Vancouver’s Andrew Spence a.k.a. the DJ formerly known a “Slim” is one of Canada’s pioneers of “Break-beat” music. With what’s quickly approaching the 2 decade mark in terms of turntable expertise, Spence has developed his reputation by bridging gaps between the sounds of hip-hop, funk and electronica by incorporating turntablist elements and a live saxophone into his performances. With a growing reputation as one of Vancouver’s hottest saxophone stars touring with various funk outfits such as Vancouver’s 12 piece funk machine Five Alarm Funk, Andrew is no stranger to the stage nor the studio. Spence has released tracks on Purephunk Recordings and is currently producing under the name “Sine-Circle”. His funky soulful sax works have also been featured on tracks by the likes of Jay Tripwire as well as various appearances on u.k. break-beat legend Rennie Pilgem’s full length album “Pilgremage” (Thursday Club Recordings 2004). There is no doubt that when it comes to tuntablistic “hornographic” break-beat performances nobody does it better. Spence has performed all over the world from his British Columbia hometown all the way to London England and will currently be touching down with his “Saxxin’ Scratchin’, Body Snatchin’” performance in Montreal at Saphir’s infamous Mix Thursdays alongside Montreal’s D.M.C. champion DJ Mana as well as DJ’s Somsay and Murdock for Murdock’s birthday bash on June 7th.
