ECSTASY ON RISE
IN AN alarming new trend, NSW police are uncovering record numbers of
ecstasy-making labs in and around Sydney.
In the past month, the Drug Squad has raided or found five
laboratories - more than for the whole of 2004.
Two of them were capable of churning out millions of illegal tablets,
which sell for $30-$50 each.
Until now, Australian ecstasy production has been relatively
rare.
The drug has customarily been made in Europe and imported.
The growth in homegrown "eccies" indicates criminal syndicates are
responding to the booming demand by partygoers.
