I have recently come across a very tempting opportunity in the form of a cheap-close-to-downtown loft that might prove to be perfect for studio space. At roughly 600$, I want to get three or four people together to build, maintain and dominate the montreal music scene with a brand new studio that we would be building. There are basically two big rooms, a small kitchen and a bathroom. The price is RIGHT and the location is killer.
[ maps.google.com ]
it's a 6 minute walk from Papineau metro, with restaurants, a grocery store, gas station and everything you need within 5 minutes of walking.

I already have a good computer, awesome sound card and great software and some hardware to add. Let me know if you are interested and we'll discuss this more.
I'm feeling sexy time right now..

what floor is it on?

you might also wanna look into insurance before hand...

many companys won't insure musical gear on the plateau or in the village...

and if you building a real studio you want insurance!!
I'm feeling hungover right now..

ohh sorry mike.. im not building a studio, im looking for a place to live because my new job is in the city and i don't really want to deal with buses from the shore anymore.. I'll have MY studio obviously but i wasn't expecting to live in a studio where i'd have to share with someone else..

well nothing is out of the question.
Clown, I could invest a bit, making your rent cheaper IF that is an option. That is if you don't want anybody you don't know there, we'll talk.

We all need a place like this and keeping it to ourselves is somewhat unrealistic at this stage for some. That's why I'd love to collaborate on building a kick ass studio that we could really get things done in. Respect would be the name of the studio and it would be the first and only rule.

neighbours?
insurance?
insonorisation?

I know your on top of a commerce, but you have neighbours left and right.
Studios are best built in basements.

That sounds like an appartment with a cool PERSONNAL studio space adjacent to the bedroom.
I'm feeling cracktastic right now..

But how much room do you need for a simple studio? One big room should be more than enough to set up something killer. And it'll be cheaper and BETTER if there's more than one person involved. I realize that I am not being specific enough, I am NOT talking about a public studio, to the contrary I would be looking for MAX (maximum) 2 other people to set one up with. These would be SPECIFIC people and obviously there would be very strict rules on coming in and out with people, considering how expensive the equipment is. This would NOT be a party house and I would strongly discourage my 'partners' from even telling many people about where it is because, again, equipment is Fing expensive and I would never leave my stuff somewhere unless I feel it is absolutely 100% safe.
This is a mere opportunity to bring YOUR production to the next level by bringing in talent and equipment you have not had access to. If this works, it will be a place for learning, production and collaboration. Point Finale.
And if someone wants to live in the other room, all the better for keeping everything safe.
If anyone wants to visit the place with me, I will be going to see it on Friday after 5pm. Let me know by PM.
I am hoping that isolation of sound will not be an issue as it is LEGAL to play loud music during the day and just plain RUDE to blast it at night. Besides, I will mention again that this would not a party place so earphones are just as good for most of the creation process with plenty of time during the day to see how powerful your bass is.

And again, it's all just an idea at this point.
I'm feeling feelings right now..

I can't make any commitments, but me and erik needs a good place to jam every couple of weeks, and we could come up with some sort of deal if you want...

just to ask a question... you say it's LEGAL to play loud music during the day. and I know that in Ontario, that is indeed the case up until 11pm in residentially zoned areas. however, upon looking at tenant rights and stuff in Montreal, apparently tenants can complain about the noise you make EVEN during the day!! and you can ultimately get evicted for it! so it seems that there is no legal right to make loud music in Quebec at all if someone wants to complain . :( i hope i am wrong about this , but this is the clear impression that i get from looking at government websites. So that would make soundproofing a total necessity for me!
by the way it is not just the bass compensation and ear fatigue issues that plague headphone mixing.. but it will KILL your ears faster than anything else (other than excessive clubbing!) i now find that i am basically allergic to headphones now (makes my tinnitus come up), which really sucks.. but please take it as a warning to all music lovers that your ears are your most important asset and don't damage them!!!!! get musicians earplugs (er-15s or er-30s) that do a flat frequency response drop of 15 - 20dB when u go to clubs... they work great, the music sounds better and more clear even! any music where the bass is loud enough to FEEL in your body is loud enough to do permanent damage to the little hairs in your cochlea... so earplugs are like condoms... don't go without them!!

Great Movie for sure!

This is for scotty and any one else:
I am going to see the place tomorrow, I will take pictures and find out about neighbors, sound proofing, insurance, locks, doors, ceilings, animals, insects, and appliances. But I am not moving out so this opportunity is most definitely very limited time. If anyone here even wants to rent some studio time once a month; let me know as that will have an impact on my decision. I am not doing this alone and so if no one else says "Yes" than the short answer is no and this won't happen. So far, no one has said yes or even expressed a serious interest in pitching in. (one exception) So think about it and get back to me. I want to have a professional environment that we can make tracks good enough to sell in. If everything goes well, we can start a label and compete with anyone in the world. I have the means, the will and the contacts. All I need is the cooperation.
I'm feeling scruffy right now..

Well it's too bad that no one trusts any one else, but I expected as much. This won't be happening, at least not in the availlable location anymore. If anyone plans on doing something similar in the future, count me in. I have plenty of creative neurons and some very decent equipment to throw into the fold. I also have money!
Looks like I'm on my own for now.

But that's the whole point of having a combined studio, so that you can use more gear than what you own. It goes both ways and obviously there's a 100% degree of personal responsibility. I'm sure a lot of people see it as being taken advantage of, but how is that possible when you are expanding your own studio as well. Sure there are details to be discussed and agreed upon but this is all about a 'serious' studio. Not a public equipment depot. It's all about trust because you'll let someone use all your gear regardless of where it is if you trust them; and if you don't let them use it but you trust them, that's called selfishness.
definition:concerned chiefly or only with yourself and your advantage to the exclusion of others.
Some one who falls under that definition will never share a studio, but consequently will likely never appreciate from any one else either.

Frank: what you have to understand is that you agree in advance to let someone use your gear, so generally you won't be doing much freaking, you'll start jumping and dancing to the beat and then show him how to make a real synth... is'all
