I'm a a beginner at drawing but I'd like to learn from experience. What I need help with is the scenario, the script. It will be, or be based on, cyberpunk so I'm looking for a somber mood.

What I was thinking of was to do like the PC game System Shock and have a real world problem, like a door not opening or a distributor too expensive, and with some kind or technology be able to jump into cyberspace to manipulate the machines, then back in the real world (futuristic) the problem would be solved. Cyberpunk is a dystopian setting so corporations/government are oppressing people.

My main problem was to find a sociological setting (dystopia) so my character would cyber-teleport, especially because of something current western societies would find unjust ; I think differences between United States and Europe would suffice but perhaps something even worse like paying for air or water (like bottle-price for tap water). I haven't read dystopian stories so I can't be inspired that way. :\

Thanks for your help :)

Get some RPG sourcebooks, they're great material for writing. Get your hands on Shadowrun, Rifts, even Warhammer stuff like Necromunda. You can find these books used or as scanned PDF torrents. Many of them offer details about cyberpunk settings, trypical character profiles and even technical specs on cyberpunk tech (weapons, cybernetics, vehicules ect)

...and you leave out Cyberpunk 2020!

You want to do something Cyberpunk you need to familiarize yourself with the genre.. Grab the first two William Gibson trilogies, the Sprawl and Bridge ones: [ en.wikipedia.org ] and also Burning Chrome, as well as Bruce Sterling - Snowcrash, Mirrorshades: A Cyberpunk Anthology, and The Hacker Crackdown: Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

I'm just doing some ugly drawings, not something that has a chance of inspiring people. It's ok I'll just invent some words or code like "protocol H304" for the motivation and explain those as inspiration come to me.

Thanks for the references. If I ever get some skills, I'll look them up.

Cyberpunk is a lot more than just a mood or technical stuff.. Like the whole jumping in and out of computers is way more sci-fi than it is cyberpunk. In CP stuff yeah there are hackers and high levels of technology, but it's not the year 5000..

most of the stuff tends to be more along the lines of what technology will be like in 5 or so generations in terms of hardware, but the world hasn't really changed that much.. Just imagine your city of choice, but in 20 years from now; the rich will be richer, the poor will be poorer, the rich areas of the city will be spotless and patrolled by private police, the poor areas will be akin to a DMZ..

[ project.cyberpunk.ru ] has a ton of good essays and lots of stuff that's related to the cyberpunk style.

There are also lots of nice animations/movies you can watch to give you some ideas. There's a good list of them on that site [ www.cyberpunkreview.com ] with reviews and lots of pictures.

Watch Andrei Tarkovsky's "Stalker". Best dystopian story I have ever seen on film.

well if we're going into movies, these all have cyberpunk elements of varying degrees:

- Hardware
- Johnny Mnemonic
- RoboCop
- Blade Runner
- The Lawnmower Man
- (upcoming) Neuromancer
- Videodrome

watch both ghost in the shell movies

Besides the obvious gibson stuff I'd suggest the 'hyperion cantos' series by dan simmons (although it is very sci fi, it has some major cyberpunk elements). It's 4 long books though but it has some great stuff about AI.

Play 'snatcher' for sega cd! (you can download it and emulators).. it is practically blade runner in japan.
