sorry not related to America.... but I was reminded of this article I read today about government fuckery

this is disgraceful...

the other day a UN official visited this region in Central Asia and declared it a massive environmental disaster

basically... there is this inland sea called the Aral Sea in the former Soviet Union... 4th largest lake/sea in the world

It was filled with alllll kinds of fish... for God knows how long, all the people who lived around it survived off the fishing industry

well... beginning in the 1940s, these geniuses in the Soviet government decided to change all that. They diverted two of the big rivers that fed it

Instead of flowing into the sea, they were diverted for irrigation projects. They thought they would turn those areas into huge farming zones for melons, cotton, rice etc

the thing is... *nothing* could grow in these places naturally. it's a desert. ->

and not only that - the irrigation canals were poorly built. they weren't even waterproofed properly... so as much as 75% of the water that was being diverted leaked out and was gone!! 75 % !!

the leaders who oversaw this project knew it would eventually destroy the sea... but nobody would dare challenge them.

In the 80s, they tried to start a project that pump water back in save it... but people living in Russia weren't really interested in spending money on something so far away, so the project never got off the ground.

so- long story short... 90% of this once-massive inland sea has pretty much dried right up, and all the people are ruined.

So now that they cant fish, they are still pathetically trying to keep their fish canneries open. So they import the fish that they used to catch on their doorstep from the Baltic Sea, 2000 miles away.. and they chop up their now useless old fishing boats for scrap metal to use for the cans...

and there is now big clouds of toxic salty sand that blow for thousands of miles and make people sick.

WAY TO GO

fuck. that had to be the most inefficient ass-backward corrupt regime in the history of the planet

and now that the Soviets are gone, the region has broken down into a few equally-corrupt backward republics who dont like each other and thus refuse to co-operate on a solution to save what's left.

great!

I saw that in a report about China well likely following their footstep.

I think it was based on:
# China's Water Crisis: The Case of Tianjin (Tientsin)
# A. J. Jowett
# The Geographical Journal, Vol. 152, No. 1 (Mar., 1986), pp. 9-18
