As he squeezed the doorknob, I knew. His breath was strained and his hands were rocks. The footsteps haunted the halls as if they were contemplating their inevitable wearing down. I wondered what news had brought him to such agitation.

Then, as he entered his office, he shouted and howled. The room had been searched. If there was one thing that was worse than having being broken into, it was definitely to not know why.

He did not hide piles of gold nor did he own a rarity. He was a man of no particular talent and of scarce knowledge. He was Beige.

I could almost hear the desperate deconstructing of his brain, reviewing every single detail of the last few days.

I saw.
The landlord had come earlier, petted me, went in the office, stole the [insert object here] and walked out grinning. That smile was one of-- satisfactory malice.

...

Knocks at the door, they almost sound like stabbings. Two giants rush into the office. They clutch his arms and tug him out of the house, then throw him in the yellow truck and drive off in a storm of screeching sirens.
