Ringu is the original. It's more of a traditional ghost story. The reason you find it to be "total shit" is because you're used to high-action, fast paced movies designed for people with the attention span of a hummingbird on speed.

Ringu is well paced, doesn't use "shock" scares like the american remake, and has much better use of a score than the american remake, which relied mostly on "Let's show how disturbing we can make things look!" and "Let's put a loud burst of orchestra right here to make people jump!"

That said, the american one is a better movie, but the original is in no way "total shit".

ringu = original korean version
ring 0 birthday, ring 1, ring 2 = japanese remakes
the ring = american remake

i haven't seen ringu, but the japanese version is a quite awesome, psychic horror movie, and I'm quite sure a lot more disturbing than the american remake.

*sigh* I just went through this on a horror message board (And as a result got sent a screenplay idea for Ring 2 because people thought I was involved in the production and scripting of the movie.)

It's a trillogy of JAPANESE novels. Ring, Rasen, and Loop by author Suzuki Koji. A fourth book, Birthday, is a series of short stories that includes "Lemonheart," the basis for the movie Ring 0.

ring: kanzenban was a japanese TV movie that came out in 1995

Ringu came out in 1998

Rasen came out in 1998. Asmik Ace Entertainment hired two separate crews to produce Ring and its sequel Rasen, and then released both films simultaneously. The thinking was that if audiences enjoyed one movie, they would watch the other to see how the stories interconnected. Whereas people flocked to see its predecessor, however, Rasen quickly faded from the limelight to become the black sheep of the Ring series.

Ring Virus was the first movie ever produced in cooperation between Korea and Japan, each side footing half the bill. Ring Virus is a remake of the japanese film with more elements of the novel thrown in

*Added info I forgon on first posting*

Ring Virus got a Korean theatrical release and was produced in 1999, making it come AFTER the 1998 release of Ringu. RV is almost like that remake of Psycho that came out a few years ago. It's nearly shot for shot recreation of Ringu, but changed enough so that it's almost COMPLETELY impossible to understand.

*end of added info*

ring: saishuushou was a 12 episode Japanese TV serries that came out in 1999

rasen: the series was 13 episodes and came out in 1999 also.

Ring 2 came out in 2000 People hated Rasen but wanted more of the Ring story, so Ring 2 was made and pretends that Rasen never happened.

Ring 0: Birthday came out in 2000 and is the "origin" of Sadako (Samara to the american remake)

The movies Ring and Rasen were adaptations of the novels, Ring 2 was an original story by director Nakata Hideo and screenwriter Takahashi Hiroshi, and portrayed events wildly different from those of the books.

And no, Ringu is FAR from disturbing. The only thing that's better about Ringu than the american remake is "The Scene" at the end. In the american, it's CG crap and keeps cutting back to scenes of the "mother" driving to the ex's place and completely kills the shock effect. Plus, they don't do the whole thing with "The eye". :)

Good luck finding them. Ringu just got released along with The Ring (american remake) but other than that, they're nearly impossible to find if your not in europe.

Personally, I watched the original first, then I watched the american remake, and the american one blew the original out of the water on a lot of diffrent aspects. It's got a lot of diffrent stuff from one to the other, and they've both got a style to them. But if your looking for something completely creepy as all hell, the american one is the way to go. If you feel more like watching a mystery with aspects of a ghost story, then watch Ringu.

That was one big problem everyone had with the american one. I'm not gonna ruin it for people who haven't seen it yet, but "The Scene" at the end is the only thing that I found a LOT better about the original than the remake. It's not touched with computers at ALL and it honestly looks like it's really happening. Also, it doesn't cut away every 4 seconds to something else, so the whole scene really has time to "sink in" and scare you, whereas the remake was just like, "Oh! Shit! That's.. Hey! Go back to the TV! Ok, good! Wow, this is so.. ah FUCK! Go back to his place!!"

maybe I could use some video editing stuff and add the original scene in to the movie... :P

you may ask......
i didnt see the US remake so for that one i cant vouch but the korean one, ringu, was shitty for me mainly based on the whole premise, and i heard the US one was basically the same so.....i found it a far fetched idea for a scary flick. plus it wasnt even scary. plus there wasnt enough gore. gore is good.
