REMIX 2005

Remix is a simple and direct concept. Television is taken from the rich airways and put into the hands of artists to be remixed and redistributed to the people. Having tackled icons of sports, music and information television, we now turn our gaze towards the dramatic form. But where exactly do we look on the sparse landscape of English Canada’s dramatic history?

North of 60 was an obvious choice.

One of Canada’s most popular English-language dramas ever to air, North of 60 was a welcome departure from the formulaic variations on the cops and robbers theme. Like other Canadian shows, such as The Beachcombers, Rainbow Country and Danger Bay, it also positioned itself in relation to an important psychological space in the Canadian imagination - the wilderness. More than this, North of 60 is one of the few efforts that popular culture producers have ever made to represent contemporary Aboriginal life. However, despite the fact that the show is undoubtedly a remarkable shift from the average television soap opera, it is still a product of the wonderful world of the CBC and the television industry at large. Most of what this industry produces, as we all know, is far from perfect.

Every year, a new group of Remix artists piece together a program that examines all the irony, tragedy, humour and shock that an hour of television can offer. They break it down, dissect it and recreate it all from a new perspective, one that delights in its piracy, or should we say liberation, from the airwaves as it is released back to the audience. This year is no exception. Our more focused group of artists will handle the responsibility of making over another cultural icon, as we deliver a broader range of perspectives than you could ever experience on your television dial.

Come join us for the most popular and irreverent media art program in the region as we celebrate the world premiere of three new works from some of the best artists working in Ottawa and Montréal.
