What a weekend it was. Maso really pushed it this time when playing with Astro as South Saturn Delta... It started out innocently, with Yamazaki playing guitars and pedals and Astro rocking a MiniMoog, then Maso just jumped off stage, attacking the audience with his guitar and microphone stand (which he both threw across the room), while yelling/convulsing. I'm surprised no one got hurt. His set as Masonna tonight was also electric to say the least... lasted 2m30s, for the record.

Jojo Hiroshige was just powerful... I guess burning incense and performing the solemn way he did do confirm this whole Japanoise/zen connection that's sometimes been mentioned in the press... He just sat between a bass and a guitar lying on the floor, droning away, then started chanting with more and more intensity, until the speakers bled. Sonically similar to a Daniel Menche live.

Crossbred, a female duo, offered something suprisingly focused, and much like the lovely Katsura of Doog, brought a more European touch to the festival, with semi-rhythmic power electronics.

Diode Johnny sitting atop a WALL of Marshall amps - the loudest thing I ever heard, no less. Great alien outfit, too.

Astro was the most subtle of the bunch, quite similar to Space Machine with deep, spacy, bubbly analog electronics (MiniMoog again). Yummy.

The most memorable sight of the event was Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock, dressed like a salaryman, simply standing on stage and bowing while wearing a mask of entrails and other animal parts hanging from his crotch. The soundtrack consisted of a strident high-pitched noise with incomprehensible German schizoform mumblings. A nice humorous way to close a great night.
________

In between both nights I hopped by Docore again, and among other things I heard a guy doing deathmetal vocals over some pretty sick break/speedcore, a live punk-rockabilly band, some great psychedelic guitar improv (w/drums), a DJ mixing some old Earache metal with badass 80's electro (Mark Stewart for example... these Japs just know everything!). By 5 AM I couldn't hear anything anymore and just headed home.

Well, mostly: going to wicked shows, meeting fun peeps (even gaijin who aren't boring) and having a blast! Also recording a bit of music. With any chance I'll get a gig in Kyoto this summer.

That place Docore hosts the coolest free parties every two weeks now, so I guess I'll be there often. You never know what you'll hear.

I also badly want to catch weirdos like [ www.afrirampo.com ] Ultrafuckers and Acid Eater before I leave.

I'm here on a "working holiday" visa, but since I refuse to teach English like a sucka (the only real job available, [ www.jawhm.or.jp ] liars), I'm more idle than I expected... Besides, I seem to get a warmer reception when I tell people I'm not an Eigo sensei... In fact I should make a t-shirt or wear a tag that says "No, I don't fucking teach English".

Still I've got Japanese classes. I came here because I'm majoring in East Asian studies at UdeM... thought it would be stupid to get into that program without ever having experienced the place. So here I am...

that's cool that you don't teach english, those jobs are generally more like "lets hang out with a wacky foreigner", than "lets learn english".

Saw Afrirampo yesterday... loud as fuck (well, I was standing right next to the drumkit) and contagiously energetic. And yes, they're hot.
Opening was a highly impressive 7-piece chaotic jazz band called NISEUO Cosmic-Chang Mothership Progress. They had double bass, trombone, sax, trumpet, keyboards, electronics, drums, motherfuckin' orchestra-sized xylophone, and a really excentric singer with tons of little toys. Too bad they only had a tape for sale.

On Saturday I heard Richard Devine's clone at Docore... actually called Rick, from LA and recording under the nme Xtz.V2 - sick, slick and dirty... noise-step!
Some Aussie rocked a TR606 with loads of distortion, a Zoom sampler the size of an MD and an mp3 player... Good crunchy beats, establishing the Drumatix as the best Roland rhythm box ever (for my money anyway.)
At first I wasn't so sure what she was doing there, but this Gothic Lolita went behind the decks for some furious breakcore. Only in Japan.
A guy going by the name "Donna Summer (not Jason Forrest)" molested a guitar on top of harsh breakbeats and did a fair bit of falling all over the place.
Then for a moment frequent Passenger of Shit collaborator/ex-girlfriend Emily had a go at some screaming/MCing/thrashing about over [ www.discogs.com ] 01, after which the guys at the bar thought it would be funny to point a fire extinguisher at the crowd... The place cleared up pretty fast.
