Bands - One Candle Power
One Candle Power
Location:Canada, Quebec, Montreal
Genre:Unknown
Description:one candle power emerged as a four-piece indie rock band from Montreal, Quebec in May 2001. Motivated by personal catharsis, live performance, seeing new cities and meeting new people, they have since then become a hard working institution.

Chrissy Musacchio has been a singer/songwriter in the Montreal music scene since the age of 14. After playing in a mix of punk and rock n' roll bands for 7 years, Musacchio felt the urge to embrace a more delicate and stripped down sound. In the summer of 2001, after having composed a handful of songs on acoustic guitar, this Montreal native decided to enlist the help from other musicians by placing a classified ad seekign a cellist on her university's website.

Moses Mathur began collaborating with Musacchio after replying to the ad. Although he was not a cellist like she had hoped for, Musacchio and Mathur discovered that they shared song-writing chemistry that was worth preserving.

After several meetings together, Mathur suggested that his friend Dave Castagner (an upright bassist) join the band, with the hope that the instrument's similarity to the cello would contribute to the heart wrenching sound that Musacchio was seeking. Soon afterwards, mutual friend Mark Zadel joined the group as drummer - thus completing the original line up of the band. The musicians called themselves "one candle power" after a line in a Sylvia Plath poem; the name was intended to reflect the sensitivity and dynamics of their music.

After roughly a year with the original line-up, Musacchio and Mathur decided to step it up a notch and find musicians that would be willing to put as much effort into the group as they did. In fall 2002, drummer Julien Landry and (shortly afterwards) bassist Andre Guerette offered a new blood transfusion into one candle power. Despite incurring several line-up changes, and a switch from upright to electric bass, this current one candle power line up still continue to carefully monitor their dynamics in order to maintain their original style of songwriting. one candle power's music ranges from sweet and beautiful vocal harmonies and melodic guitars to an arsenal of controlled and uncontrolled bursts of energy from all its members. Although the band will make wall-flowers tap their toes, their roots in great technical songwriting cannot be ignored.
