The following is a conversation (via Chat) that myself and Dj Sarcastic had a couple of weeks back about the differences and merrits of both digital and analogue mixing... I thought some of you might be interested seeing as how this debate has turned up in the past. I'm curious as to what you folks think, give it a chance, at the least, our dialogue is pretty entertaining...

The medium might indeed be the message, but vinyl was the message 10-20 years ago. The message in 2010 is digital.

well, from my point of view, im not convinced that the medium in this case is "vinyl". because if it where, wouldnt that also make "vinyl" the intended message. even 10 years ago, im pretty sure musicians and djs werent trying to tell the world about the message of "vinyl", so much as they where trying to tell the world about emotions. lets be frank and honest together here, when you play out in the year 2010, your not trying to tell everyone "digital"

... so rather id say the medium here is "music" and the message is "whatever emotions the music carves out in the listener"

newer doesnt always mean better. i think more often, it just means different. in that sense i will point out that the electric guitar never replaced the accoustic guitar and for the same reasons, digital cant replace vinyl... (if that makes any sense at all)
I'm feeling pure terror right now..

I dont think that new technology should emulate old technology. I think technology should try and bring out new possibilities and bring out different skills in people. mixing with ableton for example, possibilities are more than infinite. Although i do like to see a dj that can beatmatch and cue lightning fast, beatmatching isnt something exciting for a crowd to look at, there is no instant soundification of this labor, it's just prep work... this is the kind of thing that digital mixing can minimise and in some cases, completely remove opening to new possibilities...

instead of beatmatching you could have two tunes being mashed up and add hits from an accapella that you rexed in a drum rack

you could be adding the occasionnal incidental with a side-chain compressor on the rest of the mix to cut everything out while some jamaican says something about tampons

you could be playing a tune that is stripped down of its melody and play one live, loop it, than effect it and change parameters of your synth, add drums, loop them... mix your new little remix with another tune using filters and cutomized effects

doing this kind of thing in ableton means working on a set of skills that is different than traditionnal djing. it means prep work before the show, not during the show... Unfortunatly this process is not one that is streamlined or prefabricated because it can be absolutely anything you want it to be.

Anyways, what I'm saying is that, a lot of djs seem have a certain sense of guilt when using technology... because djing was harder before, we feel we should have to face the same challenges as our predecessors. With this guilt, djs are concentrating on trying to get the aproval of predecessors and trying to surmount the challenges of olde instead of finding creative ways to impress with new possibilities and such.

I personnaly dj with cd and vinyl, because it is, as of yet, it's the best performance i can give and because it is the more practical setup. I keep the technology and the headache of crazy setups for live shows instead.
I'm feeling risk 2nite@passeport right now..

great post ufot!!
i really got a kick out reading that!!
i've really been feeling where steve is coming from these days.
i've been buying digital files and producing digitally for the past few years and it's kinda been turning me off of music all together...
sometimes i think that having no limitations is in itself a limitation.
so many innovations in the technology, yet i'm not hearing any innovations in the music???
like really whats up with that?
anyway... i don't wanna go over the pros and cons of analog vs digital or new school vs old school for the 10000000th time...
but i really feel that digital media is missing something...
i'm not going to say it's bass, warmth, frequencies or anything remotely logical.
call me crazy... but i think it's SOUL.
There's really something special about records.
There's a story behind every one... it's like they have blood or some kind of life force behind them.
recently i've kinda been diving into some hip hop stuff, so i've been doing some scratching and sampling, and me and the guy i've been working with decided we needed some new battle records, so we hopped in the whip and hit the shops for a big digging session...
unfortunately we didn't find a single battle record ANYWHERE, but man...
it felt so good to dig again.
just spending hours sifting through all those life stories and lost dreams, i honestly felt a sense of peace that i haven't felt in years.
like the whole whole world outside the shop didn't exist for those few hours and time was just standing still...
unfortunately it wasn't...
and i got that tap on my shoulder... "we're closing up guys"
which gave me that little lump in throat, cuz it's something i've heard from so many shops that just couldn't compete in the cold soulless world of the digital market.
so i made the best of it.
dropped 40 bucks on my fat stack of black boogers and broken dreams.
and proceeded home to sample the shit out of an old ed allen work out record.
what it all means?
probably nothing...
but i can tell you this.
There's something special in those records...
and there is no key commands that'll ever take that away.
I'm feeling republican right now..

I gotta say, I'm old enough to have been around before the digital mediums came about, and One of the major difference that I can think of is that back in the days, music was made by musicians that actually jammed and played TOGETHER. Music wasn't always played to a click track, either so you kinda got a more dynamic feel to it.
Electronic music really broadened the spectrum as to the quantity and variety of sounds that are possible to use and create, but at the expense of the interaction between the musicians.
Also, it has become standard for productions to be "perfect sounding" and clean and tidy, but often the beauty is/was in the imperfections.
I remember the days when i would lock myself into a rehearsal space for hours with my buddy's to compose music and those days where great, but I wouldn't go back. I love the digital medium for its versatility and the fact that the medium itself seems limitless.
