SEKHMET (BASSCAMP, Burlington, VT)

BIO:
Sekhmet, aka Janet Newberry, began playing records as a result of an immediate attraction to the deep, dark and complex sounds of drum and bass. She was swept off the dance floor and landed behind the turntables. Over the past several years, Sekhmet has been refining her intricate style as a DJ. She has played out in Colorado, Montreal, and Boston, and is currently a resident at a monthly called Whiplash in Burlington. Sekhmet enjoys exposing electronic music fans to the organized chaos of the deeper side of drum and bass.

Sekhmet currently holds residencies at Burlington, VT's Whiplash DNB night, as well as on Techno FM. Her DNB show, Ace of Swords, can be heard Thursdays from 12 to 2am [ www.techno.fm ]

Ladyselectah

Ladyselectah BIO
................................................................................................................................ ............
Growing up around some of Bermuda’s top reggae sound systems of the late 80’s and the early nineties it would make sense that Ms. Simmons, AKA Ladyselectah would make a point of collecting all the dancehall gems of that time and bring them to Montreal in time for the new millennium. Mixing roots and conscious reggae, dancehall, dub and ragga, she spans the decades in her choice of sounds culminated over a rich listening and cultural life experience. However, having the opportunity to ingest the early nineties latest dub plates and packed Jamaican pounds are not all she knows. The whole black music platform has been her inspiration also DJing rare funk, soul, nu-jazz, latin and afro-beat to name just a few. Her background as a performing musician with a foundation in classical and jazz led her to a BFA in music and electroacoustics. She brings all this knowledge to the tables after eight years of DJing clubs and special events in Ottawa (with a weekly at The Cave, Kosmic and CKCU 90.1 Radio Carleton contributor) and Montreal; Wednesday nite Blizzarts, Luba Lounge, Lola, ‘Soul on Top’ at Café de Lima, Jessie May Fashion Launch Fall 2003, and too many loft parties. She can now be found with the Nutrition Sound Crew at the new Blue Dog Fridays and is also a regular contributor to the Jazz Euphorium show on CKUT 90.3.

i have to say that the flyer is kind of off-putting for me, you know, "egyptian themed"...
i get that it's because one of the djs stage name is an egyptian word, but i don't think Janet Newberry is Egyptian either, so in both cases it just seems kind of like a case of trying to sell "the exotic other".
I love your work and am going to come to this party like all the others (dance off!), but i can't hand out these flyers because it feels so wrong. Sorry, maybe next time.

hhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm.

well thanks, i actually really appreciate comments and opinions about our flyers, of course we want to know what people think-
i can see how you think its a little much, but of couse we meant nothing by it, just looking for a theme......

anyways, for real, thanks- and yeah you better come dance your ass off OR ELSE!

the "exotic other"...sounds like that's right out of postcolonialism 101 lol

The WOW flyers have been pretty consistent with the kitschy theme, and Liz Taylor dressed up as Cleopatra is right on that motif.
The image, if anything, is ironic.

Portraying an image of Ganesh if one of the DJs had an Indian name might deserve your condemnation, but Ancient Egypt is so dissimilar from today's Egypt, I think it is going a little far to say that the flyer is guilty of exploiting The Far East for ethnocentric interests.

we based the theme on [ that....Ru ] picked out Elizabeth Taylor.....

we were thinking images, themes,-
Not politics or ideas like , "hey lets use the 'exotic other' to sell our night.......

Don't get me wrong, i love Liz!
And really, i know WOW put on great shows and are a really generous, thoughtful crew, and i appreciate your responses, Jasmine. It doesn't feel like you're getting defensive but are interested in the dialogue, as am i. I don't at all mean to come off as a knowitall, but only, like you appear to me, someone interested in good times and a good atmosphere, which for me means deco/theme/music that doesn't feel like it's being appropriated from another culture, or racist or misogynist or homophobic. Despite the fact that modern-day Egyptians no longer build pyramids or live under an empress, i still feel like they're entitled to their history and that that history is still a part of their culture, so it just doesn't feel okay to me to theme a party using bits and pieces of a culture that none of us (i would wager) know a great deal about, which means that we only have access to the elements of that culture that have been exoticized by our own. A white european woman impersonating an Egyptian seems like a good example of that.
Meh, sorry if none of this makes sense. Sometimes trying to be a vigilant anti-racist cracker is confusing and it can feel like i'm tilting at windmills, but i hope you all know it's nothing personal. It was nice seeing you at Saphir last night, Jasmine, sorry we couldn't talk more. And i am pumped about this Wednesday, though i probably won't come as a pharoph or anything. Sometime in the future, though, it would be fun to have a dress-up theme, like feminist superheroines or something. I call Emma Goldman!
