DESCRIPTION:Heavy Trip is very excited to be welcoming Magic Tuber Stringband to Montreal in\nDec for two special shows\, an evening and a matinee. Both are co-presented and\ncurated by Negative Capabilities. Both are limited capacity and expected to sell\nout.\n\nHailing from North Carolina\, Magic Tuber Stringband are a trio at the forefront\nof artists inhabiting the living musical traditions of the Appalachian region.\nNot as preservationists\, but as fluent speakers shaping the forms with their\ninventive new ideas. Arching melodies combine with mystical drones\, balancing\nthe group between folk and deep listening traditions.\n\nhttps://magictuberstringband.bandcamp.com/album/heavy-water\n\nSoledad Coyoli grew up surrounded by the surrealist paintings of Leonora\nCarrington and Remedios Varo\, her grandmother’s sculptures\, La Malinche\, La\nLlorona\, the robot parts their uncle used to build\, and the sacred music her\nfather listened to. Their sound work draws inspiration from the tradition of\nMexican - latin american song and explores the intersection of different\nlanguages\, cultures\, and technologies\, as well as their Nahuatl roots (their\nname means “bell” in Nahuatl). Their music\, recipient of the Unesco-Aschberg\nbursary in 2014\, has been presented at some of Mexico’s most important cultural\ncenters\, such as the MUAC (University Museum of Contemporary Art)\, the Franz\nMayer Museum\, and the Center for Digital Culture in Mexico City.\n\nSince arriving in Tiohtiá:ke/Mooniyang/Montréal\, their work has taken a new\ndirection: the voice and the body as fluid\, mysterious\, mutable and\ncollaborative materials. Soledad explores hybrid musical and bodily territories\,\nin search of a root—an identity—a nepantla\, a Nahuatl word often translated as\n“the land in the middle” that they might call “home.”\n\nhttps://soledadcoyoli.bandcamp.com/album/una-ola-de-fuerza\n\nDoors 2PM\, Show at 3PM\; ALL AGES\; 20$\nDM for address\, or available upon purchase of ticket.\n\nSOURCE: https://montreal.askapunk.net/event/magic-tuber-string-band-and-soledad-coyoli/
