Hey guys,

So I'm looking into buying a gym membership. I previously had one at the YMCA and it was nice, but I'm looking for a change of scene.
I've looked around, Nautilus Plus seems to be somewhat decently priced with their student discount.

So my question is, do any of you hold gym memberships? Where do you go? Prices and such? Just looking for some feedback before I go and drop down some cash :)

Thanks!
I'm feeling kapow! right now..

I don't go to the gym (I probably should, but that's not the point), but a friend of mine and his GF have been members of the Flex in LaSalle for quite some time and have been giving me good reviews about the place.

It's on Dollard across the street from the Octogon (LaSalle's library), you can take the 112 to get there from Jolicoeur metro.

When I lived in Ahuntsic, I used to jog to a sport complex (Complexe sportif Claude-Robillard) a few kilometers from my home, than was ready for exercise. It was something like 10-15$/month, if that isn't affordable...

I don't know if your school has a gym but I used to go at mine which was pretty nice, just a bit more expensive than the previous.

I should mention I live in Verdun, so something in the surrounding area would be nice, or downtown.
McGill's sports complex is a little out of the way for me, however been checking Concordia's and it looks cool.

Just keeping my options open a little while longer before I settle on one.
Keep the feedback coming!

i went to the YMCA at PSC and it was great. Small but not crowded and just what i needed

though now i go to a private gym at my work (FREE :D) and it's THE awesome

I have a friend who goes to Gym Expert in Verdun, he says it's great

it cost him 300$ for a year (so approximatly 25$ a month) so that's a good deal too, don't know if the deal is that good when you pay per month though, worth checking it out

and yes training outside is free, I do this with my dog, but it's also nice to go at the gym and do specific exercice for your needs. It's all possible at home but it's nice to have a trainer to tell you when and what to do, if you are doing it wrong, and to give you a tap on the back to push you to continue your hard work :)

if i was you I would look at something close of home or work, because when the gym is far, it's harder to find the motivation to go ;)

some people are friendly at gyms and they will give you tips, some are ok but other are great, those are things you'd have to learn the hard way, read about, or pay a trainer to get.

I understand that of course, but for weight training/muscle toning I'd rather speak with a trainer and have access to some boss equipment.
Not to mention, when you're paying for a membership, that's it own motivation to get up and use it (thats how it was when I was with the YMCA)

I'm with Energie Cardio for these reasons:
1. It's super close where I live. So no excuse not to go "it's tooo faar"
2. The staff at my gym are friendly, motivated, and well trained.
3. It has a punching bag. (I'm the only one that use it...)

Price is 45$/month, that's the contract for 1 year. It's cheaper if you're a student, but you also have be less than 25yo. It's a lot cheaper if you work for a company that has "prix corporatifs" with them. The membership also includes free group classes like Body Pump, Yoga, etc...

Supervised session with private trainer is approx. 50$/session. Yes it's worth it for the reasons Daf mentioned. They're the experts.

-----

Have you considered doing a martial arts? like Muay Thai or BJJ. Some of the fittest women I ever met were in my Muay Thai classes I took years ago. I'm considering taking it up again this year.

-----

I didn't want to post a wall of text but finally..
best thing to do is sign up at whatever place you pick for a short period of time, like 3 months. See if you like the environment or what not. If you like it, you can do a renewal for longer at a better price.

depends how many times you're planning to go too.
30$/month is a good deal, but if you only end up going to the gym 1 time per week..

I go 5-6x per week, so in the end it only cost me like 2$ each time.

very true. jogging is great. if you're just getting into jogging though, be careful and don't go too far. it's easy to do damage that you don't really feel until later.

taking up a martial art is good too. it gives you mental discipline and tranquility as well as a brutal workout. some people - myself included - might find it hard to motivate themselves to do shitloads of pushups and situps. but it's much easier in that setting, with a tough Sensei barking orders at you - lol.

when I did karate & kickboxing, every class.. they would make you do 200 pushups, 200 situps, 200 leg lifts etc etc. then you skip rope for three 3 minute rounds, then practice various kicks and punches on the heavy bag and do katas. then you hit the heavy bag hard for 3 minutes with your partner holding it, then switch and hold the heavy bag for your partner with it braced flat against your sternum, so your diaphragm absorbs the energy and gets used to taking hits.

this one really respected boxing academy in Hamilton makes you pick up someone in a fireman's life on your shoulders, and run round the block with them. and of course, the kickboxing school I was at also had all kinds of free weights and machines for you to use as well, whenever you want, 7 days a week.

doing a 3 hours class of something like that, 2 or 3 nights a week, will get you into great shape! especially if you want good abs, which most people do.

If you do decide to go the martial arts route, I personally recommend taking Wing Chun Kung Fu or Jeet Kune Do. out of karate, kickboxing and kung fu, I liked training Kung Fu the best ->

It's easy for me to go a lot because the gym is only a 10 minute walk. I rather pay a bit more for a gym near me.

I always found it surprising that some gyms are open 24 hours. I wouldn't have thought that enough people would come in to make it worth it. unless of course the gym is just a front ;)
