After a 10-game skid, winning sure feels good. Atlantas third error in the last two innings allowed Jackie Bradley Jr.Baseball season is just around the corner and [ TSN.ca ] has you covered for whos in, whos out and what to expect from all 30 teams. Check in every day this week for two new division previews, finishing up with Scott MacArthurs look at the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. Heres what to expect out of the American League Central in 2014. Chicago White Sox GM: Rick Hahn Manager: Robin Ventura 2013: 63-99, 5th in AL Central, Did not qualify for playoffs. That was Then: It was tough to finish below the Houston Astros in any statistical category in 2013, yet the Chicago White Sox managed to do exactly that in the runs scored category. Manager Robin Ventura was a finalist for Manager of the Year in 2012 but his 2013 team lost 22 more games and avoided the teams first 100-loss season since 1970 by just one game. Going a little deeper than saying everything went wrong for the White Sox, outside of Adam Dunn no one else on the team hit over 20 home runs. For his part, Dunn also whiffed 189 times, third-most in the American League. Chris Sale turned in a solid season from the mound posting an 11-14 record but a very respectable 3.07 ERA as well as 226 strikeouts to 46 walks. From there, the rest of the pitching staff took a sharp drop and one of the key members of the staff, Jake Peavy, was traded mid-season to the Boston Red Sox. When they were able to get the ball to closer Addison Reed he was pretty solid out of the back end of the bullpen converting 40 saves, but it wasnt enough to save a dismal season for the South Siders. Reed was rewarded for his standout play with a trip out of Chicago, direct to the Arizona Diamondbacks. This is Now: The White Sox have a few offensive pieces in their 2014 lineup that warrant some attention heading into the season. Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu who defected and signed a long term deal with the White Sox in the off-season should provide some pop in the middle of the lineup while Adam Eaton could be able to bring a spark to the White Sox attack. Even coming off as bad a run producing season as the White Sox just had, their real problem is going to be starting depth. Outside of Chris Sale, who has proven himself to be a staff ace, they are going to struggle to put together a top of the line starting staff. Which in turn is going to tax their bullpen causing it to struggle. Variations on a theme for the 2014 Chicago White Sox. Whos In?: 1B Jose Abreu, RP Jairo Asencio, RP Ronald Belisario, RP Mitchell Boggs, 3B Matt Davidson, RP Scott Downs, OF Adam Eaton. Whos Out?: C Bryan Anderson, SP Gavin Floyd, 1B Travis Ishikawa, RP Addison Reed, IF Angel Sanchez, SP Hector Santiago, RP Ramon Troncoso, OF Dewayne Wise. Cleveland Indians GM: Chris Antonetti Manager: Terry Francona 2013: 92-70, 2nd in AL Central. Lost Wild Card Game to Tampa Bay. That was Then: To say things were different for the Cleveland Indians under Manager of the Year Terry Francona would be the biggest understatement made in these or any other previews. Francona, owner of two World Series rings from his time with the Boston Red Sox, instilled a winning philosophy in his team and they rode that wave right into the American League Wild Card Game, marking the Tribes first playoff berth since 2002. Jason Giambi, Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn all arrived to add a veteran presence while Carlos Santana took a reduced role behind the plate in order to get his bat into the lineup more often. Justin Masterson had a breakout season which included beating R.A. Dickey and David Price, the two reigning Cy Young Award winners. This is Now: Canadian John Axford has replaced the sometimes-erratic Chris Perez as the teams closer and though he had a rough time during the 2013 season, split between the Milwaukee Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals, he will be looking to get things right in Cleveland for 2014. Santana is trying his hand at third base in an effort not to become a fulltime DH and could add to the roster flexibility the Indians already enjoy with many players that can move to multiple positions. In the end the Indians will go as far as their rotation can take them and there are questions about what they can get from not only Masterson but Corey Kluber and Zach McAllister at the top of the rotation. If the arms falter, the Indians will take a huge step back, right out of the playoff picture. Whos In?: IF David Adams, RP Scott Atchison, RP John Axford, RP Colt Hynes, 2B Elliot Johnson, SP Shaun Marcum, RF David Murphy, RP Josh Outman, J.C. Ramirez. Whos Out?: RP Matt Albers, OF Ezequiel Carrera, RP Rich Hill, SP Ubaldo Jimenez, SP Scott Kazmir, OF Jason Kubel, C Lou Marson, SP Brett Myers, RP Chris Perez, RP Clay Rapada, C Omir Santos, RP Joe Smith, OF Drew Stubbs. Detroit Tigers GM: Dave Dombrowski Manager: Brad Ausmus 2013: 93-69, 1st in AL Central. Lost American League Championship Series to Boston. That was Then: The Detroit Tigers have been the class of the Central Division and the 2013 season did nothing to change that as they won 93 games on their way to a third consecutive title. Their season eventually came to an end at the hands of the Boston Red Sox in the American League Championship Series as they fell in six games. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera picked up his second straight MVP award after posting another incredible season of 44 home runs and 137 RBIs. He battled injuries towards the end of the caampaign and had trouble finding his form in the playoffs. [ www.germanyfcsoccershop.com ] Bellarabi Jersey. . Max Scherzer turned in a 21-3 season and a 2.90 ERA on his way to earning the CY Young Award. This is Now: An entire season review of the Detroit Tigers and not one mention of Justin Verlander one of the top pitching talents in all of baseball. He had a down year in 2013 finishing with a 13-12 season and 3.46 ERA. It would not be a surprise to see him return to the elite level he has produced since the 2009 season. That means with all of the weapons currently in new manager Brad Ausmus arsenal, the best one might be a bouncing back, motivated Justin Verlander. Veteran manager Jim Leyland who led the team to four playoff appearances, all division titles, as well as two World Series (where they were twice beaten) has called it a career after eight seasons with the team. One weapon Ausmus wont have is slugger Prince Fielder who had become a fixture in a Tigers uniform but was dealt in the off-season to the Texas Rangers for Ian Kinsler. That deal was a move that will cost the team some offence but pay back both in defensive improvement as well as health as it will allow Cabrera to move back to the less taxing first base position. That equals trouble for the rest of the American League. Whos In?: RP Duane Below, OF Ezequiel Carrera, RP Joba Chamberlain, OF Trevor Crowe, OF Rajai Davis, 2B Ian Kinsler, RP Ian Krol, RP Joe Nathan. Whos out?: RP Joaquin Benoit, 1B Prince Fielder, SP Doug Fister, 2B Omar Infante, C Brayan Pena, SS Jhonny Peralta, RP Jose Valverde, RP Jose Veras. Kansas City Royals GM: Dayton Moore Manager: Ned Yost 2013: 86-76, 3rd in AL Central. Did not qualify for playoffs. That was Then: For the first time since 2003, the Kansas City Royals turned in a winning season, finishing with an 86-76 record. The team has shown tremendous growth under manager Ned Yost but last year was the first time they looked as though they took a legitimate step forward. Alex Gordon had a strong offensive season but leading the team with 20 home runs means your team did not hit for power at all. Still there were signs of life from players like Eric Hosmer who swatted 17 homers and drove in 79 runs as well as catcher Salvador Perez who also cashed in 79 runs. James Shields was strong at the top of the pitching rotation finishing with a 13-9 record and a 3.15 ERA and Greg Holland was more than reliable as the teams closer. It was a solid but not spectacular season for the Royals, a team that has lots of room left to grow. This is Now: The addition of Nori Aoki is going to help properly re-order the Royals lineup. He will now hit at the top, allowing Alex Gordon to slide into the five-hole where he can try to boost his power numbers. Omar Infante will also help at the top of the order to set the table for Hosmer and Billy Butler another legit power threat that didnt post big numbers but has the ability to provide pop. They will have to find a way to replace Ervin Santana who signed with the Atlanta Braves during the off-season and was a key member of their starting rotation. Every year is supposed to be the year the Royals finally put it together but 2014 just might be that year after they made great veteran acquisitions to go with strong young talent. Whos In?: OF Nori Aoki, C Ramon Hernandez, 2B Omar Infante, IF Brandon Laird, OF Melky Mesa, OF Carlos Peguero, RP Jon Rauch, RP Ramon Troncoso, SP Jason Vargas. Whos Out?: 2B Emilio Bonifacio, IF Jamey Carroll, 2B Chris Getz, C George Kottaras, 1B Carlos Pena, SP Ervin Santana, RP Will Smith. Minnesota Twins GM: Terry Ryan Manager: Ron Gardenhire 2013: 66-96, 4th in AL Central. Did not qualify for playoffs That was Then: Sour times for the 2013 Minnesota Twins included a 66-96 record, their third consecutive sub-70 win campaign, as well as saying goodbye to long-time franchise cornerstone Justin Morneau who was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates just prior to the trade deadline. Joe Mauer once again carried the load behind the plate and saw his offensive numbers dip as he only drove in 47 runs to go along with his 11 home runs. The Twins were not great at the dish in 2013 but compared to their starting staff they were red hot all season. Kevin Correia was the best of a struggling bunch of starters as he finished with a 9-13 record and a 4.18 ERA. Truthfully, the Twins struggled across the board most notably in their 8-20 September finish that translates to a .286 winning percentage. This is Now: The Twins have a few blue chip prospects in their system but those players are a few years away from making it to the Major Leagues. For now they were left with a roster made up of Joe Mauer and spare parts that have been cobbled together from the free-agent pool or left over from the last time the team contended. The biggest off-season move was picking up Kurt Suzuki which will allow Joe Mauer to become the fulltime first baseman and allow him to finally play a relatively full schedule without putting catcher stress on his body. The Twins are a bad team and they havent done much to make anyone think they are going to be much better in 2014. Whos In?: RP Matt Guerrier, SP Phil Hughes, RP Kris Johnson, OF Jason Kubel, SP Ricky Nolasco, C Kurt Suzuki. Madrid, which only needed a draw at home to Galatasaray to clinch top spot in Group B, won 4-1 with goals from Gareth Bale, Alvaro Arbeloa, Angel Di Maria and Isco. Juventus claimed its first win of the campaign and moved into second place in the same group with a 3-1 victory over Copenhagen as Arturo Vidal scored a hat-trick. The Bianconeri kept their destiny in their own hands and a draw away to Galatasaray on the final matchday will be enough for the Italian champions to advance. United qualified from Group A with an emphatic 5-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen and PSG secured top spot in Group C with a 2-1 win against Olympiakos. "To come to Germany and get a such a good result -- Leverkusen are second in the Bundesliga behind Bayern Munich -- it gives an idea of where our performance and result stood," United coach David Moyes said. On a night when all the big clubs won, defending champion Bayern Munich set a new Champions League record by winning its 10th successive game in the competition with a 3-1 win at CSKA Moscow. It equaled Barcelonas 2002-03 record with nine in a row three weeks ago. Bayern, the only team left in the tournament with a 100 per cent record, overcame freezing temperatures to come out on top of an entertaining match. Bayern leads Group D with 15 points, three more than Manchester City after the Blues won 4-2 against last-place Viktoria Plzen. Bayern and City, who had already qualified, will be vying for the group supremacy in two weeks in Germany. Despite Cristiano Ronaldos absence and Sergio Ramoss sending off after just 26 minutes, Madrid played superbly in the second half, scoring three goals to add to Bales opener. Ramos was sent off for a foul on Umut Bulut, but Madrid looked unfazed as Bale opened the scoring with an exquisite free kick from 30 metres in the 37th minute. Bulut equalized right away but the Turkish club wilted in the second half at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium as Madrid joined fellow Spanish teams Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the round of 16. Chelsea also advanced on Tuesday night despite losing 1-0 against Basel. "The second half was very good. The coach made all the right changes. Many people say that we depend on players like Xabi Alonso or Cristiano Ronaldo but we showed we can win because of the way others play," said Arbeloa. United played its most accomplished match of the season against a poor Leverkusen team to claim its biggest away success since the Champions League foormat was introduced in 1992-93. [ www.shoptheofficialpackers.com ] Murphy Jersey. Playing without star striker Robin Van Persie and defender Nemanja Vidic, United had been expected to struggle against the German team. Instead, they cruised. "That was a really tough evening for us," Leverkusen midfielder Simon Rolfes said. "The second goal broke down our morale a bit although we actually had a decent start to the game. After the third goal, the game was over." Antonio Valencia put United ahead in the 22nd minute, Emir Spahics own goal in the 30th doubled Uniteds lead and Jonny Evans got the third in the 65th. Chris Smalling steered home the fourth in the 77th and Nani completed the rout in the 88th. United has 11 points before its final match against second-place Shakhtar Donetsk, which beat Real Sociedad 4-0 to move onto eight points. Leverkusen has seven points while Real Sociedad has one point and is eliminated. It was a good evening for the Manchester clubs as Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko scored in the final 12 minutes to earn City a 4-2 victory over Plzen, keeping alive the English teams slim hopes of finishing top of Group D. In Moscow, Arjen Roben fired Bayern in front midway through the first-half before Mario Gotze made it 2-0 with a solo effort early in the second half. Keisuke Honda was a constant threat after the interval and converted a penalty in the 61st minute as CSKA pulled one back. But Thomas Muller also scored from the spot to restore a two-goal lead for Bayern four minutes later. Vidal broke the deadlock for Juventus in the 28th minute from the penalty spot after Lars Jacobsen had handled in the area. Former Juventus defender Olof Mellberg swiftly went from hero to villain for Copenhagen when he equalized in the 56th before giving away a penalty four minutes later by bringing down Fernando Llorente. Vidal again converted and headed home two minutes later to complete his hat trick. At the Parc des Princes, Edinson Cavani scored in the final minute as 10-man PSG beat Olympiakos 2-1 to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League as group winners. With PSG a man down for most of the second half after midfielder Marco Verrattis sending off, Olympiakos looked to have done enough to seal a valuable draw when centre half Kostas Manolas equalized from close range in the 80th minute following a corner. But Cavani ran onto substitute Adrien Rabiots pass and finished with a powerful shot that gave goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez no chance. Verrattis sending off in the 46th handed the visitors a way back into a contest that looked easily within PSGs reach when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in the seventh minute on his 100th appearance in the competition. Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork. .com ] - Boise State once again had a party in the Fiesta Bowl, even if it couldnt start celebrating until the very end. Jay Ajayi rushed for three first-half touchdowns, Thomas Sperbeck amassed a career-high 199 yards on 12 catches and the 21st-ranked Broncos stopped Arizona near the goal line on the final play to hold on for a thrilling 38-30 victory over the No. 12 Wildcats. Boise State built a 21-0 first-quarter lead and stayed in front the rest of the way, though Arizona got within eight yards of a potential game-tying touchdown before Anu Solomon was sacked by Kamalei Correa as time ran out. Ajayi finished with 134 yards on 22 carries in the Mountain West champion Broncos ninth straight win and third in the past nine Fiesta Bowls. Grant Hedrick threw for 309 yards with a touchdown and an interception while completing 24-of-34 passes for Boise State (12-2). Solomon had both a rushing and passing touchdown and put up 335 yards on a 28- of-49 completion rate, but the freshman also had a few rookie mistakes that hurt Arizona (10-4) in its first major bowl appearance since the 1994 Fiesta. He was intercepted twice, one of which was returned 16 yards for a critical touchdown by Donte Deayon late in the third quarter, and couldnt throw the ball away on Correas game-ending tackle on third down with the Wildcats out of time outs. Cayleb Jones had eight catches totaling 117 yards for Arizona. Nick Wilson rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts in the loss, but sat out the entire second half with a head injury. [ www.cheapcardinalsjerseyselite.com ] .Y. -- Scott Chandler is returning to Buffalo, where he spent the past three seasons establishing himself as the Bills top pass-catching tight end. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Carson Palmer completed six passes to six receivers on the Arizona Cardinals opening drive that led to a touchdown. Three straight completions went for at least 20 yards on another drive. A simple slant turned into a 91-yard, catch-and-run touchdown. It was like that all game. Best of all, the nine players who caught Palmers passes Sunday all played for his team. For a team plagued by turnovers this year, including 15 interceptions, Palmer delivered a beauty Sunday in a 27-14 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was 30 of 42 for 419 yards and two touchdowns, and he did not throw an interception for the first time this year. "Carson played by far his best game," Arizona coach Bruce Arians said. His one big mistake? Throwing a ball up for grabs late in the third quarter that linebacker Russell Allen easily grabbed for an interception. Just his luck, Arians had called a timeout and no one saw the official running from the sideline to stop the play. The Cardinals (6-4) couldnt afford to lose this game as they try to stay in the playoff mix. Palmers flawless play, and a defence that stiffened after surrendering two quick touchdowns, made sure they didnt. "We have talked about how the playoffs have already started. You lose, youre out," Arians said. "Were a game behind teams, so we have to keep winning. We have to take a playoff attitude every week, that this game is a playoff game and we have to win to catch up. The guys have done it." Arizona won its third straight, and it won twice in Florida in the same season for the first time in franchise history. The Cardinals had a 13-10 win over Tampa Bay in late September. This one was easier, thanks to the strong play of Palmer, a career game for Michael Floyd and a defence that allowed only 57 yards in the second half. Floyd, listed as questionable because of a shoulder injury, had six catches for a career-best 193 yards, including a 91-yard score that made the Jaguars secondary look silly. On third-and-10 from the 9, Floyd beat Will Blackmon on a slant. He shook off tackles by Allen and safety Winston Guy. When Blackmon caught up to him, the cornerbacks hands slid off his shoulder pads, he rolled into cornerback Alan Ball, and Floyd was on his way. "The safety bit down on the play-action and Carson made a heck of a throw," Floyd said. "I made a couple of guys miss and we scored a touchdown. You give me a little bit of a space and I just try to break tackles. With my big frame, I should be able to make catches that not all guys can." The Jaguars (1-9) at least scored a touchdown at home for the first time this year. On fourth-and-2 from the 38 on their opening drive, Chad Henne found tight end Danny Noble all alone behind the defence for an easy catch, and he rumbled 50 yards to the end zone with his first NFL reception. [ www.cheapcardinalsjerseyselite.com ] Larry Fitzgerald Jersey. "There were many situations where I felt like we were bold, and I told our team that we need to take that personality on," Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said. Jacksonville scored another touchdown after a 59-yard kickoff return by Jordan Todman and a pair of Arizona mistakes -- none bigger than Yeremiah Bell getting called for unsportsmanlike conduct after Hennes pass on third-and-goal from the 3 was incomplete. Maurice Jones-Drew scored from the 1 for a 14-7 lead. But that was it for the Jaguars, who returned to their inept ways one week after getting their first win at Tennessee. Palmer was rarely under pressure and moved the ball at will, with six passes that went for at least 20 yards. His other TD was a 14-yard strike to Larry Fitzgerald that tied the game at 7 in the first quarter. "I had a really nice time in the pocket. I had a clean pocket for the most part and was able to step into a lot of throws," Palmer said. "Guys did a nice job of finding the voids in their zone. I thought guys came with the right attitude. It wasnt a letdown game for us. It was a must-win, and we did what it took." Rashard Mendenhall scored on a 5-yard run late in the second quarter to tie the game at 14. Otherwise, the running game didnt exist for either team. The Cardinals came into the game with the third-ranked run defence. It held the Jaguars to 32 yards. The Cardinals had 416 yards, only 14 on the ground. Jones-Drew finished with 23 yards on 14 carries. "Theyre a great defence. We knew that going in," Jones-Drew said. "They load the box and wanted to make sure that we couldnt run the ball." Henne rarely threw downfield, settling for bubble screens that didnt get the Jaguars very far. When he finally went vertical, he threw a pair of interceptions late in the game that sealed it for Arizona. Henne was 27 of 42 for 255 yards. Palmer was sacked three times, but for the most part, he had ample time to show. The Jaguars best player was punter Bryan Anger, who constantly pinned the Cardinals deep in a spot they couldnt afford any mistakes. They didnt make any. After spotting Jacksonville two scores, the defence took it from there. The Jaguars only once got beyond the Cardinals 40-yard line the rest of the way, and that was late in the game when it was too late. "Defensively, we came out in the second half like we have all year and shut them down," Arians said. Got to go there and steal one.The Cardinals did not work out after taking an overnight flight that touched down in St. Louis about 6 a.m. A tarpaulin covered the infield later Sunday when about a dozen Dodgers players, including Clayton Kershaw, played catch and ran sprints in left field under the lights.Shelby Miller (10-9) makes his first career post-season startt in Game 4 on Tuesday. [ www.nfltitansfansstore.com ] Smith Womens Jersey. Dan Haren (13-11) is the probable for the Dodgers, but Haren will also prepare as if hes starting Game 3 in case hes needed in long relief.Yeah, we have flexibility, Mattingly said. We dont know whats going to happen tomorrow for us. Anything could happen with Hyun-Jin.The Dodgers could turn to Kershaw on short rest in Game 4 if they are facing elimination. Kershaw is favoured to win his third Cy Young Award in four years after going 21-3 with a 1.77 ERA, but he has a 1-4 record and a 5.20 ERA in the post-season and twice straight has been pummeled by the Cardinals.Ryu threw 43 pitches in a three-inning simulated game on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. He lasted just one inning in his last start of the season, but Mattingly pointed out hes also thrown two bullpen sessions. Its not like were just throwing him out there, the manager said.Still, stamina could be a factor, and the Dodgers have had middle-relief issues. Rookie Pedro Baez allowed Matt Hollidays three-run homer that put the Cardinals ahead 10-6 in the opener, and J.P. Howell gave up Matt Carpenters tying two-run homer in the seventh inning in Game 2.Unlike the Cardinals, who have All-Star setup man Pat Neshek ahead of Trevor Rosenthal, the Dodgers have had to mix and match. You just cant worry about that, Jansen said. What happened yesterday happened. That doesnt happen very often. After a mid-September break to recharge from a dead arm, Lackey allowed three earned runs in 14 1-3 innings his last two outings. Hell be making his first appearance since Sept. [ 24.Ca ] manager Mike Matheny wasnt surprised Lackey didnt take it well when he got skipped in September.Yeah, Ive had some interesting looks and conversations, Matheny said. Yeah, every time I go to take him out, I know its going to be something. Hes done a nice job of walking that fine line of making it known hed like to stay in the game, but also not crossing that line.Lackey needs 3 2-3 innings to overtake CC Sabathia (107 2-3) as the active leader in post-season innings.Im going to cut it loose. Whatever is in there is going to be in there, Lackey said. Yeah, this isnt the regular season. Were not saving anything.
