dunno if anyone knows what might be causing this.. running windows 7 on a Gateway NV54 laptop - got it last Christmas

past few weeks.. all of a sudden firefox will freeze and I have to manually shut it down. this is getting worse and worse. sometimes to the point where I will manually shut down all the frozen firefox windows, and then within seconds the new firefox window i open will also not respond and have to be manually shut down - very annoying

now there's a new twist. any time i click anything or try to scroll down - the computers thinks aboout it for a few seconds - like a lag - and then does what i asked it to do 10 seconds ago - this is using firefox. really need to fix this. I just installed trials of acid pro and soundforge - dunn o if that complicates things. norton has found nothing

AND one last thing - now when i leave the laptop it goes into standby and screen goes off. fine. only now when I wake it back up it keeps losing internet connection with our router and i have to go into the "troubleshoot" options to get it back on. it never did this before and now it's doing this at least a couple times a day. something is obviously gummng it up and fucking with it somehow. i never go to dodgy sites so it aint a virus I dont think

anyone have any idea?

If this is all Firefox's fault, try re-installing it with the newest version if you're not up to date. Or try Chrome.
I'm feeling not sleepy right now..

try tidying up your lappy too... and run a defrag etc. might not solve the firefox issue, but it certainly won't hurt.
I'm feeling like a sketchbook! right now..

If this happen only in Firefox, you may try to disable all the plugins
By the way, try to remove "Norton" too... this Anti-virus is a mess (Slow, heavy...)
Better try AVG/Avast for a free one or if you buy one,.. get Kaspersky, Nod32, GData, any other than Norton or McAffee
I'm feeling to be determined right now..

ok just uninstalled Norton Anti-virus 2011 and firefox, and then re-installed the latest Firefox Beat 4 - wow! totally as good as new.. super speedy! it's amazing how used I was getting to it being slowed down and gummed up. thanks again!
Update » recoil wrote on Thu Nov 11, 2010 @ 1:21am
actually I jumped the gun a bit there. the new firefox froze up like... 5 minutes after I installed it. apparently a lot of other people are having that problem too and no real answer.. so I am trying Opera instead

Firefox have baaad memory leak problems and as it's what I value most (well my email is but I could always use gmail webmail), I gave it a higher priority but through the hard way I found out that doing that require me to tweak most programs as a counterpart. Instead of spending a few minutes tweaking priorities with a GUI through the task manager, I created in-between solutions which are batch files which a couple examples will be pasted. The reason I call the in-between is that instead of my start menu directly point to the program as its default behavior, it point to the batch file which start the same thing but in another manner ; I changed the icons of the links to the one of the default link for user-friendliness.

firefox-priority-Abovenormal.bat
Start "firefox" /Abovenormal "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

Command-priority-High.bat
Start "Command" /D"%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%" /High "%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe" /MAX

Remember, that using this solution, from that day your system will not be filled with normal processes as most systems and will cause problems. For example, in my case when my Anti-Virus kick in, it's much more disruptive and it take me more than a few seconds to change it to a usable state.

Sometimes (rarely) I don't care about FF so I use this command instead of waiting for taskmgr:
wmic process where name="firefox.exe" call setpriority 32

How much RAM do you have on that computer Liam? What are the overall specs? Also, how fast is your CPU?

The cheapest NV54 as Celeron 1.6GHz and 1GB, you can be right it can be the specs of his laptop

I beg to differ.

If your browser fails on a machine with at least 1.6 Gig Cpu + 1gig ram, It's pretty much gotta be sofware issue. Or damaged pc/config issue. Anyone who sez otherwise needs a swift kick in the occipital lobe.

Maybe you did'nt try newer then win95 on that PC, lol...

With Linux maybe you can run very fast the webpage but with newer OS, it's gonna be very hard with something like Norton or any other programs running on the background with that kind of system.

in you device manager of your network card , in its properties of that said card , there should be a checkbox to make this device save current . remove it , it will prevent the computer from shuting it down when it deems to save current such as when in standby mode.

flash , java , firefox and all relating to browsing media and drm , has fallen into some ass lame updates i find that it confirm the upcoming impending doom of the norm driven idiocracy that will destroy all our nice things.

like he said , reinstall at worse, thou i would start with spybots report and would have to peek at the temp dir.

is utorrent loaded as well ?

mine's acting up as well , shuting down completely with a bug report during fb chat with mobiles . also flash asked me for an update this week when i strictly disabled update when i first installed it . its just a complete joke what they been doing with programs for the last two years.

IMO INSTALL PROGRAMS FROM 2008 AND DONT LOG ON THE NET. use a dummy machine for net browsing. youll save yourself from theses bad surprises the corp world is giving us

If you think so, I feel sorry for your descendance.
It's browsing, not fucking orbital window calculation, or genome mapping.

I know what you meen but most of users try OS like they'r out of the box (if retail one)
So most of users will ever need more power for the regular OSs
So yeah a single Celeron 1.6GHZ is pretty slow with 1GB on Windows (XP/Vista/7)

If you used a modified/optimised Windows OS or a good OS like Linux... yeah for sure your old 486 can run webpage... except farmville maybe lol

recoil , wats your status on this.

did you update spybot - plugins and firefox ?

is this a machine you consolidated your temp files & directories into one ?

what files are there ?

and does the windows log console have any yellow or red errors ?

what are the current running apps in task manager ?

did you find more in spybot's expert task manager integrated in spybot ?

did you do an internal system scan in expert mode spybot ?

i could go on forever , but start with this if you still are mingled with the issue.

but i need info to work from. will be waiting :)

Moloch, this is just a tech support thread, why all the hate? Someone shit in your poorly spelled cron fleaks?

I don't get why you keep talking about how people are idiots if they think the specs have something to do with it, considering that even top of the line machines run into browser problems. Stop being an asshole and start offering up some solutions, you seem to think you know it all. When you troubleshoot you have to brainstorm, and it's much more useful to explain why not than to throw around your generally misanthropic insults.

Yeah Liam I think there are a few things to consider:

- driver problems, particularly with the video card, which could explain why scrolling causes problems, could of course also be video issues
- browser cache or Java problems, ie some sort of script that can't get purged

I say these two are possible culprits because you said that scrolling causes issues. I had a failing video card that didn't like Flash-based pages much or scrolling, because it had to move the whole page around. I would get artifacts for a while (lines across the screen that wouldn't go away, etc) and I would often see the whole computer freeze if not just the browser crashing when I tried to load videos. I think there's a diagnostic tool out there somewhere that can confirm that, and really, if I'm wrong big deal, I'm just relating the last time I saw that happen.

It's not going to do a hell of a lot but try clearing the browser's cache too. I know it sounds useless and everyone will probably say so but sometimes these mystery problems have to do with some stupid error that is in the cache. Not saying I think that's what it is though. One way to check that I guess is to totally uninstall Firefox and then reinstall it. But Java is rather powerful and can sometimes act almost like a virus if badly scripted.

I'm not doing this for a living but I used to, so please god let anyone who disagrees please not be a dick about it.

There are always things slowing down the internet experience. For my area of Toronto there's really bad bottlenecking around 9pm and I can't download shit or stream videos at all, speedtest gives me 0.6 down, 0.5 up, really crappy for Rogers, but they don't give a shit about Vaughan and Oakwood. I think it's because the Rogers trucks are red.

i dont think it has to do with its driver , my concern right now would at least have answers with my previous query been answered.

wat doest the console say ? any errors in there
