Rave music : myth or reality ?

I for one think that the music style known as " rave " is absolute bullshit. It's like saying Hip Hop music is in fact called " Black music ".

Rave is an event, a movement and a way of thinking AT BEST, it's NOT a music style.

I don't mean to be music style whore here but personally, despite what [ www.di.fm ] Guide to Electronic Music says, RAVE aka HARDCORE to me is nothing more than OLD SCHOOL BELGIAN TECHNO (not only that, hardcore is a category on there as well as a music style ? WTF ?).

True dat or I'm full of shit ? Discuss. :)

===================================================

Discutez. :)

I know what you mean. But there was a "Rave" music style in Europe back in late 80's early 90's, from Germany and Belgium. It was called RAVE. Today though, people dont get it and call it "rave" cuz they dont know and they are confused into all those electronic music styles that exist, so they simply call it "rave", wich pisses me off too. Its like if people hanging out in bars are listetning to "bar". Yo what kind of music do u like? Uh, I like bar music man... DUH

Yeah, they called it " rave " but it never really wasn't, and they only did because early 90s, the UK started playing what they referred to as " hardcore ".

So, since the producers in Germany and Belgium couldn't call it " hardcore " either ( and they wanted to differenciate themselves from their british counterpart ), they called it " rave " because it was fitting at the time and it was clear what you were getting when you listened to rave.

But even if you'd call a choir " church music ", it really isn't. Just like rave.

Glad to see I'm not the only one annoyed by the lack of knowledge of some people. :)

Nah you're not Pixelized!!! I HATE, I fuckin' hate going into a family party for exemple, and have to explain them what is the music I'm producing (they "know" I'm a "rave" producer), explaining all that shit to my drunken stupid uncle. Fuck that I gave up, and tell them "yeah yeah Fernand, you're right I'm into Rave music"

HAHAHAHAHA ! Yo, try this next time : " yeah, I'm into rave music, mononcle. I use the latest version of Reason and I have about 5 VSTs running at the same time. You see, I have 7 samples looped just for the drums and... "

I promise you, 3 minutes and your uncle won't ever bother you again with your " rave music ".

i'm lucky on this side, everyone in my family knows that music is really strong in us (me and my bother, who is a sick ass hip hop producer) and they really like what we do. But my mom don't understand this "j'comprends pas dom, tu peux faire la plus belle musique du monde pis apres tu peux faire la plus fucké"

c'est moi ca :D

Nice, that's a gift, dude. My mom was the first to freak out and say " heille, je check ça pis c'est vraiment beau comme couleur ! " when I dyed my hair electric blue a few years ago. And she really digs progressive trance ( wasn't expecting her to dig Drum & Bass, really ).

My moms even came to a rave once, all decked out in candy raver gear. My moms the shit, really.

My father doesn't all get it but I got the love of music from him : he's been collecting records since he was 12. So did I. Music's in our blood.

Hey look at me, Im Carlos with my Techno and shit. Oh yeah I love hard-techno PFFFFF!!!!" hahahahaha my dad is the funniest!!!!

Well, you can't expect people who aren't into electronic music to understand it. I remember when I first started listening to it, it took me a while to understand all the subgenres.

Well, the subgenre are even confusing to us, so I can't imagine parents to all get it. You have to actively listen to at least one of them to be able to be aware of all the others.

What I find surprizing is that it's much more easier for me to understand and appreciate old 50s and 60s music that my father grew up with and adores than it is for his for him to understand my music. I guess I'm more open-minded musically than he is. Which kinda sucks but hey, it's to be expected I guess.

Again, our mothers seem more open to these new genres. Heh.

Ac Slater - Rave Music [ www.pitchedup.net ]

Pixelized: I think that your parents are probably missing a couple of years of music evolution to understand today's music. It'll probably be the same with you if you stop discovering new music, you'd lose it, and in a couple of years, you wouldn't understand anything. Well, that's my personnal theory. As my dad understand every music that was made till the 70s. He just doesn't get 80s and 90s music.

Well my mom understands and even likes me. My dad doesn't. But get this : my pops used to have a huge collection of vinyls before, 33 1/3 or 45 rpms. I shit you not, I found in the pile of 45s he's purchased through the years stuff like Donna Summer - I Feel Love, Giorgio Moroder - The Chase and even Softcell - Tainted Love. Hell, one day coming back from a used record store, he gave me a 12inch and he goes " here ya go. I listened to it and I think you might like this " and hands me over the Kraftwerk - Tour De France 12' vinyl. I went nuts as I stood in disbelief at him.

And he has the nerve to say he's get this " electronic music " and he dislikes it ? I'm sorry, I'm not convinced. I think he's too proud to admit that he loves SOME of it.

But I like your theory nonetheless Le D. It makes a lot of sense.

Well, it depends on the people also, that's for sure. Someone who really likes music, not a specific style but music in general, will probably be able to appreciate anything, given the time to listen to it.
