are you seriously asking why? they reclaimed the word from it's original usage in the slave-trade. the colour of your skin = your value on the market. the lighter the slave's skin was, the more valuable they were. Hence the slave traders would refer to a slave of mixed ancestry as "Mulatto". This is a derivation of "Mule" (an infertile hybrid between a donkey and a horse). It's an offensive racially-charged term that a lot of white people still use, without understanding what it really means, or where it came from.
