My daughter wants to learn a foreign language. But she has a speech impediment. She wanted Spanish but her speech therapist advised against it because her biggest struggle is the R sound. She cant make it.

How prominent is the R sound in French?
I wanted her to do an Oriental language of some sort. But her school only offers french, latin, spanish, and german.
I'm feeling kinda lonely right now..

R's are not rolled but still a fundamental part of french. Anyone else wanna chime in on this?

If the problem is rolling Rs (tip of the tongue) then forget Euro-French/Spanish, if the the problem is guttural Rs (back of the throat), then forget German and Québecois french ...

Anyway, I don't see a problem with her learning French, even with the 'R' problem -- she'll still be able to get away with being understood. The fundamental parts of language are the rules on grammar and syntax, as long as your pronunciation is close enough, she'll be understood (imo) ;)
I'm feeling you up right now..

Thank you both! this helps a lot. she wanted to learn Japanese but her school doesnt offer it until middle school.
she cant make the rolling R at all. she can sorta manage a guttural R, but it sounds a lot more like a W than an R :P

since its still primary school, it wont hurt to let her try french. if it turns out she doesnt like it or gets frustrated, then no big deal we just move on lol.

r similar to a rolling r, but only trilled once making it sound deceptively like a D to untrained listeners. The sound is often described as being between "r" and "l".
