a good starting point is to meditate to a candle...it's easier than just sitting there trying to clear your mind. Just sit in a comfortable position and focus on the flame...

try sitting on your bed or the floor cross legged, keep your back straight but not so straight as to be uncomfortable, once you've done that your ready to begin, there are all kinds of different ways of trying to meditate, i'll just through out a few,

1) close your eyes, and visualize in your mind some 3D shape (sphere, pyramid, cube etc) take that shape and rotate it on one of its axis' until you get sick of it, and then rotate it either on the opposite direction on the same axis or on a different axis. If you are feeling really confident, count ten rotations in one direction on an axis then rotate the shape in the other direction on the same axis ten times, keep doing this for as long as you can

2) close your eyes, visualize an infinitly large pool of water, imagine a drop falling in the center then try to follow in your mind the ripples in the pool as far away from the point of origin as possible.

3)close your eyes, hold your breath for ten seconds, when start breathing again breath in as deep as possible hold it for a moment, then breath out as deep as possible, repeat this several times. Try to be as conscious of your breathing as you can.

i used to go to the local mundir to do yoga and meditate with a master...very interesting. i stopped going due to lack of progression in the class.

Check the local mundir and Buddhist temples...they usually offer free courses but ask for donations.

yah but thats different ...
there's no proper *meditation* there, no silence ..

they're all about BAKTI YOGA which is the way of devoting oneself to a personnal god (for 'em its Krishna obviously) 24/7
the actual monks can't even take a piss wihout showering afterwards ...for they gotta be clean for their personnal god ..
they can't hug anyone either ...

yup, i do. trancendental meditation, focus exercises, blabla. its part of my training regiment from crescent moon school.

next big hurdle is astral travel without the use of hallucinogens.

i recommend vibrating mantras or the names of dieties, has an instantaneous effect. (ex.: nam myoho renge kyo) gluck.
