It comfort me to hear about vicious crimes happening in US as I know they will most likely be tried as adults, not like this wimpy place (Quebec). When someone does that kind of shit fuck their childhood and fuck their rehabilitation, they need to do a lot of hard time.

Video shows white teens driving over, killing black man, says DA

Jackson, Mississippi (CNN) -- On a recent Sunday morning just before dawn, two carloads of white teenagers drove to Jackson, Mississippi, on what the county district attorney says was a mission of hate: to find and hurt a black person.

In a parking lot on the western side of town they found their victim.

James Craig Anderson, a 49-year-old auto plant worker, was standing in a parking lot, near his car. The teens allegedly beat Anderson repeatedly, yelled racial epithets, including "White Power!" according to witnesses.

Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith says a group of the teens then climbed into their large Ford F250 green pickup truck, floored the gas, and drove the truck right over Anderson, killing him instantly.

Mississippi officials say it was a racially motivated murder. What the gang of teens did not know was that a surveillance camera was focused on the parking lot that night, and many of the events, including the actual murder of Anderson, were captured live on videotape.

CNN has exclusively obtained that surveillance tape. The group of teens that night was led by 18-year-old Deryl Dedmon, Jr., of Brandon, Mississippi, according to police and officials.

"This was a crime of hate. Dedmon murdered this man because he was black," said Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith. "The evidence will show that."

Asked if there could be any doubt whether the intent was to actually hurt and kill a black person, Smith responded: "No doubt about it. They were going out to look for a black victim to assault, and in this case, even kill."

Dedmon led and instigated the attack from early in the evening, he took part in the beating of Anderson, and Dedmon was also the actual driver of the Ford 250 truck that would serve as the murder weapon, according to officials.

As the teens were partying and drinking miles away from Jackson that night, in largely white Rankin County, Dedmon told friends they should leave, saying "let's go fuck with some niggers," according to law enforcement officials.

Then, the gang of teens climbed into Dedmon's green truck and a white SUV Cherokee, and drove 16 miles down Interstate 20, to the western edge of Jackson, a predominantly black area.

The teens would have seen Anderson immediately as they exited the highway, as the parking lot where he was standing is just beside the exit ramp.

"This is the first business that you get to coming off the highway and so that was the first person that was out here and vulnerable," said district attorney Smith.

On the videotape, obtained and reviewed by CNN, the group of teens is seen pulling into the parking lot, and stopping where Anderson is standing, though he is just off camera and not visible.

The teens can then be seen going back and forth between their cars and Anderson. Witnesses told law enforcement officials this is when the repeated beatings of Anderson took place.

Dedmon pummeled Anderson repeatedly as he crumpled to the street, according to officials, though this is not visible in the videotape. Finally, after the beating some of the teens left and some got into the green truck.

At this moment on the video, Anderson becomes visible, as he staggered into view and walked towards the headlights of the truck. The truck suddenly surges ahead, running over Anderson, then continuing at high speed away from the scene.

Shortly after he allegedly drove the truck over Anderson, Dedmon allegedly boasted and laughed about the killing, according to testimony given by some of the teens to detectives.

"I ran that nigger over," Dedmon allegedly said in a phone conversation to the teens in the other car.

He repeated the racial language in subsequent conversations, according to the law enforcement officials.

"He was not remorseful he was laughing, laughing about the killing," said district attorney Smith.

Later that morning, James Craig Anderson's family learned their 49-year-old brother and son died in a hit and run. Only later, when witness statements were taken did they learn the real horror.

"It appears there is no doubt that this was a racially motivated killing," said Winston Thompson, the attorney representing Anderson's family. "The family is still in shock still in disbelief."

Smith and officials in the Hinds County District Attorney's office say they plan to indict Dedmon for murder and a hate crime.

Deryl Dedmon is thin, weighing a mere 130 pounds, and short -- at 5 feet; he has straggly blond hair and piercing blue eyes.

The teen, just 18 years old, has been charged with murder and now faces a possible double life sentence. Calls to Deryl Dedmon's attorney have gone unanswered.

During a bond hearing his attorney told the court he saw nothing to back up the "racial allegations."

At Dedmon's home, a girl who answered the door pretended not to know him though the pick-up truck he allegedly used as a murder weapon sticks out of the family's garage.

Police say they returned it after the vehicle was processed. A second teen, 18-year-old John Aaron Rice, has been charged with simple assault, for his part in the beating his attorney also did not return calls.

Neither teen has entered a plea.

The other teens in the group have not been charged.

And James Craig Anderson's family has decided to remain silent for now, trying to come to grips with a crime they thought was in Mississippi's past: the murder of a man just because he was black.

If im not mistaken, if you are 18 you are considered an adult if you commit a violent crime in quebec. In fact these assholes are only considered "teens" in the u.s. And theres no way to know if they will be charged as adults or not the united states has young offender programs same as here.

N’importe-quoi, vraiment.

If the perpatrators had been black and the victim white, they would probably all be on death row by now.

I doubt it would change anything have he been 17. We'll just see about your supposition, I lean toward charged as adult for the guy that "ran that nigger over".

I think the point is: we might be happy to note that some assholes are assholes in places where the consequences are far more severe than here.

Is that a problem?

In fact in England just day before yesterday a mob of black youth serverly beat up a 70 year old white man, he died this morning :(

Even more disturbing Flash Mobs, in these incidents, groups of black teenagers go out and randomly beat up white people, happening all over the US. People have been severely injured in these attacks

ya laws in Canada are way too soft. In 2007, an old friend of mine lost her nephew here in Hamilton. he got into an altercation with some rudeboys at a club. So they followed him outside and he was shot dead in front of a crowd of people. It was basically an execution. and then as he lay there on the ground, one of them threw a beer bottle at his body and they just walked away. No witnesses would tell the cops anything. Finally my friend appealed to the public to break this code of silence and give an anonymous tip. So thankfully someone did, and they arrested the scumbags.

but it turned out.. one of the guys who did it had already been involved in another notorious murder in Toronto in 1996. A 16 year old girl was home-invaded and shot dead with a shotgun. So even though he was clearly a vicious criminal, and was involved in the brutal killing of this girl, he only got 4 1/2 years. By 2002, he was a free man. then 5 years later he's involved in another first-degree murder. If there was proper justice, this piece of shit would have gotten a tough 25 year sentence in 1997, and my friend's nephew would still be alive today.

Justice failed, says mother

THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR
(Nov 6, 2007)

A Scarborough mother was "devastated" to learn the man charged with Hamilton's latest killing is the same person convicted of playing a role in her daughter's shooting death more than a decade ago.

Tracy Christie says she wants to reach out to the family of Xavier Miles, the 25-year-old Mohawk College student and father shot to death outside a James Street North bar on Oct. 5.

Two men were arrested last Thursday in Hamilton and charged with first-degree murder in connection to his death.

The name of one of them -- Feldon Bennett -- has haunted Christie for years. The now 29-year-old pleaded guilty in 1997 to a robbery charge connected to 16-year-old Christie Christie's slaying. Media reports of the sentencing said he pleaded guilty to his part in the robbery plot.

Christie Christie was babysitting her infant brother when three youths barged into the Scarborough apartment looking for drugs and cash. She died after she was shot in the abdomen with a sawed-off shotgun.

Bennett, who was 17 years old at the time, was not in the apartment but admitted to helping plan the robbery.

He was tried as an adult and sentenced to four and a half years.

Christie said she was "outraged" with the sentence.

She thinks the justice system failed by releasing Bennett back into the community too soon. She wanted more rehabilitation for the man she said showed little remorse for her daughter's death.

"I want him to know what he's done and the impact it has on his victim's family and on his own family, too."

Christie said that while she lives with the pain of losing her daughter every day, the memories have rushed to the surface since she learned of Bennett's recent arrest in Hamilton.

"I'm so sorry this happened to someone else," she said yesterday.

Christie said she leaned on other grieving parents, like the mothers of murdered teenagers Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy, in the aftermath of her own daughter's death. She wants to offer the same support to Miles's family.

The young father's family has not commented publicly since his alleged killers' arrests on Thursday.

Police said a powerful appeal by his aunt, Nadine Miles, several weeks ago helped lead to the arrests by bringing forward a flood of witnesses.

Miles was shot outside C.D. Martini Bar as the club emptied at closing time. Police said he had no connection to his attackers and was targeted following a dispute inside.

At the time, police said one man shot Miles in front of a large crowd while another man threw a beer bottle at him as he lay dying on the pavement.

After the arrests, Superintendent John Petz said the second man charged, Barrington Campbell, 28, was the suspected shooter. Both were charged with first-degree murder. Bennett was also charged with several weapons-related offences.

ok I'm confused now. you're saying that for the greater good, it's for the best that he got a lenient sentence in 1997? I thought the point of your thread was that violent criminals deserve severe jail time...

here's another recent case that caught my eye in Toronto. a guy caught an intruder in his girlfriend's home, and stabbed the guy. now *he* is the one up on charges for stabbing this freak who was hiding in their home

[ news.nationalpost.com ]

TORONTO — A man escorting his girlfriend to her home Sunday night discovered signs of entry to her house and, fearing for the woman’s mother sleeping inside, searched for intruders. A man was found hiding, Toronto police said. An ensuing struggle left the intruder bleeding from stab wounds.

As frightening as the incident was, it is the charging of the boyfriend with aggravated assault, punishable by 14 years in prison, that makes the case stand out in a clutter of urban crime.

It is the latest flashpoint in the debate over self-defence and protection of property after a number of high-profile cases across Canada brought a clamour for clarity and change.

Defence lawyers yesterday said it’s the sort of case that a defendant — the 28-year-old man charged with the stabbing — would want to be decided by a jury, where citizens can imagine themselves in a similar circumstance and ponder what they might do.

“You can defend your property, you can defend persons in your charge and you can defend yourself. In this case he can make an argument to all three, but he has to use proportional force,” said Gordon Dykstra, a criminal defence attorney in Abbotsford, B.C.

“I think if he gets in front of a jury and he’s halfway presentable, if he doesn’t have a criminal record and makes a good case for what happened, a jury will acquit him.”

But Toronto police suggest this might not be a perfect example for champions of self-defence rights.

“The man was charged because it is alleged the stabbing was excessive,” said Constable Tonyo Vella. “It is alleged that he stabbed the man a number of times. He’s fortunate to be alive.”

Key to the case is that the multiple stab wounds were inflicted both inside the home and outside, Const. Vella said, suggesting the occupants might have been able to close the door once he was outside and call police.

The scene of the incident was Parson Court, a pleasant street in west Toronto filled with large homes. The 32-year-old man who was stabbed was charged with break and enter.

Neither accused could be reached for comment.

Recent self-defence cases have not gone well for prosecutors.

Last month, Lawrence Manzer, of Burton, N.B., had a mistrial declared in charges stemming from a confrontation with intruders on his neighbour’s property. Sloppy paperwork was cited as the reason.

The same month Kim Walker, a Yorkton, Sask., welder, was sentenced to eight years after a jury declined to find him guilty of murder for killing his daughter’s boyfriend whom he deemed to be destroying his drug-addicted 16-year-old daughter. He was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

In May, Joseph Singleton, 46, a farmer in Taber, Alta., had his charges — for assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm, after he wounded a man who had just burgled his house with the blunt end of a hatchet — referred to an alternative measures program.

In March, prosecutors dropped gun charges against Ian Thomson, 53, of Port Colborne, Ont., who shot at three masked men caught firebombing his home while one yelled: “Are you ready to die?” The Crown said there was no reasonable prospect of conviction.

And last October, David Chen, a Toronto grocer in Chinatown became a celebrity when he was acquitted of charges after he tied up a repeat shoplifter in a citizen’s arrest.

Peter Lindsay, who represented Mr. Chen, said the public is galvanized by such stories.

“The courts have repeatedly said the self-defence sections of the Criminal Code are incredibly complicated. The provisions are really complex and are in need of an overhaul to simplify them,” said Mr. Lindsay.

“For the public to have confidence in the system, it is important for the system to be sympathetic to the victims of crime and understand to some degree who is the good guy and who is the bad guy.

“But that has to be balanced. You don’t have a right to just attack someone because they broke into your house. This is not the U.S.A. where your home is your castle and you have carte blanche once an intruder is inside your house.”

Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister, announced changes to the Criminal Code that would broaden the citizen’s arrest and self-defence laws but the amendments died with the dissolution of Parliament prior to the May election.

The bill will again be put forward this fall.

“We do intend to reintroduce that change this fall and get it passed as soon as possible,” said Andrew Bernardo, spokesman for Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice.
