I have an external hd that comes in an acomdata enclosure... this enclosure is a god damned piece of shit! after less than a year of usage, all of a sudden, I get a message telling me that this device would perform faster if plugged into a usb 2.0 ports...

I own a year old macbook... there are no usb 1 ports on this and it does this on any computer, any port! I looked around and found out that this happens to a whole bunch of people... after a while, the usb chip in the enclosure shits all over itself and this happens..

I bought two new external hds and am transfering all the data into them but... 175 gigs... @ usb 1 speed... I'll let you guys do the math to figure how many decades it's gonna take to transfer my shit

Now I tried removing the hd from the enclosure and putting it into another enclosure but it says that my drive is not readable... WTF? back in the acomdata enclosure and it works fine... @ usb 1 speed...

I'm guessing this is because of the stupid automatic softward the enclosure installs when you plug it in... but I'm wondering if there is any way to override this bullshit and have acces to the hd from a normal... unretarded enclosure?

anyone?
I'm feeling lovely right now..

dont you mean an INTERNAL laptop HD in an enclosure ? or a EXT HardDrive??? because you keep talking about this enclosure and enclosure are usually for laptop drives or normal IDE drives ..
I'm feeling analyzing charts right now..

well... most external hds I've seen are just enclosures with normal IDE drives... I've yet to see anything else... I might be wrong though

but yes... this is a metal box with a lil' chip thing that converts the IDE cable into USB 2...

Some boxes come with a software that used encryption, sometime a very crappy one's, sometime a better one

If it's the case, you better transfer the data at the speed the box will let you then you install your hard disk drive in a good enclosure like Vantec (Nexstar 3 are very good) and put back the data.

Or if you'r lucky try to install the "driver" of the enclosure acomdata to any other enclosure then you can be able to use the new enclosure as the other one...
I'm feeling none right now..

either that or I buy the same piece of shit enclosure just to do the transfer...

lol

imma transfer all the shit from the drive over the next couple of days and then put the drive in my other enclosure, format the fuck out of it and bash the shitty enclosure with a baseball bat

I had an eSATA enclosure that I was using for a while to run my mac's internal hard-drive after my shit got fucked up... converting SATA to USB through a shitty, shitty camera style USB cable that kept going flaky. I ended up losing my whole hard drive because the cable was unreliable, and never ended up being able to recover the data. Generally speaking, if the enclosure is cheap-ass, expect death.

I now run my Macbook off an external WD MyBook drive, and it works great. Firewire 800 cable, fast access, computer runs as it should and I can crunch some pretty serious numbers off of it even though it's external. If you can get a decent external drive of this sort and a better enclosure, you may be able to back that drive up before it gets raped.
I'm feeling dorksided! right now..

Who else would like to hear Dee's thoughts on the matter ?

Maybe you should try this : put your HD in an oven, let sit at 450 for 40 minutes, add some water and freshly picked
tomatoes, stir and let stand for 5 mins. That'll do the trick. Also add some salt and install a few USB drivers for good measure.

This will clear things up. :-)

hehe... yeah I went with the painful, transfering of everything usb1 speed... 40 hours and counting

Now dee may intervene if she wishes... as long as she can come up with something a bit more creative than the oven...

unicorns are a good start
