well, what else do you expect from people who are used to DJs that play burned CDs of shit they download off soulseek instead of actually investing in their "art". They may have the skills, but they don't actually invest in something, so it's easier to convince/book a whole bunch of psytrance djs that just spend 20$ on a spindle of CDs to play for free than people who are actually dedicated to what they do and re-invest in the people who's music they play.
I'm feeling craptacular right now..

haha this is funny. If you're afraid of djs stealin your gigs by playing for free then you don't have enough talent/draw to be demanding money in the first place.
I'm feeling harder dec 16th right now..

a'int a question of other free-jays stealin gigs.
its a question of principle.
The dentist a'int gonna fix your teeth for free
Mechanic a'int gonna fix your ride for free
Why should we be asked to rinse out for free?

It's not really affraid of them stealing gigs, so much as it is promoters who book people who don't pay for their music to play for free and then don't book others because they actually expect to be payed at least a little. Vinyl doesn't cost love and happyness, and maybe the people with the tallent aren't being given the chances or bookings they deserve because they won't stand for that shit.

I'd like to know who voted this thread as "Trash". This is definitely an issue that faces all djs and I'd personally like to know what other local montreal djs hafta say about it.

I think promoters in montreal are happy to have so many freaken locals lineup to play at their party. Montreal is flooding with local talent... I see A LOT of MTL folks that know their own respective shit. No??

Also, I believe that djs shouldn't ask for money as they start off. The trick is to get the timing right and not get somehow trapped into a loop which haves you saying "yes, I'll pay for free" everytime you get a booking. I admit, it's easy and tempting to say when all you wanna do is hear your tracks on a (hopefully) crazy soundsystem rocking it out (with ur cock out... automatisme).

Big FU to all you soulseek hoes... You're killing the only thing you (supposedly) love.
Anyways, funny thing that everyone seems to forget is that most of the dj fees go directly back into the music.

I think good DJ's should be payed but nothing exhorbedant... They are more important than the deco at a party though. So there should be a bigger investement into them, than the deco for example... not saying I don't like deco, but music is really the reason for raves.
I'm feeling home again right now..

I deffinitley agree with this. Granted, yes I occasionally spin tunes that I've downloaded off soulseek, but all the tunes that I play out that are downloaded illegaly, it's because

1: it's never coming out (I've still got the "hacker" mentality that all information should be free, and doubly so for music) if you create something that you don't want anyone else but you to play out, keep it for yourself and don't give it to ANYONE. As soon as one other person has it and you aren't planning on releasing it at all, I call bullshit)

2: It's out on promo, but how easy is it to get the promos here? We've got *1* record shop that has DnB, and all things considered, Montreal isn't really "significant" if compared to TO or NZ or Australia or the UK when it comes to our DnB scene. If we're lucky, we'll get 1 copy, which isn't even gonna make it to the shelves. If I download it and play it, I have every intention of buying it when it comes out and is available to me.

and 3: It's been out of pressing/distribution for so long that it's impossible to find anywhere, and as a result, playing an MP3 version of it is not going to harm the sales of the tune, as the only way I'd have to get it would be to buy it off someone else, and that money is not going to the artists anyways.
I'm feeling craptacular right now..

well in case you didnt see it in the e-high thread, copied and pasted for you reading pleasures:

"just cause Psychadelica DJ's dont get dick doesnt mean we have to take that shit, we actually play on turnatables and have RECORD costs, REAL disc Jokcey TALENT, not some mp3 slanging hippy that wants to take ppl on free musical journeys......and the comment about Dj Bind veing nobody, uhh I think thats the other way around...seeing how you dont have enough friends to help you pay the talent YOU HIRES for you party, ass...."PLUR" and "Healthy Scene" doesnt get our gear back home safely with a cheeseburger on our plate...and we arent talking hundreds here, were talking enough to get our respect and move on to next year, you think that ever gonna happen again? LOL Enjoy going to parties where all you hear is trainwrecks from now on then...because you dont want to pay ACTUAL good DJ's...ps I KNOW there is some kind of consiparcy behind this so called event...I'm just to angry to talk abut it right now..."

oh fucking come on! I play psy and yes i do burn some records... basically those I dont find in stores! I'll buy a record even if I've already played it out while I had it burned... as for the talent thing, that's to be discussed in that other thread so wtv

Now about the money thing... now, I mean... for fucks sake just dont accept a gig if you know you know you're not getting paid... if the promoter promised cash and is not dishing out what he promised then yeah he is definatly wrong.

playing for free means losing money (considering all costs which are, gear and records and lifts)... it means the dj is paying to be there... now in return the said dj might get some exposure but otherwise I'd say the dj'd be doing a favor to the promter. Djing costs are pretty high... I mean to be relatively up to date I try to buy maybe two albums or compilations so thats a good 40 bucks every week... so if I only get a gig every month... thats like 160$ spent per gig... I think I would get my ass laughed at if I was to ask for that much... Paying a dj means he's gonna be able to buy more records (and copy less) means the records companies'll be able to put out more artists and distribute em better... maybe sign some more people... maybe we could start a stable psy label in montreal... bigger parties, more paying bookings for djs... a dollar given to a dj is a dollar invested into the scene

the first person that has to take a risk in this cycle is the promoter and yes promoting is very fucking hard work (errr yes i know what its like promoting... sysmyk storm anyone?) and granted, we also need parties that are just fucking parties... we get a room, we drink, we play tracks... we celebrate fucking christmas! just fucking party to party, no risks, no cash no fucking stress just party... anyways... gosh I need a drink!
I'm feeling a storm brewing right now..

Dude, why would you do something stupid like that> That was a completely different thread. wtf!

and Ryan, I dont feel showed up by anyone that plays for free, because theres a REASON they dont get fucking payed...ppl only want to entertain themselves these days, promoters think theyre sufficient enough to throw parties for themselves and their ELITE groups of friends. I KNOW when I hear a good set and if the Dj deserves to get payed or not buddy, and theres just something about booking a Dj that cant beatmatch just cause he plays for free, really pisses me the fuck off...it's like making amature porn and thinking that its Vivid Material, so fucking bad and especially unfullfilling...so fine...take away from the professionalism and be a bunch of unprofessional Dj's! Big up!

NOT!
Update » greatjob wrote on Wed Dec 27, 2006 @ 11:09pm
PS! Half the gigs I've played I was not payed for...times have to change eventually...especially if we produce on our too, that's a reason to get payed in my opinion...Encouraging new Dj's is FINE! But they have to perfect their craft before showcasing anything...they cant be lead into a fairy tale book that can get closed on them and smush them like a bug...happens all the time, now THATS discouraging....am I right?

yes! :p
i can understand your point though, how the 'job' of being a dj is slowly 'coming apart' because of this.
but... i don't have nothing to say for that. the world is as it is and we'd better play with it. i plan on being a dj eventually, slowly i am getting into that groove, but i know i'd be one to play for very low costs. not because i won't be professionnal, but just because i'll have another job anyways, and dj-ing is just the side-thing, the passion, the thing that it doesn't matter how much i spend because it is what i like.
anyways, good thread, very actual...
and what about fundraiser parties?

Fundraiser parties are pretty understood that the DJs are playing for free and that the money is going to whatever cause. And at that, I've actually heard another DJ once who had played at a fundraiser talking to someone on the phone about how he was pissed off that no one had even offered him 20$ to take a cab home, when he lived practically around the corner.

meh... had a similar point to make in this thread but was to lazy to rewrite it in another tone and take out what was specifically for the other thread... anyways I guess you guys get the point... now that I relise that you've probably all been in the other thread already anyways... *sigh*

errrr same here... problem is, that the unbuyable part accounts to around 70% of what I spin unfortunatly...
