Born in Santiago, Chile, Poontz (aka Cristobal) bounced around Buenos Aires, Quito, New York and D.C. soaking up musical influences for the better part of his early life. Known as Poontz since 1995, he is now based in Montreal, DJing and supporting a wide variety of music he finds interesting: breaks, house, electro, hip hop and even drum n’ bass.

His efforts to keep the scene vital and diverse have resulted in many successful projects.
In 1997 he was co-founder and resident at Tokyo Bar’s Life weekly, which evolved into the popular and long running Bounce Tuesdays. Featuring drum n’ bass and hiphop, these nights played host to prolific guests such as Kenny Ken and Mat the Alien. 2000 saw the formation of Broken Crew following Poontz’s establishment of a weekly night called Broken Wednesdays at the notorious Blue Dog. Broken Crew became a motivating force for the Montreal breaks community, bringing Canadian and international guests to a city that lacked a regular venue to showcase breakbeat music. Over it’s year 5 run, first at Blue Dog, then moving to Saphire and later to Blizzarts’, the Broken weekly events hosted a slew of word class breaks acts, notably Aquasky, DJ Punk Roc, Tipper and Kemek the Dope Computer, while continuing to provide a venue where local breaks Djs could generate interest in the music. In 2004 the group found a home for Broken under the moniker Reset: Breaks at the world-renowned club Stereo. Currently Broken Crew host international breakbeat Artists at the club every second month. In 2001 Poontz showed his appreciation for eclectic sounds and mixing skills when he started Montreal’s first night dedicated to mashups at Blizzarts, Mashup Monday. Poontz also currently plays regularly on Saturday nights at the respected music-oriented cafe Laika.

Solid skills and broad tastes have earned him many invitations to play along side established local and international acts. Poontz has thrown down sets with legends such as DJ Icey, Lee Coombs, Afrika Bambaataa, Tipper, Atomic Hooligan, Mickey Finn and Uberzone. He plays regularly as special guest alongside local heavyweights DR One, The Mole, Jordan Dare, DJ Mana and Sean Kosa.

The upcoming year is already looking very busy for Poontz. His studio time is booked solid; and his Djing schedule is just as full: March 24th this rising star is being acknowledged with a headlining set at Stereo with a original and exclusive tracks up his sleeve.
