Am I the only one who thinks that you can't send someone into a catatonic trance with only a few flashes on a screen ?

Come on, that's fake. It's obvious.

The mind reading phenomenon that is Derren Brown has once again come forth with another shocking experiment that is jam packed with entertainment value. Boomboombooom The man who famously played Russian roulette on live television and almost shooting himself, has committed another edge-of-the-seat shocker in his latest instalment of Derren Brown’s Trick of the Mind (DVDs).

Most recently Derren conducted a video game experiment, touching on themes of game violence and catatonic states. He linked up a pub arcade game with a cable running off into a different room, where there is a laptop controlling the arcade machine.

The game was called 'Waking Dead', a sort of zombie-themed first person shooter adventure. That is a huge understatement to say the least!

The unsuspecting game player put in his money and started to play the game. The game began with a virtual guided corridor walk, with the punter holding a plastic gun controller, ready to shoot at the screen. However, he could never have suspected such a visceral experience, which was imminently drawing closer.

In true virtual Jedi fashion, Brown told the laptop technician to set off successive flashes on the screen, to spark the gamer into a catatonic state. The gamer suddenly slouched his head down onto his chest, and was placed on a stretcher and rolled into an adjacent building.

All the while, you wonder what the hell is going on, that is until you see Derren and his friends rolling the man into a real life version of the game. Then they left him in a room with a machine gun and a dead woman, exactly like in the game. Pure entertainment! Perhaps, bordering on the line of taking it way too far!

In pure Resident Evil (DVDs/Games) style, the guy was at first very confused and tried to help the injured woman. However, once zombie’s started to appear from all directions, he began to feel threatened with the expertly executed surroundings. The guy started to scream at the zombies, obviously convinced by the moaning and flesh wounds, he tried to find a way out until he finally snapped.

In a major change of character behaviour, the guy started to take shots at the zombies, to ensure his survival. Even shooting the woman who he had tried to help earlier on in the experiment.

Meanwhile, Derren Brown and the guy’s two friends watched from another room, seeing their friend go through a real life zombie experience. It was vicious to see - the guy was at first disgusted to shoot the zombies, but later on he started to enjoy the power of shooting the immortals, even letting off a sinister laugh.

Brown later emerged to intervene in the Dawn of the Dead experience, only for the crazed guy to start shooting at him. Hilarious entertainment at the expense of the poor guy! Derren then put him back in a catatonic state and placed him back in the pub, in front of the arcade game.

The twenty-something then woke up and commented about how the game was really good. He also said it was very real! No shit! The guy could not believe it when he saw it.

Whatever next from the tricky, quasi-legal, mind spinner? A kidnapping joke?

The programme sees Derren Brown work his Yoda like mind tricks on various surprised people, in various ways and on many varying levels. Derren Brown is definitely pulling the experiments to keep us all entertained, but how far is too far?

Either way, as long as his ventures are as good as the last one, no one will ever mind. Derren Brown is definitely pushing the envelope in magic and showmanship.
