So there;s this humming noise that comes and goes from my technics sl-1200 and for the life of me I can't find where it's coming from. It sounds as if it's not grounded.

The ground cable is definitely connected to my mixer, and I've checked all the wiring on the inside and it all looks ok.

The next step would be replacing the signal and ground cables, but I thought I would get RW's opinion on this before I start spending money. Does anyone know how much that would cost/where the best place for repairs would be?
I'm feeling b right now..

Have you thoroughly cleaned the cells/needles and all contacts in the cartridges/headshells/tonearms, with alcohol on a Q-tip?

I'd say go with lemon juice if you want to clean the contacts, it will remove any oxydation...

but I doubpt that faulty needly contact would create a hum... if it sounds like it's not grounded, then it probably isnt, it might be the contact between the wire and the table... I do beleive that the casing of the 1200 is grounded so I'd suggest trying to ground the table directly (hold a wire to the casing of the table and the other on the ground or casing of your mixer... that should do the trick... if that does not work than the problem isnt the ground wire...

maybe try and plug in the table into a different circuit, not just another power bar or power outlet... use an extention to plug into an outlet in another room...
I'm feeling lovely right now..

For 1 table replacing the Cable and work done is about 75$ is a good deal. U can get it done in a couple days, my table still works like a charm. If u go to Steve's or Moog you will Pay 2-3 times that! Will also take 2-3 weeks give or take...The place next door to me a week max! They did mine in 4 days.

Good Luck

75$ bucks for four solders sounds like a pretty awefull deal... this is really the kind of thing I would highly suggest to look for around on youtube for instructions and DIY with a buddy's soldering iron

obviously, if you dont want the mod, just redo all connections like it was originally... although the problem you're having probably has nothing to do with the phono cable themselves... its proabbly just the gound wire that's fucked... like I said before, take any wire that isnt varnished (speaker wire works... or even the tip of an rca wire would work) have one end touch the any metalic part of your table and have the other end touch any metalic part of your mixer, or the casing of a desktop computer... or directly in the ground... wtv... if that works, than dont bother changing your phono wires, just change the the ground wire... unless you want to mod

lol someone in the comments of that vid is asking how to gound a cdj-400... I had a laugh

btw, lynzyn, I just called moog, getting rca's changed off a tech-12 (and I'd like to repeat that this is NOT what needs to be repaired in this case) will not cost you 2-3 times 75$... it'll cost you 70$ plus the wire... if you take theirs, it's 30$

please get your shit straight
I'm feeling lovely right now..

If you are going to pay to have the ground wires fixed, you may as well shell out to have two new grounded cables put on your techs. The rcas on techs do tend to be pretty shite and the you have the added benefit of not having to attach a ground wire anymore.
I'm feeling ez sessions monday wut! right now..

Rawali the whole thing next door to me Costs 75$ ( maybe 5-10 more since i got it done last year) the wire (a good wire) and work done!!!! Last time i called Moog and Steve's cost more than that. (which is the case if u take the wire and why wouldn't you) But if u think that the wire 30$ plus 70$ for work, is less than 75$ for the whole deal maybe we need to get a math lesson!!!

Maybe i exaggerated a bit, but it does cost more at Moog than next door to my work NO?????????

30$ for a wire? Lol are you getting Monster Cables put into the thing??? And 70$ for a 10 minute soldering job is a total fucking rip-off.. Something like replacing the cables on a set of turntables shouldn't cost you more than 30-40$, and even that 40 is pushing it a little.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

get me a math lesson? no... YOU need to get lessons in not having your head up your ass.

1. Two times 75$ is 150$, moog fixes your shit for 100$, I didnt say it was less than 75$ I said it was less than 150$ and it just so happens to NOT be in god forsaken ville Saint-Laurent done by people no one's ever heard of before.

2. RCA cable are NOT what needs to be fixed in this case, the ground wire is the problem.

3. 100$ is a rip off, 75$ is a rip off 50$ is a rip off... if you need to change wires on something there is no reason in hell why you or someone you know wouldnt do if for free.

kthxbye
