TRAFFICKER NAILED FOR TAX RAP

Crime didn't pay for an Ottawa drug dealer who was sentenced to jail
yesterday for failing to pay taxes on the money he made from
trafficking.

Wayne Campbell, 54, who was part of a drug ring dismantled in 1998,
was also sentenced for trafficking cannabis.

Under proceeds of crime laws, Campbell must forfeit more than $185,000
in cash, vehicles and other assets, including drug paraphernalia.

Campbell was fined $99,000 after it was determined he failed to report
the $343,874 he made from selling drugs. The court ordered Campbell to
pay the fine immediately or face six months in jail.

Campbell and 19 others were arrested on Aug. 5, 1998, under Project
Aversion, an eight-month investigation by the RCMP's Integrated
Proceeds of Crime Section.

Police at the time recovered 26 kg of hash, 11.4 kg of marijuana and
more than $260,000 in cash.

The organization's debt list indicated the drug ring had trafficked
more than 131 kg of hash, 223 kg of marijuana and 4.5 kg of magic
mushrooms.

Campbell was sentenced to one year in prison for both crimes.
