HEROIN SHORTAGE INCREASING OTHER DRUGS' MARKETS: AFP

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) say the shortage of heroin in Australia
has created bigger markets for other drugs including amphetamines and ecstasy.

AFP Commissioner Mike Keelty has addressed an international drug conference
being held in Perth.

He told the conference the shortage of heroin has been caused by
international law enforcement and cooperation, and decreased heroin
production in Burma and Afghanistan.

Approximately 80 per cent of heroin imported to Australia comes from Burma.

Commissioner Keelty says while heroin and cocaine come from crops that must
be maintained, amphetamines and ecstasy can be manufactured anywhere.
