I want to get one for my laptop, with USB and firewire ports. There seem to be 10000000 brands to choose from.. The lacie ones look nice but pretty expensive. Buying an enclosure and then putting in my own drive seems to be the cheaper route but I have heard some of those are pretty weak and I'd like something at least portable enough to be lugged around in my backpack once in a while but also needs to be fast enough to do audio mixing...

Anyone have any suggestions ? I dont want to spend more than 300$ including tax

don't ever buy a USB hard drive, that'd be the biggest mistake of your life.

if you wanna be real cheap, get a shoebox, a SATA drive and a long sata cable.. done and done..!

I'd be using it with firewire, firewire is much better...

I was thinking of getting a sata drive but sata cardbus cards are pretty expensive (this is for a laptop). Plus I heard many enclosures where you add your own drive are pretty flimsy...

Has anyone tried the kingwin enclosures? They make some that have usb, firewire, and sata.. which is a versatile amount of connections.

why buy a fire wire 800 drive when your labtop doesn't run that shit?

I'd use it with the normal firewire connector then when I get a firewire800 card it will run even faster... I'm planning on getting a cardbus card with more firewire ports anyway (there are several models with have a mix of 400 and 800 ports)... The only computers that have fw800 built in right now are the 15 an 17 inch powerbooks and the g5 powermacs. Really really benefit from 800 if you buy another drive and run them in a raid configuration

Excuse my ignorance... But I need to know exactly what this Firewire is, and why it's so bad to use a USB connector for an External HD.

I need one myself for packing video files on the go.

USB was not designed for high speed transfer. even USB 2.0 can't go that fast.

Firewire was designed for digital video/audio, which is why all digital videocams have firewire.. 5 minutes of NTSC is 1gig.. :P

yeah firewire is pretty hype, that's why firewire soundcards are ussually a lot better than usb ones...

even firewire 400 (which is the old version, firewire 800 is the new standard) is faster than USB 2.0..

Firewire 800 is close to 4 times faster than USB 2.0

firewire was designed for media drives where latency was important..

USB and USB 2.0 were designed for digital cameras, printers and keyboards.. so getting a USB hard drive is retarded.

it flies when it's connected with firewire800, not nearly as fast with usb 2.0 (no doubt), but it's good to have the option because right now I am transfering 14gigs to my pc which doesn't have firewire.
