique in that it offers a community vibe full of daily activities.

"Festival goers can experience an array of daily activities". Explains music director Masters. "you can dip in one of the 16 pools, cruise down our 100 ft. slip n' side, play a round of volleyball or participate in many of our crazy games."

A hot beach oasis, beer pong and the crowning of the official king and queen of the festival are only some of the other unique experiences available. There is also a thrift shop for local merchandise not to be found anywhere else.

Food trucks, water, washrooms, safety and security are all on-site making it as safe and comfortable as possible.

The line up is a mix of EDM, Rock and Pop and include the always controversial punk/ska band The Johnstone's and DJ Overwerk who performed at this year's VELD Festival in Downsview park.

The talent doesn't stop there: Dr. Ozi, Shaun Frank, A-Lo, Domeno, D3FF & AKTCH, Neon Knights and local favourite DJ Joe Ghost will be playing until midnight each night, followed by a Camp Fire Acoustic session with Eric Ethridge.

Techno Colour Dreams Paint Party will be onsite to provide the Saturday night entertainment.

Biodiesel (live Drums & Bass)
[ www.biodieselband.com ] Band

BioDiesel lies in razor-thin space between band and DJ, synthetic and human, man and machine. The duo is an inventive collaboration between Johnny Rabb (pioneer of the freehand technique & the original World’s Fastest Drummer) and Clay Parnell (Brother's Past & go-to bassist in the Live Electronic genre) Naturally, when you take a world-class drummer and a celebrated bassist who are also passionate producers, the elements are there for a super-charged ensemble that shatters boundaries and dares to take the musical genres they explore to thrilling new places. Blowing the doors off a theatre or working a festival audience into a frenzy … BioDiesel is the cutting edge of tangible electronic music.

BREAKESTRA feat. Afrodyete (L.A., Strut)
[ www.breakestra.com ] Welcome To The Breakestra Website ::
If we were to construct a family tree of LA bands, Breakestra would be mentioned in the same breath as Weapon of Choice, Very Be Careful. Jurassic 5, Fishbone, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction and Ozomatli. These bands began in backyard jam sessions and random open mics held throughout the city from Echo Park to Venice, Highland Park to Topanga Canyon. Those early days were just after the ’92 Riots. Musicians from all over the city became tighter and many experimental jam sessions occurred fusing genres like funk, hip-hop, rock and acoustic soul resulting in truly innovative, multiculturaL music. Musical friendships between cats like Miles, Mixmaster Wolf, Cut Chemist, Peaunut Butter Wolf, Carlos Guaico and many others became the seeds for landmark clubs and two indie record labels that still flourish to this day. Original members of the Breakestra have gone on to either play or write songs for/with the Black Eyed Peas, Macy Gray, The Rebirth, Dakah, the list goes on.

The current Breakestra live show line-up for 2011 is:

Miles Tackett, bassist/cellist & vocalist
Mix Master Wolf -soul shoutin’, sangin’ & percussion
Afrodyete the african goddess of funky soul & love-vocals & percussion
Jud Mcdaniel of (Simple Citizens)-guitar & bass
Pat “The Snake” Bailey - guitar (also the guitarist for The Rebirth)
Chuck Boogie-Fender Rhodes, organ & percussion
Nate Ketner & David Moyer- Saxophones & flute
Jason Pipkin, John Montgomery & Miles Senzaki- drums

BEARDYMAN
[ en.wikipedia.org ]

The overwhelmingly talented Darren Foreman is Beardyman.

UK BEATBOX CHAMPION…

Beardyman career began by smashing up the standard for beatboxing, becoming the heavyweight UK champion, ticking the WIN box twice for title of UK Beatboxer back to back in 2006/07. In 2008 he was the judge.

LIVE MUSIC PRODUCTION…

But Beatboxing has its musical limits so Beardyman went a step further to inject it full of knife‐edge music technology. Using up to 4 Korg Kaoss Pad IIIs and state of the art looping technology enables him to improvise live on stage to create tracks that that may take weeks in the studio, using the very vanguard of Live Music Production to build sonic soundscapes; a pistol duel at dawn with the capabilities of top DJs. Like some sort of musical Victor Frankenstein, on stage he works the sonic vernacular into mind‐expanding mashups using the sole instrument of his voice. His diversity and ability to musically evolve makes his skills truly exciting, probably the reason guru Rob Da Bank calls him “literally the most entertaining live human being I’ve seen in donkey’s years”.

NEW MODEL ARTIST…

Casting off the traditional shackles of the music industry, and using the very apex of cutting edge technology in his performances and marketing, Beardyman is a revolutionary in the media platforms he uses and is at the forefront of a new movement that is redefining the silhouette of what a musical act should be in the digital world of Web 2.0 and 3.0. Without a record deal he has played to hundreds of thousands of fans and gained a database of over 50,000 online subscribers across his interactive fan sites.

YOUTUBE SUPERSTAR…

Beardyman is widely known for being a YouTube “Star”, famed for his comedic and jaw‐dropping virals beginning with Kitchen Diaries which has garnered over 5 MILLION views.

Kitchen Diaries: [ www.youtube.com ]

In the truest sense of the word viral, the talents of Beardyman have pervaded every last corner of the globe, gaining tens of millions of viewers, surfing into homes on the most prolific medium of the 21st century. In November 2008 Beardyman was beamed LIVE into your computer as a main headliner on the first ever streamed concert, YouTube Live, becoming a supernova of the world wide web and personal hero of the entire Google empire (owners of the earth).

Google offices: [ www.youtube.com ]

Pre Youtube Live and since, Beardyman has been personally invited several times to headline Google‘s international Zeitgeist, climate and internal development conferences.

FESTIVAL HEADLINER…

On stage Beardyman has been playfully twisting the brains of ravers the world over with his unique brand of beatboxing‐technological‐mash‐ups, leading them on sonic adventures with their addled minds. He’s graced the famed mainstages of Lovebox, Rise, Sonar by Night, Turning Point (the Roundhouse), Bestival, Snowbombing and many more, giving incredible performances that embraced the musical variety of the festival scene, memorably opening Glastonbury 2009 with a set in the Dance Village that was the flagstone for a sensational festival. His eye for talent has led him to join forces with artists of fearsome calibre, such as Fatboy Slim, Imogen Heap, Reggie Watts, Groove Armada, proving his dexterity as an artist. In November 2009 he made world history by performing and improvised show with a full sized orchestra in his collaboration with The Heritage Orchestra; sharing conducting duties with Jules Buckley, Beardyman used the sections of the orchestra as he would use his loopstation building full‐scale improvised tunage from Dubstep to Disco, House to Drum and Bass.

COMEDY TIMING…

Central to all Beardyman performances is a playful sense of humour. Well aware that his incredible career is based on his ability to “tune a raspberry”, Beardyman is able to make fun of himself and the audience with a natural comedic ability, leading to standing ovations at sell‐out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe festival 2009,
both with his own shows in the Udderbelly, Underbelly and at the Time Out comedy revue ‘For One Night Only’, as well as the Udderbelly on London’s South Bank proving an ability to cross over genres. In July 2010 Beardyman will be debuting at Montreal Comedy Festival: ‘Just For Laughs’.

BATTLEJAM…

Bringing it all home is Battlejam, Beardyman’s world‐renowned underground club night, which sees unprecedented quantities of ravers flock in unprecedented droves to clubs in London and Brighton, the respective hometowns of Beardyman and turntable mentalist and 2008 DMC Champion JFB. Battlejam is famous for its crowd interaction and quirky collaborations, between freestyle MCs, DJs and musicians. Ready to smash your expectations all over again, Beardyman is getting into the studio to record the stuff in his mind, and outside of the constraints of looping, the outcome should be intergalactic. The next step for Beardyman could well be one giant leap for mankind...

About DJ Nu-Mark
Juassic 5 // Blend Crafters
Los Angeles, CA

Nu-Mark began DJing as a teenager in Los Angeles. Over the course of the last two decades, he has amassed a collection of over 35,000 records and refined his technical skills and performance style to the point where he is widely recognized as one of the key figures in the late-90s DJ explosion that pushed the DJ to the front of the culture’s awareness. He has been featured in a diversity of publications and in several films: the critically acclaimed documentary “Scratch,” “KeepinTime” (which features impromptu collaborations with Mad Lib, Cut Chemist, Babu, J-Rocc, and drummers James Gatson and Paul Humphrey), “Coachella: The Movie,” and “Rock the Bells – The Documentary.” His innovative DJ routines and creative on-stage antics have made him a favorite of crowds all over the world. Nu-Mark revels in surprising an audience with a forgotten gem, an unknown banger, or a fresh take on a well-known hit. From Sao Paolo to Sydney, from Toronto to Tokyo, Nu-Mark’s carefully crafted, explosively energetic DJ sets never fail to get a party rocking!

A member of the gold-selling hiphop collective Jurassic 5, Nu-Mark is responsible for half of the production of Jurassic 5’s entire body of work: Jurassic 5 EP (1997), Quality Control (2000), Power In Numbers (2002), and Feedback (2006). His most famous J-5 joints are the raw anthem “What’s Golden” and the smooth and soulful “Work It Out” featuring Dave Matthews. Known for their thrilling stage show, Jurassic 5 toured the globe several times over, and have made numerous television appearances. With Jurassic 5, Nu-Mark has performed at many of the world’s most important and exciting music festivals – Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza 2003, Australia’s Big Day Out, The UK’s Reading Festival, and Japan’s Summer Sonic – where his mastery of a complex, six-piece DJ rig and his playful incorporation of children’s musical toys have amazed and delighted crowds of up to 50,000 fans. Jurassic 5 has appeared alongside some of the biggest names in music, including: A Tribe Called Quest, the Wu-Tang Clan, Outkast, The Roots, Run DMC, Green Day, and even Bruce Springsteen.

Nu-Mark has also released his own projects: Blend Crafters, an instrumental album created in the spirit of allowing beats to speak for themselvesl and Hands On, a mix CD. Hands On assembles a diverse and eclectic set of sounds, everything from soulful breaks to comedic skits, as well as classic underground jams, and includes a special section devoted to hip-hop from around the world. By turns hilarious and impressive, this project displays both Nu-Mark’s eccentric sense of humor and his devotion to solid, simply dope music. Currently, Nu-Mark is placing his beats on a number of projects in a variety of genres.

About God Made Me Funky

Toronto based God Made Me Funky (GMMF) is a funky live ensemble, comprised of a diverse array of musicians ranging from a classically trained Jazz artist to street schooled Hip-Hop and RnB vocalists. With a common bond of moving crowds with their infectious energy, the band consists of Vocalists - Kaybe (Snow, Just Cool) and Lynzie Kent, Rapper - PHATT al (Len, Raggadeath), Keys - Danny Argyle, Bass - Cam Dougall (Graph Nobel, King Latifah), Guitar - Rich Grossman (Jimmy`s Groove), Trumpet - Benji Perosin (Directions), Sax - Arthur Kerekes (Monkey), and Drums - Alan Witz (Funky Hi-Life, Directions), who all share the passion of bringing the "Nu-Funk" sound into the next millennium.

Formed in 1996, GMMF started out as an instrumental funk fusion experiment. As the bands popularity grew, vocalists were added to increase the range of songs the band could cover. Influences including Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Sly and the Family Stone, Michael Jackson, Jamiroquai, the Roots, Afrika Bambatta, and D`Angelo were remixed with a `new school` sound, defining the bands unique style.

The band has further developed the NuFunk revolushun with the release of their third album `Enter The Beat` (2008). An eclectic mix of old school hip-hop with a new school twist; funk, rap, rock, and RnB come together to produce the band's "NuFunk" genre. GMMF continues to expand their musical reach with the first single, also titled "Enter The Beat", currently being featured in the new Coors Light media campaign.

About Big League Chu

Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada's breakbeat scene today. After over a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound - and it's one that crowds answer faithfully whether it's at his residencies at Toronto's legendary Breakfest events, The Make It Funky Jams, or the large one-off shows that Toronto boasts. In a city renowned as one of North America's largest party scenes, Chu has played alongside the worlds finest, allowing him to develop his own distinct style of breaks. Chu's sets can vary from hard beats to melodic funky down tempo sounds, but always remains a crowd mover. Chu is a mainstay for Toronto's largest party companies like Metro Productions (Kickit and Out of Hand), Lifeforce Industries (Dose, Syrous and Renegades), Empire, and Liquid Adrenaline. Chu is working on tracks again in the studio as we speak, so keep your ears to the ground on upcoming new beats!

Make It Funky was founded in 2005, when like-minded heads frustrated by the Toronto scene set out to create a party that could help the city put the funk back in its rump. What has help set Make it Funky apart is the combination of live band sets with a focus on DJs as a headliner, a move that has helped to create a fresh new cross over scene with an open-minded attitude. Make it Funky’s mission is to explore the funkier side of all things breakbeat. MiF promises and always delivers an exceptional night of music, dancing and good fun, with a focus on bringing the cutting edge of funk, breaks, hip hop, and beat-driven live music to the masses. Just a few of Make It Funky’s many highlight performers include: Afrika Baambaataa, Z-Trip, Krafty Kuts, The Herbaliser, Fort Knox Five, Ursula 1000, Killa Kella, and DJ A.Skillz and we are just getting started!

DJ Z-TRIP

Z-Trip is one of the biggest DJs of our time, doing over 100 shows a year, every year. Considered by many to be a founder of the mash-up movement, his musical tastes are eclectic and his mixing style rejects simple classification. His early independent releases have become highly sought after collectibles. Uneasy Listening, the collaboration with DJ P, was one of the first of its kind, and has sold for as much as $500 on eBay.

No other DJ can claim playing to 500,000 people opening for the Rolling Stones at Sars-stock in Toronto, playing the Bonaroo main stage to over 70,000 people 2 years in a row, in addition to headlining a tent at Coachella twice. He's also been busy around the world doing the Good Vibrations Festival in Australia 2006, as a headliner. All of this in addition to his US and international headlining sold out shows, and multiple club residencies.

Z-Trip's major label debut "Shifting Gears" was given 4 stars by Rolling Stone—it's highest honor. The first single "Walking Dead" went Top 20 and featured Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. The album also had two Number 1s on the college chart. "Listen to the DJ" featuring Soup of Jurassic 5 and "Shock and Awe" featuring Chuck D. He's also a master of the remix, with a stand out re-working of The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on "Motown Remixed".

Z-Trip can be seen in the movie "Scratch" (and "Scratch Live") alongside Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike and originators of the art form like Afrika Bambaataa and Jazzy Jay. In addition, he's appeared in "Brainfreeze" and "Product Placement", two live concert movies, both of which feature friends DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist.

King Sunshine

King Sunshine illuminates disco roots and drop inflections of funk and dance rhythms, reinventing house music and driving the whole fusion over the red line. Imagine nine musicians transformed into one live DJ. Comprised of keyboards/synths, heart pounding drums/percussion, deep bass, slick guitar, intense electronics, hefty horns and soulful vocals. King Sunshine has been lighting dance floors on fire since 1998 as a highly skilled and electric live act. KS has redefined the concert going experience. With the release of their second album Second Movement in fall 06, King Sunshine is poised to branch out to new segments of music lovers worldwide. Experiences at Canadas largest music festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2005 and 2006, Ottawa Blues Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Toronto Harbourfront Festivals and Nova Scotia's Evolve Festival has brought KS nationwide recognition. Years of sold out club shows and underground parties have led to shared stages with music's finest DJs, including Theo Parrish, DJ Sneak, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, Ron Trent and Little Louis Vega. King Sunshines raw explosive energy takes dance music off of vinyl and brings it to the live stage. Emulating a DJ approach by building up their climaxes and breakdowns, and mixing their songs together into one continuous seamless set of music. People have described their concerts as deep and moving and "a powerful, unforgettable, rhythmic experience". The weathers beautiful on the dancefloor!

MAT THE ALIEN

Let's clear something up. Technically Mat is not an alien. He was born near Manchester and moved to Canada in the mid 90's to follow his snowboarding addiction But that's where things get weird. On the flight over, the airplane was overtaken by what appeared to be a massive electrical storm over the Atlantic and was out of contact for thirty minutes and when it reappeared it was in essentially the same spot as before-." Alien contact? I don't know, have you ever heard Mat spin records? He had been dj'ing since 1998 and developed his style while working in his family's record store in Bury, England (opened by his dad at age 4, but it wasn't until after he arrived in Canada that his turntable abilities suddenly jumped to new heights. Heights later described by Knowledge Magazine as, "Awe inspiring. Some next level shit." "Who knows what happened on the plane?" he says. "I think If I can reproduce that alien sound , I should be able control minds and communicate through sound to people from all over the world." Mat has toured across the globe , pioneering 4-turntable club nights in Whistler and Vancouver, and with crates as deep as a black hole combined with mixing and scratching skills he is considered among the best by anyone who sees him , Mat was chosen to represent Canada and rock the party at Canada House during the 2006 Winter Olympics. He has produced many mix c.d.'s, released his debut self produced c.d. Downtime and been busy making music for T.V. show's and scratching on video games including N.B.A. street Homecourt for ea sports. Mix c.d. highlights are the 2002 C1RCA Presents Knowledge Magazine Mix CD, which showcased his ability to blend several styles of music seamlessly. Over 50,000 copies of the CD were distributed worldwide, to critical and popular acclaim. The follow up was C1RCA Presents C1pher 2004 which also featured DJ Dopey, the 2003 World DMC Champion and made big waves throughout the global d.j. community.Next up was a collaboration c.d. with u.k. beatboxer Killa Kela and next in line is a mix with the scribble jam 3 time champion Scratch Bastid. Mat has also changed the way people play records with "Mats Mats," slipmats for 45's allowing Dj's to scratch and cue 45 rpm records the same as they would a 12-inch, there is also Boca 45 (dynamo productions ) run of Matsmats At shows mats , pristine mixing of many genres and scratching techniques really does sound like it came from another world. Did Mat really get abducted by aliens that night,We'll never know but one thing is certain- Mat the Alien is capable of some out of this world shit and when Mat does find "that mind-control sound" the world will become a safer place.

Recently, they have been back in the studio with Afrika Bambaataa and King Kamonzi to record a smoking new single called "Radio Free DC." FK5's unique DJ style ranges from eclectic downbeat & hip hop, to upbeat funk and breaks. Their keen sense of party rocking has gained them countless fans around the globe. They have rocked dancefloors in Russia, Germany, Hungary, Holland, Switzerland, Australia, Thailand, and Canada to name a few. 2005 was a pinnacle year for the Fort Knox Five, having just been selected into the prestigious Urb Magazine Next 100, and featured on the Hotel Costes Sept Compilation, FK5 have also teamed up with the English Funkateers, Skeewiff, over at Jalapeno Records. Together they compiled a breakbeat funk compilation called, The Raid. It featured exclusive tracks and remixes by Skeewiff, the Fort Knox Five, and Kraak en Smaak. These tunes all come from the back catalogs of Fort Knox and Jalapeno. A major turning point in 2005 was when they were selected to be Gwen Stefani's tour and show dj on the Harajuku Lovers 2005 tour. Being a part of this, they had the opportunity to open sellout shows with Gwen Stefani, and the Black Eyed Peas. They were able to play massive arenas, such as the Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Gardens, and everywhere else in between. Next up for the Fort Knox Five was the release of the New Gold Standard Vol 1, which was the first CD release for Fort Knox. It is a compilation of songs coming from the vaults of Fort Knox. Solid 24K Gold! They released in 2007 a mix CD of their best remix work entitled "Fort Knox Reminted". FK5 worked closely with Krafty Kuts, Afrika Bambaataa, and Wicked Lester. Keep an eye out for their first full length album out Spring of 2008.

DJ Swamp

Swamp began mastering his DJ skills more than 15 years ago. In 1996, his rookie year, he took the title of USA DMC CHAMPION. Being true to his nature in an arena that was predominantly influenced by a very hip hop-esque culture, Swamp stepped up to the decks looking like some kind of junky punk. He was well received by the audience despite his counter-culture appearance because he exhibited skills that defied perception and already possessed a stage presence that many of his contemporaries still lacked. The finale came when he closed his set by freakin' Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' and then smashing his records.

Notorious for mischief, while he's on the turntables his shows are highly anticipated by those who know that they can expect to see something spectacular.

Although he's a hip-hop/d&b artist, his demeanor and appearance are closer to that of a metal head. He has been referred to as "the Sid Vicious of the DJ's", and has been known to have violent on-stage fits more characteristic of a rock star than of a hip-hop turntablist. While it's easy to compare him to rock/punk legends, in the world of DJ's he stands alone. Roguish behaviors such as: breaking his records then cutting himself with the fragmented remains; spitting fire; and performing cunnilingus on diamond-tipped phonograph needles really only provides the frame work to showcase what those that are in the 'know' recognize as extraordinary turntable skills. Breakbeats, scratching, juggling, and mutilating LPs and vinyl without losing the beat are all a part of a day at the 'office' for Swamp. Sometimes they end with a trip to the hospital: "I had to go to the hospital in Phoenix recently with second-degree burns," Swamp said from his publicist's office in New York. "I lit my hand on fire and then blew fire on it and basically became a blow torch. I don't use fire retardant or anything because this is low budget. Dude, I'm just a fire retard."

For four years DJ swamp toured as a member of beck's band. Immediately following his decision to depart from the band, swamp released his solo debut album, 'never is now' and toured to back the release. His decision to go out on his own gave him just the independence that he was looking for and opened up the avenue to self-expression that both he and the fans were seeking.

Contrary to how he flows when rhyming (eg. "How can I dis you, I've never even heard of you"-lyrics from 'Worship the Robot'), he expresses a certain sense of reverence when reflecting on the path he's traveled. When considering how he's managed to maintain critical mass his response is typically "I'm the luckiest person you'll ever meet. Something's always popping up. I'm just in the right place at the right time." Statements like that shouldn't suggest that he hasn't worked hard or employed incredible ingenuity to get where he is. He procured the spot with Beck by posing as a reporter to pass off his demo in person.

Swamp says that he draws off of his environment and a ten year affinity with a nameless muse for inspiration. He observes "what's going on" and converts his impressions into his art. His musical influences range from hip hop, to metal, punk, industrial and anything in between.

DJ Swamp has graced the pages of: Rolling Stone, Spin, Subculture, Raygun, Mean, DJ Times, Keyboard, Rap Sheet, Mixer, Rap Pages, The LA Times, and Urb.

Urb magazine says "Witnessing Swamp torture the 1200's is like watching a magic show."

ARTIST BIOS:

Bonobo (Ninja Tune)

It never fails to amaze me how swiftly a moment of fortune can so easily become a noose round the neck. Especially in the oh so fickle world of the music biz. In the case of Bonobo the moment, or perhaps the year, of fortune came when he released his debut album 'Animal Magic', at the precise time that 'chill' was the buzz word on everyone's lips. Never mind the fact that, even on the evidence of those first efforts, he was a truly gifted producer, you can't beat the power of the buzz. As is the way of these things, the buzz became the murmur, and soon became the background hum, as endless chillout comps, ads, and media campaigns swamped the shore of our consciousness.

A young Simon Green (for it is he who is the monkey king) refused to be dragged down by the lazy journalistic prose that labeled him 'chillout' and 'downtempo'. Far from it. He upped the stakes, and indeed, even stuck his neck out, moving from his original label Tru Thoughts to Ninja Tune, and set about taking things to the next level.

Cos it's all about the levels with Bonobo. Not in a techy, studio kinda way, but in the levels of involvement with his music. On the surface there are the organic, pastoral atmospheres, the catchy melodies, the elements that caught people from his first album. You can engage with a Bonobo tune in that way if you wish, and will be well rewarded for it. But it's the deeper, slightly hidden levels that you should investigate, for they bring the greatest prize. It's these elements that he explored on 'Dial M For Monkey', as a greater focus on live instruments, the intricacies of rhythm, the darker shades of the soul, and almost a sleight of hand, that meant that you could be in one mood one minute, and the next you would somewhere different.

'Dial M For Monkey' showed the set of brass balls that Bonobo (like his namesake) had, and these would be tested again as he set about building his live band. He duly found the right musicians, self financing rehearsals, and fine tuning a live show that brought out the elements of his music that had hitherto gone largely unnoticed, as the band swung and rocked their way through shows at Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Jazz Cafe, and internationally exotic settings from Italy to Russia.

He set about building his DJ style in the same way, refusing to conform to the preconceived ideas of a laid back style, and aiming headlong for the dancefloor, with a heavy mixture of hip hop, weighty jazz, broken beats, Latin, funk, and soul, with the occasional cheeky bit of psyche rock and drum and bass thrown in. Just to keep you on yer toes right? Now a DJ of international repute, Bonobo has played all over the world, including playing to huge audiences in the USA and Canada with Amon Tobin, a progress culminating in Ninja Tune asking him to put together a Solid Steel mix album. Bugger the lounge, lets dance.

Now, with the expectations duly dispatched with the good hiding they deserve, the field is wide open for Bonobo to push himself even further, and we await the next album, due late 2005 / early 2006, with our minds well and truly opened to the possibilities.

"Lots of live shit", says Bonobo."Strings, horns, drums and vocals. More energy and a bigger, heavier sound".

Come on then son.

Juno Award Nominated "Vocal Jazz Album of the Year" 2007 for Debut Album 'START TO MOVE'

Voted #3 Jazz Album of the Year 2006 on Gilles Peterson's Worldwide BBC Radio 1 London

Imagine a cold winter night in Toronto, walking past a small jazz club, when you catch through the folds of your scarf the warm deep grooves of a jazz trio playing to an intimate crowd. Welcome to the scene a fresh new sound from singer/songwriter Elizabeth Shepherd.

There are times when something new comes along at once familiar and yet completely original. The album 'Start to Move' from the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio is just that. But what's more she has added her own unique blend of jazz-funk, soul, blues, and samba to the fundamentals of Jazz – improvising a deep driving bass from Scott Kemp, the swinging beat of the drum from Colin Kingsmore, and Elizabeth's playful piano and captivating voice to tie it all together. Recorded over the winter of 2005/2006, you can feel yourself with them, locked away in a small studio, protected from the cold winter night, pushing through track after track for that deep warm sound.

Elizabeth strives to push the boundaries of what is considered conventional jazz to create a sound all her own. Raised by ministers of the Salvation Army, an early exposure to the sounds of the Army Band mixed with her love for house, disco, classical and hip hop, to lay the foundations of a soulful musician. Having trained extensively in conservatories from Alberta to France, and completing a degree in music from McGill University in Montreal, Elizabeth has emerged onto the Toronto jazz scene where she has already established herself as someone to be watched. Playing in some of Toronto's most popular spots, the Rex Hotel, the Montreal Bistro, Supermarket, and the Distillery District, and has grace the stages from around the world including London UK's Jazz Cafe twice within one year!. She has also appeared on numerous 'Live in Session' including Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show on BBC Radio 1 UK, and Matt Galloway's Here And Now show on CBC Radio One Toronto. As far as being a "jazz performer", Elizabeth does not count herself as one to be defined by a particular genre; her music comes straight from the soul, and is more than just what she does, but what she loves.

The album, 'Start to Move' is Elizabeth's debut with Do Right Music, a label which seeks out new talent playing music that is out of the ordinary, and marks the inaugural release of the "Do Jazz" series. Co-produced with Do Right's label boss John Kong, Elizabeth has put together a mix of original tracks and timeless classics. Her lyrics sing to us her struggle to find a place in a dynamic yet crowded jazz scene, as well as drawing on stories of love and life. From the jazz funk of 'Reversed' to the samba beats of 'Melon', the hip hop influenced 'George's Dilemma' and the swinging modal of 'Roots', the Elizabeth Shepherd Trio has given us music that seems effortless in its perfection, displaying her talents and the remarkable chemistry she shares with her band to never compromise her style for those seeking tradition.

"Proper vocal Jazz, a name to watch." Straight No Chaser, UK

"This is hard-bopping jazz that commands you to move." NOW Magazine

"Adding to the worldwide roster of new jazz artists who are bringing something fresh to an old blueprint" DJ Mag, UK

"A contemporary jazz artist who isn't afraid to do her thing." Montreal Mirror

"Refreshing in their lack of artifice....righteous grooves." Exclaim!

MEDICINEMAN (CIUT 89.5FM)

Following an extended teaching journey in Europe, Richard Martin aka medicineman staked his tent in the studio of CIUT radio in the heart of downtown Toronto. For the past 8 years, I've hosted NO MAN'S LAND and have earned a reputation among a loyal audience for unique, groove-driven explorations into the evolution of world music & global electronica

From Indo-Arabic dub to Afro-Latin funk, sets flow seamlessly from soothing ancient rhythms and textures through rippling primitive & progressive beats, always challenging cultural boundaries and musical traditions. This style of genre-bending mixology continues to win fans over the airwaves and on dancefloors. NO MAN'S LAND is considered by many to be the top world fusion radio show in Canada

Working closely with a number of clubs and promoters on local and international concerts & parties and through consistent work as an educator, radio producer and DJ, I strive to be instrumental in pushing the world music scene forward, and in exposing the international airwaves to the best emerging & established artists in the scene. That was a serious run-on sentence folks. Nevertheless, the recipe is to diligently seek out the finest independent grooves, hook into the leading music labels and spread a weekly healing dose to the masses. Music is indeed our medicine

Canadian-born multi-instrumentalist David Levy is the founder and leader of Out to Lunch. David is a graduate of New England Conservatory's contemporary improvisation program, and McGill University's jazz and classical performance program. David can be heard as a sideman on Verve Remixed 3 (Universal Records), as well as on the Junior Boys, So This Is Goodbye, and Last Exit (Domino Records). David plays bass clarinet, alto saxophone and bansuri flute; as well, he is heavily involved in electronic production.

Tenor and soprano saxophonist Petr Cancura was born in Jindrichuv Hradec, Czech Republic. Petr completed a masters degree at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Apart from his work with Out to Lunch, Petr plays along side The Mighty Popo, Holly Larocque Big Band, and People Music.

Josiah Woodson completed his masters degree in jazz performance in trumpet and flute at New England Conservatory under full scholarship. He works as a sideman touring throughout the United States with groups based in Boston, New York and Oakland. When not on the road, Josiah spends much of his time composing for both jazz ensemble and orchestra.

Eric Lane's prodigious talents have allowed him to carve out a niche for himself as one of the most interesting pianists and keyboard players on the east coast. Eric's ability to understand the nature of groove oriented music, combined with his depth as an interpreter of avant-garde has made him an extraordinarily well-rounded and compelling musician. Eric is currently finishing a jazz degree at the New England Conservatory.

Electric and Upright bassist Matt Wigton joined Out to Lunch in 2006 after it relocated from Boston to New York City. His ability to move effortlessly from funk grooves to walking jazz bass lines made him the perfect fit. Apart from Out to Lunch he is busy on the New York music scene playing in a variety of bands that include Lily Maase's: The Suite Unraveling, Zach Brock and the Coffee Achievers, and Elizabeth and the Catapult.

Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, drummer and sound designer Frederick Kennedy studied with Ed Soph at the University of North Texas and now makes his home in New York City. Recently, Fred has completed tours to Europe, California, and Ecuador. Fred has had the opportunity to perform with many notable artists, including David Krakauer, Sheryl Bailey, Tim Hagans, Ben Monder, Bobby Shew, Joe LoCascio, Lynn Seaton, Philip Glass, Iva Bitova, Trevor Dunn, Andrew D’Angelo, Chris Speed, Ralph Allessi, and Shane Endsley.

The Chameleon Project delivers sleek and progressive dance music, using all the tools at their disposal. Urgent and infectious beats meet deep pocket angular grooves. Surprising textures and cleaver arrangements unite in an atmosphere where anything can happen for the sake of the groove. This tightly knit trio pushes musical limits while remaining melodic. With backgrounds in improvisation, jazz, electronic music, dub, and funk they lay down dance music with a brain and improvisation with a purpose. Extracting the musical innovations from the masters of the past and the vanguards of today, the Chameleon Project distill their disparate influences, the likes of Roni Size, LTJ Bukem, Grant Green, Miles Davis, Chic, Funkadelic, The Grateful Dead, Little Feat, & King Tubby, into a cohesive sound that delivers exciting soundscapes and dangerous beats. This is a band that you have to experience live. No two shows are ever the same. Be prepared for anything, but count on moving your body while thoughtful melodies and pastoral textures entrance your mind.

Krafty Kuts Contagious Musiq / Against the Grain
[ www.kraftykuts.com ]

When you enter a DJ'ing competition, having never DJ'd before, and get to the finals, you know you must have chosen the right career path - Krafty Kuts was born. Having been responsible for the massively successful Finger Lickin' Funk EP, remixes of Flint and 2InDaBush as well as DJ'ing regularly under the Finger Lickin' banner, Martin Reeves aka Krafty Kuts is now firmly part of the Finger Lickin' family.

He was voted Best International DJ at the Australian Dance Music Awards and the Face of Breaks 2003 at the International Breakspoll Awards. These were the ultimate accolades for his efforts. However, this success didn't just happen overnight.

Krafty Kuts' first ventures on the wheels of steel occurred in the mid 80's when he was bitten by the hip-hop and Electro bug. It was during this period that he developed his cutting and scratching skills, which are now a trademark of his party rocking sets.

While Krafty Kuts was rocking down the house with his DJ skills, he was also busy working on his own music. In 1996 he was signed to FSUK, one of the Ministry of Sound's offshoot labels. 3 EP's were released to critical acclaim, along with 'Gimme the Funk'; a one-off release for Fatboy Slim's label Southern Fried that was hammered by every DJ worth their salt. The success of these releases led to Krafty Kuts becoming one of the most in demand remixers within the UK dance music scene. Today, the list of people Krafty Kuts has remixed reads like an A-List, including the likes of Jurassic 5, Utah Saints, Arthur Baker, Eric B & Rakim and the classic 'Humanoid' by Stakker Humanoid. His remixing talents were cemented at the 2003 International Breakspoll Awards, where he won Best Remix for Afrika Bambaataa's 'Funky Heroes'. As well as dishing out killer remixes, he's also managed to compile 'Slam The Breaks On' 1 & 2, both classic overviews of the breakbeat sound.

Whilst producing and remixing, Krafty Kuts has also managed to maintain his Djing commitments the world over, playing alongside such luminaries as Fatboy Slim, The Rolling Stones, The Prodigy, and Roni Size. Amazingly, Krafty still manages to hold down his residency club at Supercharged.

Krafty's seminal music has been used for a Coca-Cola advert, Playstation 2, and for Guy Ritchie's film 'Mean Machine'. In 2003, he, along with production partner A Skillz, released their album 'Tricka Technology' on Finger Lickin' Records to critical acclaim featuring hip hop legend Kurtis Blow as well as new talents Real Elements and ever reliable funky bass player Dr Luke.

Today, Krafty Kuts is still working harder than ever. At the 2004, 2005 and 2006 International Breakspoll Awards he took out the much coveted BEST DJ award, also winning best Breaks DJ at the recent M8 awards in Ibiza and has been booked solid ever since. Krafty has finished working on his debut solo album on Against the Grain featuring collaborations with Tim Deluxe, Ashley Slater, Be Spoke, Dynamite MC, Dr. Luke, A.Skillz and the Scratch Perverts, among others. In the words of Krafty himself, the album is going to be a monster!

The Jimmy Swift Band

They have performed 200 + shows a year for the past three years, selling out venues and packing dance floors across North America.

The JSB sound is so original that critics and fans have come up with a new genre to define it - Rocktronica. Coming out of Halifax, Nova Scotia, JSB consists of Craig Mercer on guitar, vocals, and effects,Aaron Collier on keyboards and effects, Mike MacDougall on bass, and Nick Wombolt on drums.

Each member brings their own strengths to a powerful sound which is greater than the sum of its parts. Their influences range from Daft Punk to Pink Floyd to Guns and Roses, and they meld aspects of these sounds together to create their original Rocktronica. JSB are currently touring in support of their third studio album, Weight Of The World.

Big League Chu

Colin Chu, better known as Big League Chu, is simply the leading DJ talent in Canada's breakbeat scene today. After nearly a decade of DJing, his name is synonymous with the funky, party-happy sound that?s become Chu's rallying call - and it's one that crowds answer faithfully. Passion for music and fun are what motivates Chu, who plays the piano, flute and guitar, and counts the Dave Matthews Band and Public Enemy as his biggest musical influences. It's this good-natured respect for good times and eclectic sounds that has garnered this humble DJ of Hong Kong and Singaporean descent to such a steady stream of press, from underground publications like Tribe and Klublife to mainstream outlets like the Toronto Star and Eye weekly. As Make It Funky's main resident, Colin dynamic sets and down to earth nature has made him Toronto's most sought after performer.

Robb G (Promo Records)

Behind the decks, Robb G's known for speedy, continuous mixing charged with a head-banging body thrash. Seeing him live, there is no questioning that this is a man who truly loves what he does. He landed his first residency at the young age of 15 and in the decade and a half since, his hard work ethic and electric performances have taken him to Europe, across the US and more than 30 Canadian cities.

He's had releases and remixes on Streetwise, Eastern Bloc, 2 Wars, Botchit as well as his own Promo Records imprint. Annie Nightengale played his track "Disaster", co-written with Paranoid Jack, so much on her acclaimed BBC Radio 1 show, that she invited the duo for a guest appearance. Robb G's upcoming single, titled "12 Inch Therapy", was declared "THE tune of Miami" by DJ Icey as it was played (sometimes twice) at every major event at this year's Winter Music Conference. When you add that Krafty Kuts is calling it "massive" and the Stanton Warriors are confessing to "busting it everywhere", it is a true hit in the making.

With his label poised to drop 12 stellar releases in 2007, the support of all his peers behind him and a passion for everything he takes on, Robb G is set for a stratospheric year.

He's been called "one of Canada's breakbeat pioneers" and is responsible for founding the country's first breaks label, Laidback Lab Records. Created in 1998, the imprint was an outlet for Robb to express his early exploits in music production as well as being home to the first releases of other soon to be stars such as Jelo. Robb's second release "Stick up kid" topped charts across the continent all the while gaining him the respect of his peers back home. The underground hit was the final icebreaker for him to penetrate the incredibly competitive Toronto DJ market. During the peak of Canada's rave scene in 1999, Robb was a resident for the now legendary Lifeforce productions. He was on the bill of every major event in southern Ontario, including Syrous's 6 year Anniversary with Daft Punk, Moonshine's over Canada Tour, Dose's "Throwdown" with the Freestyler's and Kickit's inaugural event with Adam Freeland & Q-bert.

Their highly sought-after production style has been called upon to remix incredible artists, including: the legendary Tito Puente, Louis Armstrong, Tower of Power, A Skillz and Krafty Kuts, Dynamo Productions, and Mo'Horizons to name a few. They have also been called upon by the godfather himself, Afrika Bambaataa, to produce four tracks on his recent album "Dark Matter" on Tommy Boy Records. Recently, they have been back in the studio with Afrika Bambaataa and King Kamonzi releasing a smoking new single called Radio Free DC.
FK5's unique DJ style ranges from eclectic downbeat & hip hop, to upbeat funk and breaks. Their keen sense of party rocking has gained them countless fans around the globe. They have rocked dancefloors in Russia, Germany, Greece, Spain, Hungary, Holland, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Canada to name a few. As well as mega clubs such as Fabric Live in London, Supercharged in Brighton, La Paloma in Barcelona, and many more....
In 2005 Fort Knox Five was honoured into the prestigious Urb Magazine Next 100, and featured on the Hotel Costes Sept Compilation, FK5 also teamed up with the English Funkateers, Skeewiff, over at Jalapeno Records. Together they compiled a breakbeat funk compilation called, The Raid. It features exclusive tracks and remixes by Skeewiff, the Fort Knox Five, and Kraak en Smaak. These tunes all come from the back catalogs of Fort Knox and Jalapeno.
A major turning point also in that year was when they were selected to be Gwen Stefanis tour and show DJ on the Harajuku Lovers 2005 tour. Being a part of this, they had the opportunity to open sellout shows with Gwen Stefani, and the Black Eyed Peas. They were able to play massive arenas, such as the Hollywood Bowl, Madison Square Gardens, and everywhere else in between.
Returning to Toronto almost a year after his legedary jam with God Made Me Funky in the summer of 2006, Fort Knox Five is also touring to support FORT KNOX REMINTED.

Reminted is the second CD release from Fort Knox Recordings, featuring a selection of Fort Knox Five's remixes, compiled & mixed in their signature, party-rocking DJ style.
Sid Barcelona, Jon Horvath, Rob Myers and Steve Raskin are the mastermind production team behind the Fort Knox Five. They have coined the term 'Reminted' to represent their unique remixing style. The Fort Knox Five are known for creating songs that go beyond the average remix by extensively incorporating their own live instrumentation and highly sought after production skills.
With this release, FK5 dig into their vast remix vault to select 12 tracks to create a continuously-mixed DJ set that takes you on a journey through some of their favorite performances. Celebrated masters Tito Puente and Joe Bataan, overlap vibes with current dancefloor artists A. Skillz & Krafty Kuts, Dynamo Productions, Skeewiff and Ursula 1000, to name a few. This collection puts you at the center of the floor at a raging Fort Knox Five party.

KING SUNSHINE HORN SECTION (Soul Motion Recordings)
Toronto's deep funk collective King Sunshine shared the stage with Fort Knox Five at an intense Make it Funky in 2005 and Make it Funky thought it would be fitting that King Sunshine's Horn section should come play live as Fort Knox Five's recent productions feature some great horns arrangements. In the spirit of Make Funky's penchant to offering once in a lifetime ~ off the chain musical collaborations ( Fort Knox Five and Killa Kella, Z-Trip and KC Roberts & The Raw Blue, DJ Serious & The Quartertones, CZECH vs CHU and more), King Sunshine's lead Brassman, Charlie Findlay will lead the horn assault with High Plains Drifter.

BIG LEAGUE CHU (Make it Funky)
As Make It Funky's main resident, Colin's dynamic sets and down to earth nature has made him one of Toronto's most sought after performers.

Zirca (Make it Funky, Mixed Bag)
Zirca has been spinning Drum & Bass since 2002. Although a fan of all genres of DnB, he prefers the smoother, funked out rollers and all that is liquid funk. He is a resident for Make It Funky and the founder of Mixed Bag: Downtempo & Breakbeat Sessions & the forthcoming liquid funk/reggae/dub monthly, SoulFULL. With two monthly's under his belt Zirca is one to watch.

Lady Linzee
Linzee (or Lady Linzee as we now know her) first became aware of her love for music back in the mid-nineties, in her soon to be hometown of Toronto, Canada. Always one of the first clubgoers on the dancefloor and one of the last one's to leave, she was inspired by some of the Detroit techno, house and trance greats such as Kenny Glasgow, Richie Hawtin, John Debo and DJ Dan. Today when Linzee is not on the dancefloor, she can be found bopping behind the decks of some of the smaller, more intimate parties around Toronto where she uses the music as a catalyst to create a funky explosion of energy.
She has built a name for herself spinning tunes on the chunky and funky edge of house music, gracing the decks in such clubs as the Ministry of Sound (London, UK), Heaven (London UK), Buzz (Washington, DC), Trade (Turnmills, London, UK), Faces (Ayia Napa, Cyprus), Volkesgarten (Vienna, Austria). Since her return to Toronto she held a monthly residency at Element Bar (Toronto, Canada), played to a crowd of thousands at the Docks for Reconnected in April 2005 opening up for the world renowned Crystal Method and held a year-long residency alongside a wide range of international superstars at Toronto's System Soundbar. Two years running she has funked up the stage at Toronto's Pride.
Seeing Linzee spin, you can't help but catch on to her infectious grooves as she bops along behind the decks. Her boundless enthusiasm, tremendous skill and overall presence behind the decks definitely makes her a DJ not to be missed.

Make it Funky is one of Toronto's largest Breaks & Live Funk Production Companies. A-SKILLZ

Adam 'A.Skillz' is one of Sussex's most talented beatmeisters. At just 23 years of age, Adam has been producing music and DJing for more than five years. Since starting out playing drums in the rock band Sabio, which for several years took him on regular tours across Europe, Adam has fast gained a reputation for himself as studio wizard, musical maestro and tantalizing turntablist.
His incredible deck talents involve fusing funk, hip-hop and breaks with his own style of highly innovative scratching and sampling, and have won him prime-time slots across the UK including FabricLive, Ministry of Sound, The Apollo, 93 Feet East and Chew The Fat in London; Supercharged, The Boutique, Catskills, Ocean Rooms and The Event in Brighton and Blowpop in Bristol, as well as gigs across the world playing at major events and music industry parties such as the Hit Factory Studio (New York) and Transmusicales Festival (France).
A.Skillz has also been a busy boy in the studio with his impeccable engineering talents being utilised by high profile labels such as Defunked, Arista, Curious Records and Planet Funk. He also co-produced the flip to the UK No.1 smash hit "Breathe" by Blu Cantrell with fellow producers Ed Funk & D Rok, as well as "Feel The Love" with Funk n' Flex. Adam has also mixed and engineered compilations for the UK's leading dance music magazine Mixmag, and has written and produced tracks for pop groups T-Girl and Tribe.
Over the past two years, Mr Skillz has been working in the studio with a certain other Brighton breakbeater and scratchmaster: Finger Lickin's very own Krafty Kuts, producing their highly acclaimed album "Tricka Technology".  With a nod towards De La Soul, Ugly Duckling, Gorillaz and Jurassic 5, it is true Finger Lickin' Funk, and the future certainly looks bright for these two! Enlisting the talents of some of the world's best hip-hop and funk artists including Kurtis Blow, Real Elements and Ashley "Freakpower" Slater, the duo have created an album that just oozes a summertime vibe full of hip-hop beats, party licks, deck tricks and spontaneous skits. He is currently working on his first solo artist album which will see him team up with DJ partner Krafty Kuts as well as other major names for some seriously hot collaborations! You read it hear first: you'll be seeing plenty more of the amazing Skillz in the future! wordPEOPLE [ www.myspace.com ]
Sometimes timing is everything. Driven by the common objective to assemble an all-live manifestation of a love for beats, rhymes and life, wordPEOPLE was formed in summer of 2003.The band's desire to record the material that had matured in front of live audiences materialized when 91.5fm The Beat hosted the "Rhythm of the Future Showcase" in Kitchener, Ontario. An outstanding performance of original music earned wordPEOPLE first prize in the group performance category and $18, 000 in studio time. The resulting recording, a five song EP entitled Vol. 1: PLAYONWORDS, musically and thematically fulfills the emcee's lyrical declaration; it is a mix of "the physical and digital, the sensible and whimsical". With current online distribution through Maple Music, wordPEOPLE is poised to continue the soul mission to make music that satisfies the mind and body.
wordPEOPLE's positive vibe and live instrumentation is at the heart of their ability to entertain audiences of all ages and musical interests. wordPEOPLE has garnered the attention of festival promoters, propelling the act into the public eye at such events as the Nike "Who Runs This Town?" rock festival in spring of 2005. In the same year wordPEOPLE was well received at the 2005 Oakville Jazz Festival, where festival-goers eagerly embraced the contemporary urban sounds alongside a line-up of traditional jazz ensembles. More recent dates have seen wordPEOPLE share the stage with God Made Me Funky, Mr. Something Something, Ike Turner, The Pocket Dwellers, K'naan, Sekoya and Nick Ali's GruvAsylum.

Currently recording their first full-length offering set for release in mid-March 2007, wordPEOPLE continues to perform for steadily increasing and receptive crowds, proudly delivering carefully crafted Canadian urban music.

THANK YOU!What an incredible two years for the fledging collective!  Make it Funky has raised the bar in Toronto by putting the party back in party.  The collective has focused on introducing new acts and old favorites to the Toronto scene and has developed a loyal following.  Some of the outstanding acts presented to date include: DJ Krafty Kuts (Brighton, UK), Afrika Bambaata (NYC), Malente (Hamburg, Germany) Freddy Fresh (Mineapolis), DJ Czech (Vancouver, BC), Mat The Alien (Whister, BC), Greg J (San Francisco, CA), Vinyl Ritchie (Victoria), Fort Knox Five (Washington, DC), Wax Romeo (Calgary, AB), Smalltown DJs (Calgary, AB), All Good Funk Alliance (Washington, DC), MC Killa Kella (London, UK),  The Jimmy Swift Band (Halifax, NS), God Made Me Funky (Toronto, ON), King Sunshine (Toronto, ON), High Plains Drifter (Toronto, ON), Chameleon Project (Toronto, ON), Moses Mayes (Winnepeg, MB), Kobayashi (Montreal, PQ)... and the list goes on!  And it all started by a group of fans who had the foresight and determination to bring the Canadian underground funk scene & burgeoning international mid-tempo break scenes together, re-definining dj & live events in Toronto.  We would like to take a moment to thank all our fans and supporters who have come out to make Make It Funky what it has become. We could not do it without your unwavering support.

FREDDY FRESH!
Freddy Fresh is among the most active and prolific American underground dance music artists, having released more than a hundred records on dozens of different labels worldwide . Born and bred in St. Paul Minnesota, Fresh's name is more often associated with the London UK scene, to which he relocated in the late '90s after having top 40 chart success with 2 of his songs. Fresh's first record label was formed in late 1992 and was called Analog Recordings. His label empire then grew to include a host of sublabels (Analog UK, Butterbeat, Electric Music Foundation and then Socket and Boriqua labels) In addition to a growing stateside audience, Fresh is also one of the few contemporary non-Detroit techno/electro musicians to have a strong European following, and his records for Experimental, Harthouse, and Martin "Biochip C" Damm's Anodyne label have strengthened his international presence. Although Freddy's release history has included tracks in just about every style from hip-hop and house to techno and trance, his roots and most consistently pursued affectation lay in electro and breaks; his records thrive on buzzing modular analog noises and resolutely dirty production techniques, resulting in a distinct, instantly recognizable brand of funky, minimal, somewhat experimental dance music.

Although Fresh grew up a gothic rock/new wave junkie, a trip to the "boogie down" Bronx in 1984 introduced him to the thriving N.Y.C. hip-hop scene. Instantly smitten, Fresh began collecting DJ tapes (Shep Pettibone, The Latin Rascals, Marley Marl, anything he could get his hands on) and, of course, records -- everything from Jonzun Crew and Newcleus to Liquid Liquid and Cerrone, Shannon and Cat Stevens -- and his collection has since grown to thousands of phonograph records(making his side gigs as a DJ a bit easier). Fresh's first work behind the boards came via Bronx legends Boogie Down Productions, with Fred remixing a track for a B-side release and from there, Freddy began piecing together a studio, collecting many of the ancient analog and modular synthesizers that give his records their distinct, almost studio-jam feel (he mixes all his tracks live and sequences with an MPC 2oooXL and an MPC 4000). In 1992, after releasing debut singles on Nu Groove and Silvo Tancredis' Experimental imprint, Fresh established his first label, Analog, to release his own tracks. The label and its offshoots have since attracted such weighty names as Thomas Heckman, Tim Taylor, Cari Lekebusch, DJ Slip, the Bassbin Twins, and Biochip C. In 1995, Fresh inked a contract with noted German techno label Harthouse, and his second full-length, Accidentally Classic, was released by the label's U.K. arm in late 1996, with a Harthouse U.S. reissue following close behind. His third album, The Last True Family Man, followed on Harthouse Eye Q and spawned 2 international chart hits along with a song featuring Fat Boy Slim. Several singles and a mix album followed until the release of his next full-length, Music for Swingers in 2001. Additionally, Fresh has released records through Wisconsin-based acid stronghold Drop Bass Network, Labworks, and noted German electro label Electrecord. Fresh also formed a collectors label specializing in 45 RPM singles called Howlin' Record in the year 2000 and has since released over 35 singles and 4 full length CD's on the Howlin' imprint with the following titles.. "Have Records Will Travel", "Outstanding In His Field", "Diggin' Up Ghosts" and "Surrounded By Funk", as well as Howlin’ Greatest Hits. Freddy has also revamped his Electric Music Foundation label for a CD only full length releases debuting with the album called "Textura" these recordings center around electronic synthesized music and electronica while the Howlin' releases are more funky breaks and party style hip hop tracks.
In the year 2004 Fresh released a reference book dealing with the history of the early independent old school rap scene that catalogues every conceivable rap label from 1979 to 1989, this book has been featured in The Source, Vibe, The New York Times, Village Voice and has gone on to win journalism awards in the United States and has been recognized as the only reference book on this subject. The book is called Freddy Fresh presents The Rap Records (Nerby Publishing LLC). Currently Fresh is working on a second book dealing with his experiences as an Electronic artist and his time spent with Sony music and his ups and downs in the electronic music industry.

In 2007 Fresh will be starting up a new label called Stark Raving Records which will feature conscientious hip hop by St. Paul rapper Conductor Crucified which will of course feature Fresh's trademarked beats and production styles.

Fresh's music has also enjoyed commercial success with releases featured in films like Austin Powers, Goldmember, Jackie Chan's Tuxedo and commercials by Adidas, Budweiser and Coors Lite etc.. Fresh also tours regularly and has DJ'd in over 34 countries and has performed for televised programs MTV Canada, Club TV, S2, House Viva TV, Club Spain etc.. and over 300 radio programs throughout the world including 2 sessions for the legendary late John Peel of famed Radio One BBC England.

More information on Freddy Fresh can be found in The Guiness Book of British Hit Singles (UK), The Rough Guide to Techno (Penguin Books UK), All Music Guide to Electronica (Backbeat Books USA), All Music Guide to Hip Hop (Backbeat Books USA) and Downloader’s Music Source Book 20,000 of the World’s Best Songs (Carlton Press)

KING SUNSHINE [ www.kingsunshine.com ]

King Sunshine illuminates disco roots and drop inflections of funk and dance rhythms, reinventing house music and driving the whole fusion over the red line. Imagine… nine musicians transformed into one “live” DJ. Comprised of keyboards/synths, heart pounding drums/percussion, deep bass, slick guitar, intense electronics, tight horns and soulful vocals.

King Sunshine illuminates disco roots and drop inflections of funk and dance rhythms, reinventing house music and driving the whole fusion over the red line.  Imagine… nine musicians transformed into one “live” DJ.  Comprised of keyboards/synths, heart pounding drums/percussion, deep bass, slick guitar, intense electronics, tight horns and soulful vocals.  King Sunshine has been lighting dance floors on fire since 1998 as a highly skilled and electric live act.  KS has redefined the concert going experience.

With the release of their second album “Second Movement” in fall ’06, King Sunshine is poised to branch out to new segments of music lovers worldwide.  Experiences at Canada’s largest music festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2005 and 2006, Ottawa Blues Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Toronto Harbourfront Festivals and Halifax’s Evolve Festival has brought KS nationwide recognition.  Years of sold out club shows and underground parties have led to shared stages with music's finest DJs, including DJ Sneak, Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, Ron Trent and Little Louis Vega.

King Sunshine’s raw explosive energy takes dance music off of vinyl and brings it to the live stage.  Emulating a DJ approach by building up their climaxes and breakdowns, and mixing their songs together into one continuous seamless set of music.  People have described their concerts as “deep and moving” and "a powerful, unforgettable, rhythmic experience".

“The weather’s beautiful on the dancefloor!”
