DESCRIPTION:Heavy Trip is excited to be welcoming Magic Tuber Stringband to Montreal in Dec\nfor two special shows\, an evening and a matinee. Both are co-presented and\ncurated by Negative Capabilities. Both are limited capacity and expected to sell\nout.\n\nHailing from North Carolina\, Magic Tuber Stringband are a trio at the forefront\nof artists inhabiting the living musical traditions of the Appalachian region.\nNot as preservationists\, but as fluent speakers shaping the forms with their\ninventive new ideas. Arching melodies combine with mystical drones\, balancing\nthe group between folk and deep listening traditions.\n\nhttps://magictuberstringband.bandcamp.com/album/heavy-water\n\nClassically trained violist Geneviève Heistek has been an active contributor to\nMontreal’s independent music community for over 25 years\, working across rock\,\njazz\, and experimental genres.\n\nHeistek is best known for her work in Hanged Up\, an avant-folk-metal duo formed\nwith drummer Eric Craven. The project released three albums on Constellation\nRecords\, including Transit of Venus (2012)—a collaboration with minimalist\npioneer Tony Conrad that was named one of SPIN Magazine’s top 10 avant-garde\nrecords of that year.\n\nHer collaborative history includes co-founding the post-folk group Sackville\,\nthe Mile End Ladies’ String Auxiliary (MELSA)\, and the ambient post-rock\ncollective Set Fire to Flames. She has performed alongside artists such as\nviolinist Warren Ellis and Patti Smith\, and contributed improvisational work to\nthe soundtrack of the Oscar-nominated NFB film Madame Tutli-Putli. She has\ntoured extensively\, and performed at international festivals including Roskilde\,\nAll Tomorrow’s Parties\, and the Festival International de Musique Actuelle de\nVictoriaville.\n\nCurrently\, Heistek is a long-standing member of Sam Shalabi’s avant-Egyptian big\nband\, Land of Kush\, appearing on multiple releases including The Big Mango and\nSand Enigma. Recent projects include performing alongside Shalabi and composer\nIsak Goldsneider in Shaista Latif’s multi-media production Like an Eagle. She\ndebuted a section of her new solo project for viola\, voice and live loops at\nDrone Fest 2026.\n\nhttps://hangedup.bandcamp.com/album/transit-of-venus\n\nJesse Eckerlin is a guitar player and writer based in so-called Montreal. He\nreleased his debut album Promissory Note in winter 2026. Upon release\, it was a\nBandcamp bestseller in acoustic\, instrumental\, fingerstyle\, and American\nPrimitive guitar for several months. He curates concerts and releases zines and\ncassettes with Negative Capabilities.\n\nhttps://negativecapabilities.bandcamp.com/album/promissory-note\n\nSOURCE: https://montreal.askapunk.net/event/magic-tuber-string-band-genevieve-heistek-and-jesse-eckerlin/
