Search engine submission is a bitch. You generally suggest sites into appropriate categories on search engines.

[ docs.yahoo.com ]
[ dmoz.org ]
[ addurl.altavista.com ]
[ insite.lycos.com ]

There are a few sites out of literally hundreds. Do not use automatic submission tools as they will most likely put your site into the wrong categories. Its a very time consuming process which is why there are companies whose specific function is search engine submission.

also, major search engines like yahoo and google have bots that run around the internet fetching the content and meta information from websites and storing it into massive directories, so you have to make sure your content and HTML are well structured and that your META tags contain good information.

When it comes to meta information, there are nine meta tags you should have in your .

That makes sure the bot knows 100% how to read your site since the bot is multilingual.

Some engines will display a copyright notice in their listing and its just more information to feed to the bot.

This will put the site everywhere as it is approriate for everyone. The reason why you do this is for people who might have a safesearch feature enabled (like in libraries or other public access computers).

Says the document is dynamic.

some bots will take this as a request to come back every 5 days.

The two famous ones. You should not repeat keywords, and the list should be kept small. Your description should not be very long either.

---

In terms of content, the less HTML, the better. Bots have a tendancy to have a set limit of data they read. This is why CSS is important. Bots can not read the content of flash files.

Some bots will even prioritize content (like Google's bot) based on the tags they are in. Some bots will attempt to distinguish content from titles by comparing tags. If everything is in tables or divs, it'll give the bot trouble on figuring out what information is best to fetch.

Google also works on the number of links to your page and from where. If a million people link to your site with a common word of "shitty", then your site will rank high for that word.

good luck
