Very massive week, lots of very big titles, time to look reach for the kraft dinner again.

[DRUM & BASS]

Marcus Intalex – Zumbar/Temperance on Soul:r.
After partners in crime Calibre & ST Files scored big with ‘Red Light’ & ‘Little Man’, Marcus steps up on a solo tip to show everyone how it’s done. ‘Zumbar’ at first listen may seem like a simple bouncy tune, but after sitting down and giving it a good once over I heard much much more…ACIEEEED! Always on the pulse of things, Marcus grabs a simple melody and twists it up throughout the track to expose wicked layers of funk, this tune literally churns the dancefloor into a frenzy. As if that wasn’t enough, ‘Temperance’ smoothes things out and brings things even deeper with filtered amens alongside a smooth almost harp-like guitar rhythm. Add to that a classic vocal sample from MI7’s ‘Rocking Down The House’ and you’ve got a 2-sided weapon so versatile it’s intimidating.

Noisia/Kiko, Mayhem & Mecha – Vanishing Point/Echelon on Shadow Law.
Think you know all there is to know about neurofunk eh? Think you’re on top of your game? Have you got this one then? What’s that? You don’t? Time to get it together man, Noisia come correct with a BAD attitude on this one, imagine if Pendulum and Corrupt Souls met in a dark alley and got radioactive slime poured all over them…the resulting entity would be ’Vanishing Point’. Meanwhile on the flip, our favorite Atlanta native Mayhem joins forces with New York’s Kiko and MC Mecha to bring this twelve to even darker depths, haunting synths and mechanical growls help drive home the point that Shadow Law is a label to watch.

Calibre – Bluetop/Gemini on Innerground.
The production machine that is Calibre doesn’t know the meaning of ‘take a break’, this time lending his talents to Marky & XRS’s Innerground. Calibre fuses his dub-style flavor of the moment with a latin vibe on both sides for this one, lightening things up a little while still keeping it dancefloor friendly. ‘Bluetop’ takes the steppy route while ‘Gemini’ rinses the amen. Sweet.

Sonic – Dr.Sonic/Eraserhead on Science Fiction.
The doctor’s in the house! One of my favorite tunes right now, Sonic grabs a cheeky sample from the theme song of the classic british tv show Dr.Who. Add to that some rolling heavy drums and thundering bass and you’ve an instant dancefloor…just add junglists! ‘Eraserhead’ rocks out on a disco tip, with a nice tech-step synth line rising throughout, tight. Once again Sonic shows he’s one of the most multi-talented producers out there.

Aphrodite – Original Nuttah VIP on Aphro Dubs.
The king of jump-up returns with 2 hot one-sided singles for the raver massive. First up is his take on Shy FX’s ‘Original Nuttah’, one of the most classic jungle tunes of all time. Aphrodite spares no expense, grabbing UK Appache to bust out some brand new custom lyrics to reinvigorate this bomb. After a blazin’ intro, Aphro lets the original vocal run it’s course and drops the hammer with his trademark bassline, just try to stop your head from nodding!

Aphrodite – Ready Or Not VIP on Aphro Dubs.
The Fugees changed the face of hip hop with this tune, and Zinc changed jungle with his classic bootleg remix, now it’s Aphro’s turn. Using even more of the original vocal and redoing Zinc’s bassline with his trademark sound, what else is missing? You guessed it, ‘Killing Me Softly’ makes a surprise appearance at the second drop, and so does the hotter then hot sitar sample, can you say rewind? REEEEEEEEEWIND!

David Carbone & Kubiks – Frisco Disco/My Thing on Industry.
Carbone had definitely matured as a producer, his most recent productions have really hit the spot. Its no wonder Industry is releasing everything of his they can get their hands on. Both of these tunes are on the jazzy flavor, but don’t take that to mean boring, it just means cool. To be honest, I can’t decide which one I like more, so you’re going to have to do the choosing.

Photek & Fabio/Photek – No Joke/Baltimore on Photek Productions.
Fabio steps out form behind the decks and hops in the studio for a rare production appearance, alongside Photek, how could he go wrong? Not bad, but I must say that this still sounds like it’s all Photek here. Funky slap-bass with heavy steppy drums reminiscent of ‘We Got Heat’ leave a lasting impression, while the flip shows Photek at his meanest, with mentasms and eerie synths lurking at every corner. A nice contrast of styles for this release, stay on the lookout for Babylon VIP and Rinsa coming soon on Photek’s new label, TEKDBZ.

Impulse & Mecha – Sex Station/Future Fear on N:Vision.
‘Sex Station’ rocks the floor with some hot ladies keeping your attention as they moan their way into the back of your skull. Very tasty. And it seemed as though ‘Future Fear’ was never going to see vinyl, thank god it still sounds as fresh as the day it was born. Harking back to the days of Audio Blueprint, it’s only appropriate that Skynet brings us these two neurofunk destroyers.

Panacea – Winternights/Relight The Fire Tonight on Position Chrome.
What the fuck?!!?!? I know that’s what you’re all thinking, that and: “How can I get down to DNA before this record sells out?”. Do yourself a favor and check under your couch cushions for spare change, you’re going to need it biatch! Panacea’s still got the touch, and you know what that means, screaming vocals and killer drops, and oh yes he’s evolved, a little shuffle action to boot. Someone’s going to have to throw a DAMN big rave for this shit to get dropped, or else we’re all fucked.

Ed Rush & Optical – Bacteria (Pendulum RMX)/Gas Mask RMX on Virus.
If you haven’t heard either of these tune’s yet you must be living on a desert island, and these days, even desert island’s have high speed internet, so what’s your excuse mofo? This could very well be the biggest tune to ever have been released on the mighty Virus. Pendulum take on the difficult task of trying to make an Ed Rush & Optical tune sound better then it already is…no problem! Simply strip it down and build it right back up again from scratch, and don’t forget the reese basslines! The boys update their own ‘Gas Mask’ on the flip, somehow making it even heavier, can you say mammoth?

Break – The Compass/Locked In on Explicit.
Don’t ask me why this record to so long to come in. People have been biting my head off for it (Hi G!), believe me it was worth the wait. Break is one of those guys everyone wants to work with right now. With tunes out on East Side, DNAudio, Commercial Suicide, Critical and Quarantine, what’s one more label? ‘The Compass’ comes in on the deep side of things bringing tightly edited breaks to a climax and dropping the amen in for good measure. ‘Locked In’ takes the techy approach giving this record a little bit of column “a” and little bit of column “b”. I’m telling you there’s something in this guy’s computer that makes his bass sound so damn thick, it unbelievable. Keep your ears to the ground for the second release from Explicit in form of Pacific’s ‘Another Place’ & ‘Inferno’.

Juju – Thunder EP on Liquid V.
4 Tracks of no-nonsense dub-step business from the man from San Fran. Juju has been feeding us funky d&b for some time now through his Phuturo imprint, as well as well as some harder material alongside DJ Craze with their Cartel imprint in full swing. This EP for Liquid V goes back to the roots vibe, feeling a lot like Calibre and Holdtight’s latest stuff, and while it doesn’t break much new ground, it’s still some of Juju’s best work to date. I highly suggest you give it a listen.

Potential Bad Boy feat. Yush – You’re Mine/Terror To Your Ears on Ganja.
More new material from the forthcoming Dubplate Killaz album. Potential Bad Boy proves he’s got more up his sleeve since his ‘Play It Kick It’ EP. ‘You’re Mine’ is the standout tune here, Yush’s chill and uplifting vocals along PBB’s bouncy bass supply the perfect balance between smooth and hard. It’s unfortunate that these days people think you only need one decent track to make a record, because the only thing stopping this one from being a hit is the flip, which is not even worth listening to.

EZ Rollers – Dust (2004 RMX)/Rhyme & Punishment (Distorted Minds RMX) on Moving Shadow.
The Rollers revamp their sound yet again with a new remix of Dust, not quite comparing to the original, the vocal is removed and the bassline is completely different, nothing really ground-breaking here. Flip it over for Distorted Minds’ twisted bass remix of one of the hip hop joints from their LP, featuring vocals from Doug E Fresh. Once again, not much use of the vocal and very little creativity in the overall tune, sounding very formulaic. Very disappointing for a Moving Shadow release.
