I was pretty disappointed, actually... it seems that they spent so much time making sure that it would look right, that they completely neglected making it feel right. Part of what made the Watchmen so great is that it's fundamentally different from most comic books because it deals with predominantly ordinary people who moonlight as heroes... cops, mechanics, soldiers, street people... and the focus is on their lives, their fears, and the general paranoia that there's an apocalypse coming and even the most powerful among them will be powerless to stop it. The film mostly runs away from any sort of real character development and makes the mistake of bending the story to conform to a more typical superhero/action movie stereotype - with some nudity to keep it edgy. The use of music is, imho, intrusive and terrible... and at times there was a part of my brain wishing I could simply unwatch the movie so that there would be no trace of it to taint my enjoyment of reading the book again. |
