I find it gets monotonous unless people get creative with how they mix it.

baaaaaasss in the bellyyyyyyyyyyyyy :)
i just ran out of legs last week, dancing hard on dubstep for hours... (ok there was skream, but anyway, not the first time it happened to me)

i think it's heavier than breaks, although both have the same tempo (but the rhythm is twice faster in breaks)

with dubstep you can feel each beat so much that you can dance like crazy :)
I'm feeling phd powa !!! right now..

but that's it.I feel like if dubstep is the minimal of break. As i don't really like minimal electro eighter, maybe it's just me who's crazy haha

hehe I didn't like dubstep much, either.. it's still a new style, so there's a lot of room for it to grow, and like anything there's good and bad.. but since it's still young, there isn't as much selection available..

Personaly, my favorite part is the bass. With minimal beats, you have a lot more frequency space for the bass to really blast out.

dubstep is pretty big... i mean a part from the part that its a half-step beat around 140-145 with shitloads of bass, there are no rules involved yet (or so it seems)... so between... say, pinch or martyn and say, skream or rusko, there is a world of difference

if you compare this

to this

now my point is, yeah some of the stuff is really ambient-ish, more "salon" (as i like to call it) sound and for some reason the more "maistream" or anyways the stuff that gets alot of exposure here in montreal is the more "salon" stuff probably because of the love of this city for minimalism (ex.: martyn and kode 9 at piknik for mutek, burial getting huge exposure).

Now im not saying that i dont like the more downbeat or relaxed stuff in fact, I think a lot of the stuff is really top notch production-wise but I do think it kinda sucks that alot of people are turned off by dubstep because they dont have the chance to hear the full spectrum of it... I think at some point it is gonna be important to break-down dubstep into different catergories (but then again i personaly am a freak with labeling my music with names of different styles so i can easily discover more of what i like in something)

just to show you how wide the possibilities are if you take the sub soldier and dub police stuff you've got some nasty gangster-ish stuff that'll sometimes go into a more breaksy mood... if you take this track here there is even a kind of... epic ravy sound about the track.

Now you also got stuff that's still closer to the grimey side of things, if you take joker's stuff you can easily imagine skepta of JME going nutz on a track like that.

If you look at what hyperdub has been releasing in the past couple of months you've got a couple of tracks that are very 8-bit oriented

You've even got stuff that... noisy almost hard-core and sometimes even breakcore influenced with vex'd and some stuff on hot flush record

There is also some stuff that gets influence from more techno 4/4 sound like in TRG's your friends like techno (unfortunatly i dont have a sample for that)

Some stuff is more roots dub oriented with some reggae influence... not the stuff i dig personaly though so i cant really give refferences for it

and there is plenty more stuff to hear and to be made with this sound... i played a set like two-three weeks ago mixing psytrance with dubstep and really layering the stuff together... anyways, my point is... no rules is fun and thats whats so cool about dubstep, there are no stereotypes there are no conventions... you can mix dubstep like it was breaks or jungle and really sling those tracks fast as fuck (caspa two weeks ago showed us the extreme extent of that id say) or you can blend the stuff and go for long techno-styled mixes (like on genius's mix on rinse [ www.boomkat.com ]

and yes... its important to get hit by dubstep in big big big bassy sound... fucking sound therapy if you ask me
I'm feeling sinus right now..
