I've been watching this situation too. I'll try to explain my point of view on this...

-They are still parties happening during the weekends but less than before.

-Even less during the cold seasons.

-Many promoters (But not all) post events on Facebook but not on rave [ .ca ] or only partial info

-Almost all the new members got instant trolled in the forums, making them rage quit or loose interest.

-Since the activities on rave [ .ca ] is quite low, it make the other people loose interest about it.

Yep the rave [ .ca ] of 2000-2008 that was full of life is now quite calm.

It's now all lost if some innovative solutions are developed to make people visit more (live chat, new app, new version etc). Some promotion about it should be done in parties, events and stores to increase the population of new members. Moderators should be more strict about drama and disrespect between members in forums, those moderators should be visible also, like MODERATOR under there names.

This is just few ideas, I'm sure there's many more if people contribute. But something need to be done, that's for sure
I'm feeling where's the other ravers? right now..

I dunno, looks to me like the rave since is UNdeieing ....

Shit's lookin' good for 2013 !

Some decent parties coming up, most styles are on equal footing these days, promoters are starting to contact eachother to avoid a little of the toe-stepping that was going on last summer, newer promoters are quickly learning to do things proper, and the bar nights that have techno stuff and 'rave music' are doing quite well ...

Maybe things are a little slow 'round here, but that's just 'cause of what most of what M-A-X said up there ^

And quite frankly, less parties means more people at each party.

I was just at a wicked Jungle party last weekend, and ain't nothin' deiein' man! ;)

If I remember history class properly, Rave emerged from disco and the event of the technological era, at the end of the 80s. Technology has since been well-implemented, most everyone has a technological device of some sort.

Techno music attracted people who were interested by this emergence, and as technology became more mainstream, people began losing interest. Technology is no longer a novelty.

Rave was also an antagonist to hippie culture. Hippie culture proned polyamory, in contradiction to their parents' religious and conservative ideologies. During the 80s, this led to a dissociation of love and sex, if you will.

Today, overpopulation is becoming a growing concern for a lot of people, so love and sex are not really popular right now, and rave culture has become a refuge for a lot of people, and has become more of a secret society than a culture. It is today perhaps what disco was in the mid-80s, mostly small, private parties, mostly attended by people already part of a tightly-knit group.

It's not dead, its origins are just not novel anymore. It's just unpopular. Laser shows and techno music don't impress nobody anymore, but was that really ever the intent?

At first it definitely wasn't the intent. It was just awesome, and a lot of people wanted to witness this awesomeness, which made it attractive to venture capitalists.

If rave culture can come up with holographic projectors that run off 3-phase electric current and only project Princess Leia in 20 m by 5 m, then it might, in fact be "reborn". It might "die", or it might "pulse" into something else, in the hippie-disco-funk-electro-techno-dance-trance-dubstep continuum.

Most of these cultures were drug-centric, though, and drugs aren't exactly as trendy as they once were.

Mind you, one may see here the opportunity for the ultimate revival.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I think you, as well as the OP, are a bit wrong on this one.

(then again, she barely said anything, don't think any of us can really extrapolate on what she meant; perhaps she just fell on that epicly-named thread and had a moment of nostalgia!)

... But I digress. Here's a wall of text as rebuttal:

You seem to have a bleak view of the global rave movement. While the movement suffered major repression and deieied (sp?) in the early 2000s (actual oldschoolers will all readily agree, and I myself mostly lived vicariously through their stories), I've personally seen it rise from its ashes as early as 2008? Maybe 7?

New blood. A slew of it. Most definitely "uneducated" as a whole, but that's a given when you discover something new. And perhaps there was a lack of oldskoolers to teach 'em, too jaded and busy doing k to care?

Still, tons of awesome elements. Fuck, actual candy ravers, a decade after it was "cool".

Also a slew of promoters. Some a bit more capitalistic or less dedicated than others, perhaps, but one would be way dumb to think that the hippie movement didn't have its own share of... Leeches?

I've NEVER personally seen so many free parties. People BUILDING soundsystems. SOO much love for music all around.

To me, that's "rave" culture. The same primordial desire to dance to the beat that makes people gather into deserts, forests, abandoned buildings.

Burning Man. Shambhala. Teknival. Valhalla. Open Mind. St-Jean Basstiste. Warehouse parties. "Legal" venues. Heck, even bar and club nights that extend into loft parties with 100+ attending.

As a median, at least one "rave" party every Friday and Saturday. Sometimes two per night. All-nighters on Thurdays of regular (not-long) weekends, for fuck's sake

The since is alive and kicking. To me, the "ultimate revival". Though perhaps simply "pulsed" into something else.

At this point, though, it's just semantics to me.
