Computer Is Weird... Help Meeeeeeh

 Coolness: 140705 | so I was fixin up my computer, changed the power supply, added a tv tuner, changed the dvd... for some reason though the fan on the motherboard (not the cpu fan, the small bridge fan) isn't turning... computer still works for a couple of minutes but then it gets suuuuuuuuper sluggish and shuts off...
wtf is up with my fan... and can you buy those kind of fans on their own? |

are you sure that you didn't unplug it whilst changing your stuff ? what's your power supply wattage ? 300 ? 350 ? 400 or more ? maybe it's not enough for your new tv tuner and dvd... you can check the voltages with something like Everest : [ up.sur-la-toile.com ] |

| Coolness: 140705 | fan is plugged in, tried taking it out, cleaning it up a lil and just seing if there was some physical damage to it... there is no evidence of physical damage but the fan doesnt spin freely like a CPU or GPU fan... is that normal?

maybe the fan is just active when it's needed... i don't know for yours, it could be ! if you check it with open computer, chances are it's not hot enough :P |

trix 0 = deefinitely test voltages trix 1 = make shure all components works, if you cant , work small up by addin the components and testing eveytimes trix 2 = reconnect everything trix 3 = replace fan at once , and buy new HEAT SYNC COMPOUND. recompound eveything. if you wondered what was the 3 ring on death on an xbox , its old heat sync paste that doesnt work, thus non disipating heat on critical component. so change the old paste for new one. cost 50 cent in a computer store. trix 4 = when your completely shure hardware is okay , move on to software . and only then Update » cutterhead wrote on Mon Jul 27, 2009 @ 12:51pm your onboard fan controller could be fried, you could simply bypass all that and hook the fan straight on the powersupply and cool it from there.
QUESTION : in your bios (hit del-f1-f2-f10 or whatever it is to get in there on bootup . then go look at monitoring or powermanagement . you should see fan speed from there . you cant be shure if it worksd using that , since in both case fan broken or controller broken , the fan speed will be ERROR so best try a new one, if it doesnt turn its broken. if its written 12v on it conncect it on your yellow and black wire if its written 5v on it connect it on your red and black wire. if it turns its good , if not its that its broken Update » cutterhead wrote on Mon Jul 27, 2009 @ 12:53pm thou watch out , if its short . youll put extreme stress on your powersupply that could eventually lead to burning the psupplys components |

but yea a dead fan can either freeze there , short , open , but what you can always espect is the fan turning freely. you can try to save it by blowin countless amount of wd40 but it wont last since its not carbon base protected , witch fan use. you can use mixer fader oil, fader rejuvenator . and hope ill come back. but expect changing it. and NEVER run your p4 without proper cooling , and a neerby fan isnt enough. is it a laptop or a tower. if you need parts for laptop i can help you find your fan. |

| Coolness: 131615 | good luck , you should get it stable once cooling is done properly : dont forget to put thermal compound between your fan and chip.
you said in the other thread the power cable is split before entering the room, make shure there isnt a big appliance eating all the juice before it gets to your comp. also if you could get a multimeter , make shure the ground relation with common is 0v and live and common is 120v , any other voltage means your twisted in polarity with an other applicance in your setup. hope this helps for now. watch if your pci tv tuner isnt conflicting as well. (device manager/bios irqs) ps. if your having a 480w powersupply that isnt fead with proper current (ie 60v relation between live and ground and 60v relation with common and live . while still having the 120v relation with the common and live . then that could lead to fucked up problem like your having . its almost like a brown out state and normally is resolved as soon as connected in a clean power outlet. ) it need to be able to acheive the 480w and if it doesnt the fast switching power supply fails . this isnt an analog psu so be carefull. |
