everyone one I know who has moved to bc has come back compeltly empty, emotional, mentally, it seems to have really fucked up a lot of friends/family.

mind you, a lot of them were smoking ice outta lightbulbs 24/7.

its also pretty expensive to live, eat, insurance etc etc.

I never saw what the "draw" was, I suppose the scenary is nice :)

whoa... sounds expensive.
I know I won't be doing too many drugs, in fact I was kind of thinking of leaving Montreal because all my friends here are druggies, and I love them but I need a purer life (stop laughing!). But do you(yes you!) think that I could go there mostly empty handed and find a job and get a place without any serious problems? I've heard it's a beautiful area and quite wealthy. I have nothing against poverty but would love to step on up in society and start a business in a booming area. Is Vancouver a bad choice for that!?

I really appreciate the responses so far btw... feel free to make this a 'BC' thread in general.

i was there last summer i really enjoyed it,

the economy is booming there due to all the asian investment

nice to be by the ocean and the mountains all at once

cheap sea food and sushi

mostly nice weather all year round

easy to take trips down south (washington, Cali, even Mexico)

the people are mostly pretty nice too

i'd like to do the same as you maybe sometime next year, you know clean up my life style (stop drinking and smoking so much)

if you want to move somewere to open a business, I suggest researching the best place/market for what you want to do, compare living costs, your business expenses and all that stuff, and choose where you want to live logistically. thats just my opinion though,

of course anywere you live is what you make of it, and im not anti bc or anything, Its just that ive seen far to many brilliant minds return from the island completly braindead.

some o my friends moved out there like..a year ago... and they say they like it, but always cme back to montreal to party.. i guess vancouver is more of a retirement place... (not that there arent good parties.. i just hear it doesnt compare to montreal..it's something completely different)

the friend works with kids who have down syndrome... like he just chills with them... and his gf does something else.. i dno, it cant be too hard to find a job...they found those jobs within a month of being there, so i guess.. i shouldnt be hard.

my 7 cents.

as for drugs, i hear theyre cheaper there...so... yeah. how pure you are is up to you.

Hey thanks a lot, this is actually really good information! I know that I want to see the place at the very least.

I guess I am just going through one of those "Am I really in the right place?" phases.. It's funny though because I've never been through one before now. I've always lived in Montreal and it's all I know so I feel like I need to see what's out there! I am also inspired by the warmer weather and new life springing up everywhere, so the fact that it is generally warm in Vancouver is definitely a plus.
Basdini: about cleaning up I did it because I decided I DON'T LIKE getting wrecked anymore, I always wake up the next day and wish I hadn't. I have no regrets but I KNOW a sober/aware life is the best way to experience the time God gave me (hehe... god.)
Alcohol and weed (I love them so!) are all about pushing life aside, about forgetting about reality and I'll be doing THAT for billions of eons once I die! Anyway, what do I know?

Well, if it's any indication, all my friends who moved to BC ended up moving back here after a few years. Apparently, if you like canesta, indian and asian food, it's the place to be. Like Lushys, all of them came back behaving like 40 year olds.

A lot of us have gone through your phase though and going to Vancouver will only entertain you for a period but invariably, your parents and close friends are all here. And it's pretty damn easy to start missing them a few weeks into being over there. I can only advise you to find new friends who don't take 5 Es, 4 bumps of K, 2 vials of GHB and 4 grams of weed on any given saturday night.

Yes, it IS possible to find such people. Hell, a lot of us here got out of the E-tard K-hole.

Weeeeeeeeell, I can't speak for everyone though.

The nightlife in Vancouver is absolute crap. I mean there are some happening bars and clubs, but you walk out on the street in the middle of downtown on a friday or saturday night and you`ll be lucky to see anyone. In Montreal just being outside at night and watching all the people is a trip. The people there are cooler then the people form Ontario or the prairies but not as cool as here. The weed being better in B.C is a myth. None of the weed i got there was impressive at all. I had to pay 40$ for a 3.5 just to not get absolute shag, and even then it really wasnt that good. Of course it all depends on contacts and everything but the fucked up thing is that all the Vancouver people were talking about how this weed was like the best shit around, and when I told people it was shit it was just absolute baffledness from everyone around, as if I was an alien psycho. I got some good weed in Tofino but it still wasn`t as good as what I get here. I`m sure they got better stuff I dont knwo about though, but you`d probably be better off looking for that same stuff here. They have fields and fields of shwag. Maybe its more organic or some shit, but other then that bleh.
You`ll enjoy being able to smoke a joint wherever th fuck you please, as well as the pot cafe`s. You`ll very much enjoy the scenery, especially off the coast of vancouver island. The vancouver sky-train just rocks. We sshoudl have sky trains everywhere.

Oh plus 99% of the time you can get into the sky train for free, except at one or two stations. They don`t have cards to swipe through or guys to collect money and tickets, they just have security guards who will randomly show up and randomly ask you for your pass. I never paid once to travel around the city.

Hey man, I know how you feel about the need to escape the cluthches of feeling purposeless and stagnant. It would seem the condition in this city is more common than I thought.

All I can say is that I did the same shit when I left for Alberta randomly before Christmas -just to get away from the drugs and also to get my act togther, and honestly it was one of the best experiences in my life!

...not to say that it really helped in the end, but that's just me.

I was to young to really tell you anything about Vancoucer when I went, but if you need to get away -whether it be from drugs, poisonous realationships, expanind your education or yearning for a new experence in general (if that is the case, of course)... Go for it.

Let me just say as a friend, that you keep in mind why your there and remember that you will always have friends and home here in Montreal.

Hope that helps encouraging you in whatever it is you want.

Are you planning on going with Laramie?
We were chatting about it drunkenly one night, and she mentioned going to BC. I interjected that perhaps -since I was thinking about moving to Alberta, that we could all road trip it togther, if the chips fall in all the right places.
What do you think?

I think I just need a physical and mental vacation. I do love Montreal but, and some will disagree, but I am anglo and sometimes I feel SO disciminated against. Some francophones really look at you like you're a frikin handicapped and it's that kind of closed-minded snobbish attitude that I want to nuke... or just escape

Wait, that wasn't about BC at all. Anyway I suppose it's ALWAYS good to ask yourself questions even though most of the time the answers never come back the way you wanted. So regardless of where I might go, or not, the option alone is comforting.
I also have an opportunity to go to South America but everything my friend mentions about the place has something to do with COKE, which I seriously DON'T need any of (as fun as that might be I'd become moronic in no time). I thought if I stopped drugs I wouldn't be confused anymore but I am starting to think that confusion is what we are. Hell if we knew everything THEN what's the point of living!? This whole thread has become very philosophical for me and BC is my metaphor. So far it sounds like I should definitely visit the place... but to live there wouldn't change how I think, just where I think.
I guess I won't know till I've tried it, but I took that same route with drugs and where has THAT gotten me?... (the answer is of course that it has gotten me here on ravewave discussing BC)
I am glad most people have something both good and bad to say about it, do you guys think that it matters more where you live or what you're doing with your life?

Are you only interested in visiting Vancouver, or different places?

If you are interested in nature, skiing/snowboarding, etc. then it's amazing for that, in many places around BC.

If u want big city, Vancouver is great but it depends what you're looking for. It does rain alot in winter. There is a HUGE Asian culture there. The nightlife, in comparison to here, sucks. They have raves and stuff but its nothing like here. but then if u r trying to avoid drugs maybe you should stay away from that cuz there's a lot of crystal in Van (oh, and of course, smack).
I have found the weed in BC way better and stronger and cheaper than any i found here but i lived in the rockies, not in Van, so i dunno.
The culture of BC is similar to Quebec in that its pretty liberal compared to other provinces. Vancouver shares a lot of west coast culture like california... lots of yuppies there into yoga and stuff like that. lots of people live there who are into outdoor sports. and yes, its more expensive to live there but if u look around and share apartments u can do ok. in smaller cities in BC its cheaper to live.
Every block in Van has 2 Starbucks and a sushi joint on it. THere are also some pot cafes where people openly smoke up over coffee and snacks that aren't harassed by cops cuz the cops are busy taking care of the east side which is full of heroin addicts (stay away from the east side!)

plan to visit, and if u meet the right people a good oppurtunity could arise and u might wanna stick around.

hope that helps.

I heard there are good job oppurtunities there if you are workign in the computer field.

It`s funny there`s this one dealer, who lives above amsterdamn cafe, a weed cafe, and you just walk in his front door which is always wide open, walk into this other room and the guy is sitting there with a box full of cash, boxes full of weed, and 10 body-guards. Not only that but he has a sign. Any cop can just walk in any time. I don`t think the issue is that the cops are too busy, cause they know about the cafe`s and all this stuff, if they wanted to they would shut them down in a second. Pot is basically legal there even if it isn`t officially. I guess on oen hand the H problems are so bad that it woudl be almost inhumane to pick on the pot smokers and I`m sure there would be some kind of unheaval and on the other hand, just think of Amsterdamn, it`s good business. Pot brings the tourists in. I get the feeling it would be a completely ridiculous thing for a cop to say shit about weed around there, it`s just somethign you don`t do.
