Do you think its plausible to start a telecom cooperative? Like a not-for-profit telecom company owned by the people for the people?

I fail to see why I should have to pay money to a rich white guy every month just because his dad managed to monopolize the communications industry of our country.
I'm feeling a message in a bottl right now..

it is,
do you have hundreds of millions to rent bandwidth on a satellite?
do you have a place to make a call centre and tech support, with the knowledge to form these employees.
do you have the money to be able to sign a contract with cell phones compagny to distribute thier cell phones(ie: motorolla, apple, sony ect...)
do you have the technical knowledge to build up a network that would be as large, as fast, and as stable as the other companies?

no?

you got your answer.
I'm feeling fidgety right now..

Gamos, everyday you pay money to a rich white guy. Harper gets your money through taxes without you even spending.

If your cellphone company charges too much, cancel it and stick to landlines or consider taking this opportunity to finally move to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea where THIS problem, as well as rich white men, are prwctically unheard of.

Its actually being done in Lac St-Jean I think? Or somewhere north of us in any case. A small community set up their cooperative and service goes down, they just fix it themselves.

then again, maybe it was just an internet service coop...

more like it, internet.

cellphones has to go through satellites at one point, or by mega antennas. both would cost 10 000 times more a month that what gamos will make in his entire life =P

(stupid questions get you stupid answers!)

If they can afford it in this lac st jean, it can't be that expensive to do, can it? I mean this said cooperative can start small, and grow. How is this dave wireless and wave able to start from essentially nothing? Are they losing money hand over fist? I doubt it.

Second, in india 500m people have cell phone plans, and rates are about 2 cent per minute. Seriously, we're getting ripped off. Most people in India can't even get hot water, but they get cell phone rates at 2 cents per minute. We're getting fucked around by corporate interests in this country, and I for one have had enough

ahaha...pass. 4 more years was way too daunting :P

In all seriousness we get ripped off.

Please note that with a 70%+ urban/rural dist of population, Canada should be one of the cheaper countries for cell phone bills.

Second, theres no reason to think that pen-stroke regulation wouldn't work. You could legistlate that Canadian plans have to be 10% cheaper than the avg OECD rates. The shareholders of Telus, Rogers, and Bell (a lot of whom are foriegners), would be a bit upset, but Canadians would be better off. And isn't our government suppose to work for us... canadians? And don't tell me thats bullshit, because they took penstroke legislation to oil trusts in 2006, and alberta took it to oil sand companies in 2008. The basic idea was that Canadians we're getting ripped off. The results were higher taxes for oil trusts and higher royalty rates for oil sands companies.

Telus, Rogers and Bell have some of the highest profit margins in the world. Why? Its because they price gouge us.

I've a theory about people venting their frustrations on issues that are way to big for them to actually do somethng about. Makes 'em feel empowered, yet negates action.

So yeah, get a job, learn to plan your budget, anything, but don't blame the world cuz you ain't happy with your cellphone bills.

Gamos is actually pretty rights; north american telcos charge more for less service than pretty much everywhere else in the world, not to mention our phones are a fucking joke.

In the UK for example, the only phones with "minutes" on them are phones you buy like, in a dep, that are rechargable with a phone card and don't have you "wired" to any particular network, whereas any actual phone service (with a phone company/contract) pretty much starts at unlimited w/all the options (voicemail, call waiting, caller ID), unlimited text and 500 megs/month 3G internet, and that's like the equivalent to 25-30$/month; the only things that raise that are if you want a long distance plan or some special service.

Phones in Japan are fuckin' out of this world; they're running on 4G for starters, most phones have HD recievers so you can watch HDTV on the morning comute, integrated biometric scanners to use for identifying the owner of the phone because the phone acts as a gateway to your bank account/credit card with a PayPal-like system.. same with your work ID and your metro card; put your thumb on the scanner and wave it over the box at the turnstiles/work and it lets you in..

Same with the internet; ok we're still fairly high on the list, but I mean come on:

I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

Wireless profit margin, 23 developed nations
1. Canada 45.9%
2. Italy 41.0%
3. New Zealand 40.8%
4. Switzerland 38.3%
5. Greece 37.6%

46% profit margin...the highest number in the oecd.

You guys don't get it. This isnt a problem for me. Like yeah, Im pissed off because for using 200mins and 25mb of data I pay 60$ a month. But its much larger than that.

First, cell phones enhance productivity, and thus wages. By using non-perfect competition tactics to inflate wireless usage prices, telecoms are actually holding back your hourly wages. They're not only stealing your after tax dollars, theyre reducing your pre-tax dollars.

Second, cell phones provide safety children and peace of mind to parents. Especially with the declining service of payphone, its almost a necessity for high school and junior high kids to have phones. But imagine a family a 4 with 2 parents working making 60k a year. Thats 50k a year after taxes. And if theyre spending 50$ per person on phone plans, well its bullshit. Thats 5% of their after tax income. Is that fair? Its obviously not.

Third, its bullshit that less people arent upset about this. If you're being over charged by 50% a month, thats 400$ a year. I dunno how much you make, but for me, thats a huge amount of money. If people were more upset, the gov't would be forced to actually do something about it. Instead we're getting some bullshit action - windmobile is 5-10% cheaper than rogers...woo wut a deal. I think you guys are forgetting that is a democracy we live in. We can force change.

You need your kids to have cel phones ? You tell them you need to know where they are in a voice mail or email ; even better, you tell them you need to know in advance if they won't be going home after school.

i agree on some points that we pay too much, however look at either the size of the countries or the populations with cheaper airtime rates than us. notice that we have a large land mass to cover with a small population....
what i think is crap though is that i think we're the only country with cell phones that HAVE to pay for call display

anyway think about it

PS.. Wind and Dave are new entrants that will have limited coverage, ie ontario to bc, but no east coast coverage and only in major urban centres. so country bumpkins will have live on a land line or stick with the big 3. ALSO wind is part of globalive...a huge cellphone company in the middle east and india owned by an egyptian billionaire....so...unless you got crazy corporate backing...
I'm feeling battery operated right now..
