i am using my dad's laptop. and just last night, when i click on some pages - random [ rave.ca ] pages, for example - it brings up a warning page with this text

Insecure Internet activity. Threat of virus attack
Due to insecure Internet browsing your PC can easily get infected with viruses, worms and trojans without your knowledge, and that can lead to system slowdown, freezes and crashes.
Also insecure Internet activity can result in revealing your personal information.
To get full advanced real-time protection for PC and Internet activity, activate WinPC Antivirus.
We recommend you to protect your PC now and continue safe Internet browsing.

then it gives you the option of proceeding - not recommened - to the "insecure page"

it never did this before, and i havent downloaded anything other than firefox.exe and havent gone to any dodgy sites whatsoever

any ideas? is some internet browser setting set too high? i really wanna fix this befre he sees it... hehe

any insight is appreciated

DO NOT install ANY anti-virus without getting info on it. That looked like the ActiveX trojan bug trying to trick you into downloading the bug. They warn you of the "viral" activity and then you think you're infected so you download their "free software" which ends up being the trojan itself.
If you really wanna know what that warning is, type it into to google and see what comes up, sometimes there are forum discussions that give you answers on what it is exactly. If that was Windows warning you about viral or corrupt activity then you might want to look into getting some protection for it, just incase.

You would need to BUY a program like SUPER anti-spyware 4.25, don't just install anything and everything your browser spits at you, especially if it's free :S

People sometimes...

The first thing you do is check if your computer already has an antivirus program installed. You should invariably find an icon of some sort in the system tray at the bottom right of your screen next to the hour. If there's already one active there, why the hell would you need another one ? If that stupid popup is telling you it found a virus, concentrate your efforts on finding out why your current antivirus program didn't find anything but some dumb browser popup did.

If the computer doesn't have an antivirus program, 1. how come and 2. you should consider ANY browser popup advertising a product to be the equivalent of a door-to-door salesman waking you at 4am to try and sell you a vacuum cleaner.

Good products are the ones that sell themselves, that after looking into them and getting info, YOU will go out and get, not ones that are sold door to door, by telemarketers calling you every fucking hour to tell you how fucking great their product is and through fucking incessant browser popups.

AVG Free is one of the most (if not the most) popular choice in antivirus programs probably because their product is barely advertised anywhere and doesn't bother half the fucking planet with shitty browser popups.

Ironically enough, all browser popups saying it found a virus will actually install shitloads of viruses if you press ok an have their failed antivirus conviniently NOT see this brand new infection (broswer hijacks are rarely seen by antivirus progs).

Bottom line is, browser popups with products advertised = DO NOT WANT.

People who click those "WIN A FREE IPOD" banners should be shot at the slightest hint of complaints on their part.
I'm feeling skate 2 right now..

watch out for this one , next time could be a dead end,

keeps drive snapshot / binary copies esp. for that.

dns redirection / poisoning is becoming more common and is spawning to the mac / linux / unix / pc

NOTHING is 100% safe , but having a failback system is better than nothing.

Mac's and Linux both require the admin password to modify your hosts file, so no, viruses are not making their way to mac/linux..

As of 2006[update], there are relatively few security exploits targeting Mac OS X (with a Unix-based file system and kernel).[17] The number of viruses for the older Apple operating systems, known as Mac OS Classic, varies greatly from source to source, with Apple stating that there are only four known viruses, and independent sources stating there are as many as 63 viruses. Virus vulnerability between Macs and Windows is a chief selling point, one that Apple uses in their Get a Mac advertising.[18] In January 2009, Symantec announced discovery of a trojan that targets Macs.[19] This discovery did not gain much coverage until April 2009.[19]

FYI...

"WinPC Antivirus (or WinPCAntivirus, Win PC Antivirus, Win PCAntivirus) is a rogue anti-spyware software. WinPC Antivirus is a replica of WinPC Defender (also know as Win PC Defender, WinPCDefender, Win PCDefender) rogue anti-spyware programs. WinPC Antivirus can enter a user’s computer system via a Trojan which sneaks into the system through security holes, such as spam emails or it can be installed by another malware. WinPC Antivirus generates fake system warning alerts, fake scan reports and fake error messages about the “infection” on the user’s computer system to trick and scare him into buying the “full” version of WinPC Antivirus software. WinPC Antivirus should not be trusted or purchased as it is rogue anti-spyware software and should be deleted immediately!"

I have no idea what the hell you just said.

Mac, Linux, Windows, UNIX, BSD.. they all have a host file and that file is often changed by viruses.

If you didn't know that, you're an idiot (because you're laughing at me for pointing this out).

BTW, you're retarded.

makes me laugh how that lamer that posted before you basdini seems to thinks hes aware on the subject.

hes talking about ONE engine of the whole ordeal of name resolution, and thats for the machine to translate ip to name. AND THATS IT. a lot of PROTOCOLS ARENT EVEN TOUCHING THAT FILE AND SO AS I , I blanked my hostfile , my whole farm is called from direct ips not even the host file. THE HOST FILE IS CONSIDERED OLD AND SHOULDN BE USED . i learned that in '98. ITS BEEN SUPERCEDED.

(troll)you dont poke much in your /var it shows. and i wouldnt beleive you if you told me you custom build your kernel from scratch. cause your a stock idiot.

resolv.conf while your at it. for an retard calling idiot you exceed pretty good at it (guy above, not you basdini)

for the 4th time, can you acknowledge your puny security has flaws, or you still have that diploma shoved too far up your ass ?

im can see it from here , you watched that 2 guy one mac commercial , and you tought they were trying to save you from evil ibm & microsoft.

name calling is what they were doing , and you picked up the nasty habbit quite quickly. koodos, troll idiot.

if anything you could be the host of a battery of active/dormant code and you woudlt know it cause your like a blind beleiver in god or something...
