MUTEK China
A festival of new sound and technology from Montréal, Canada
March 3 - 12, 2005

The Canadian Embassy in Beijing, in partnership with Tango, [010]productions, and the Beijing Midi School of Music is pleased to welcome the Canadian MUTEK Festival from Montréal to China. Following performances in Beijing, MUTEK China will travel to Chengdu and Shenzhen for further creative exchanges with local Chinese musicians and artists. As a country with a bilingual heritage, Canada is proud to present this unique concert series to Chinese audiences just in advance of March 20th which is “la journée internationale de la Francophonie”; an annual celebration of French language and culture celebrated around the world.

As many already know, Canada is home to over three generations of talented electronic music productions, artists, festivals and labels that have skilfully created a place in electronic music history and secured international interest in a vibrant electronic music scene.

Today the energy and creativity of many Canadian artists is showcased at festivals like MUTEK. Along with Barcelona, San Francisco, Detroit and Berlin, Montréal is regarded as one of the best cities for experimental electronic music. In fact, the MUTEK Festival has become an annual (not to be missed) appointment for artists to demonstrate their creative and performing skills in electronic music, explore new technologies and share experiences with international colleagues.

Canada’s Ambassador to China, Mr. Joseph Caron noted that “after DJ Kid Koala’s success in July 2003, we are delighted to host a number of innovative concerts under the banner of the Embassy’s ‘Arctic Groove Music Series’. The MUTEK China Festival will showcase some of Canada’s most creative musicians.” During the Canadian Prime Minister’s recent visit to Beijing (January 2005), Canada and China signed a new Cultural Agreement to further enhance the already significant cooperation between our two countries.” Ambassador Caron commented that “exchanges like these continue to play an essential role in fostering mutual understanding of our respective cultures, societies and values.”

The MUTEK Festival in China is an unprecedented occasion for Canadian talent as well as local artists to share their expertise with recent developments in electronic music. A group of 9 Canadian artists, including Akufen (Mr. Marc Leclair) and Crackhaus (Mr. Scott Monteith & Mr. Stephen Beaupré), and the festival founder and Director, Mr. Alain Mongeau, will meet and work with the students of the Beijing MIDI School of Music and then join their Chinese counterparts to deliver a series of breathtaking performances at Club Tango on Friday, March 4th and Saturday, March 5th before moving to Chengdu and Shenzhen.

The Canadian Embassy in Beijing, along with the Canadian Consulate in Chongqing and the Canadian Consulate General in Guangzhou would like to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, Air Canada and the corporate members of the Embassy’s Patrons’ Program for their continued support of Canadian cultural performances in China. We also would like to extend our appreciation to our media partners on this event: Xinjing Bao, City Weekend, Radio 774, High Magazine and [ Clubzone.com ]

Background Information on MUTEK Festival [ www.mutek.ca ]

MUTEK - Music, Sound and New Technologies - was founded in Montréal, Canada in 2000 by Mr. Alain Mongeau. This annual festival celebrates digital music, the media arts and presents a multitude of experimental and playful performances. What started as a modest project, organised by electronic music fans and musicians, has evolved into one of the world’s most renowned annual gatherings of its kind.

Last year’s MUTEK Festival in Montréal featured 70 artists from over ten countries with different showcases, panel discussions and workshops, whose main goals were to explore new territories at the intersection of electronic music, sonic creation and digital culture.

MUTEK has expanded beyond the scope of local festival organization and launched large-scale international events and tours in both Mexico and Chile. Smaller affiliated events have already emerged in France, Germany, Spain and the United States. MUTEK China constitutes the first time that the festival will be presented in Asia.

Always pushing the boundaries, MUTEK organizers have expanded their cultural network to include the new MUTEK_REC label, which supports and cultivates the talents of local, like-minded artists and international guests.

Background information on the Arctic Groove Series

Launched in May 2004 by Canada’s Ambassador to China, Mr. Joseph Caron, the Arctic Groove music series is a new cultural promotion initiative of the Embassy’s Public Affairs Programme, which is aimed at promoting innovative Canadian performing artists to younger, influential Chinese audiences, and thereby enhancing greater awareness of Canada’s creative music talents across greater China. Like other cultural activities, the Embassy works closely with Canadian missions across China. The series has so far welcomed scratch DJ Kid Koala, Calgary fiddlers ‘Barrage’ and now MUTEK!

Biographies

Akufen a.k.a Marc Leclair
(Montreal, Canada - Musique Risquée – Perlon – Minus - MUTEK_REC)
Among the Canadian musicians in the MUTEK spotlight, Akufen is the first to have built a widespread reputation on the international scene. Akufen’s inimitable style and mixed composition techniques (computer composition, radio impulse/influx/inspiration, dissected rhythms and tender melodies) caught the attention of renowned labels, such as Perlon, Force Inc., Trapez, Background and Oral, producing a number of releases that catapulted him into the top ranks of the electronic music scene. He has remixed and collaborated with numerous masters, such as Thomas Brinkmann, Herbert, Richie Hawtin, Cabaret Voltaire, Yello, Thomas Dolby, Massive Attack, etc. His most recent record, a mix CD released on the British label Fabric, revealed a well-kept secret: not only is he a remarkable producer but also a very talented DJ!

Crackhaus
(Montreal, Canada - MUTEK_REC - Musique Risquée)
Remarkable craftsmen of rhythm, Scott Monteith (Deadbeat) and Steven Beaupré play with conventions and induce a voluntary touch of kitsch into their compositions. The two musicians share an obvious pleasure of working together by delivering a musical delirium that can be light, playful and tenacious. Their music is an astonishing blend of House and Funk, built on vibrating structures and punctured with ruptures and surprises. CRACKHAUS’s wild performance will literally crack the house!

Scott Monteith a.k.a Deadbeat
(Montreal, Canada – Scape)
Deadbeat is one Scott Monteith, an adopted Montrealer who has been releasing his own special blend of dub-laden, minimal electronics since 1998 for labels such as Cynosure, Intr_version, Revolver and Scape.

Scott Monteith’s past experience working for Applied Acoustics Systems, makers of the Tassman Software Synthesizer, has enabled him to develop new creative interfaces and a strong grasp of some of the most cutting- edge technology in the industry. Whether crafting quirky, not-quite-dance floor techno, or rumbling digital dub, Scott continually strives to create music that honours the past beyond empty tribute or cultural appropriation by infusing the digital tools of the present with a little of the magic spice known as human imperfection.

Steven Beaupré
(Montreal, Canada – Musique Risquée)
Steven Beaupré has been involved in the electronic music scene for more than a decade. Seduced by more substantial rhythms and textures of house and techno music, Steven has been striving for deeper, funkier and more engaging sounds. With a love for gritty punchy music, at once technological and organic, Steven skilfully mixes tracks that rocks the dance floor and always creates an atmosphere of humour and excitement.

EGG
(Montreal, Canada - MUTEK_REC)
Armed with several years of study and research in electro-acoustic music, Guillaume Coutu-Dumont and Julien Roy united their efforts to form EGG in summer 2002 to explore the new and fruitful horizons of electronic music. Their first record Don’t Postpone Joy was released in fall 2003 on the MUTEK_REC label and was considered a breath of fresh air. They have spent the past year fine-tuning their sounds and polishing their performance during various shows in Canada and abroad — they were notable contributors to the MUTEK tours in Mexico, Chile and Europe in 2003–2004. EGG’s music is equal parts glitch, samples and playfulness, which is marked by their very unique brand of cartoon-tech sensibilities.

Skoltz_Kolgen
(Montreal, Canada – MUTEK_REC – Line)
Skoltz_Kolgen is an artist duo who wholly define the word digital, creating a universe that is unique, rich and in perpetual motion. Their visual treatment is spectral and evocative, fully organic as well as digital. Their music, linked symbiotically with their images, is more than a simple statement of inspired minimalism. Their performance FLÜUX :/ TERMINAL is an immersive experience that explores the unconventional possibilities of synchronism and audiovisual stereophony and is a constantly evolving body of work that has been presented in over 10 different countries.

NANALOG
(Montreal, Canada)
Right from the start, the collective Nanalog, composed of active members Gabriel Coutu Dumont, Mathieu St-Arnaud and David Fafard, has been exploring the syncresis of image and sound, playing with representation within space. Whether they create original audiovisuals (Les Collections Modernes, Le Séminaire I et II) or video and scene-design in collaboration with artists from Montreal’s and the international electronic scene, the environments they create can be best described as a fusion of installation, performance and programming.

Alain Mongeau, Artistic Director and Director General of MUTEK
Alain Mongeau founded MUTEK in 2000 and has been its director since. By exploring the intersection between electronic music, sound experimentation and new technologies, MUTEK has imposed itself since its debut as a reference for those who deal with the diffusion and the promotion of electronic music creations in North America.

Between 1997 to 2001 Alain Mongeau was the director of the “new media” section of the Montreal International Festival of New Cinema and New Media (FCMM). Thanks to his involvement, Montreal created itself a reputation as the North American leader in this sector.
Alain was also program chair for ISEA95, the 6th International Symposium of Electronic Arts. This position allowed him to better understand the implications of globalization within the field of numeric creation and artistic networks.

With a PhD in Communications, Alain Mongeau has also taught computer science at the University of Quebec in Montreal between 1990 and 1993. During that period he realised a dozen of new media creations, which were presented at various international festivals.
