Title:Bike Courier
Posted On:2007-06-30 17:30:45

Over the years many people have come and asked me info on what it is like to be a bike courier here in Montreal.

So you want to be a bike courier here in beautiful Montréal? I have ridden in 8 winters on my bike and once the snow goes everyone think this is the best time to be a bike courier. What you are thinking of doing as a job is offering a service. In this business it is feast or famine for there is no middle ground. If your costumers are not busy you are not busy. In mosyt cases the summer is slow period for business. What people have to understand that in most cases this is paid by package & no hourly wage? Yes there are some companies that offer guaranties. If you thought this would be an eeasy cash grab it is not. The first thing is this is purely physical job. I case my dinner on my bike 9 hours a day. There is a huge difference in biking for your own pleasure and doing the courier job. You will be sore as shit from your body trying to do the job. This will pass after a point and that goes for your sore ass if u have one? The nice thing about this job is biking as much as you are going to do u work your entire body out. 9 hours torking your body in a prone position combo by your legs pumping makes for a brutal workout @ high speed. So I just want you to understand this is really hard work. This is not just a job, but a life style for you have to take care of your body and you have to love it for there is no middle ground for you either love it or hate it. Just like with any sub culture this feeling of brotherhood which is very much alive in the courier world. Doing this job can and is expensive for you use your bike. I don’t know about other people but I ride my bike hard. You will be working in Mother Nature’s playground and she will throw everything she has @ you with pleasure. So dress for it or you will be in pain. The wicked thing about this job is you get to see things most people don’t for you go every where and any where to pickup & drop of things. In doing so you come into contact with best & worst of society. If you are looking for a job where you can explore yourself & maybe finds who you are then this is one of those jobs. Now what I want to stress is that this is a crazy ass job and you can get killed. I have been hit 7 times by a car last being the worst one. I have had 6 door prizes (car door opens and you slam into it). The best advice I can give anyone is when you get on your bike use your mind to ride & not your emotion for they will kill you.

Then there is the sheep factor to contend with. What I mean by the sheep factor is this folks is people walking around. Next time you are downtown stop and watch the intersection for a turn. Everyone fallows what is in front of them & they don’t look either. The worst part is you have from time to time people popping out between cars and so on. So far as I know there have been 2 deaths to those that popped out in front of a biker.

I just wanted to put things into a realistic light….

So is it fun doing the courier? Damn straight it is fun and that is way I do it

So if there is anyone that wants more info on the topic or need advice please free to contact me

I was looking at the upcoming parties, and thinking of the recent problems the scene had with the police, and to be honest, I like the way things are going. The scene did need a little cleaning up. Throwing parties became so easy everyone could do it. While we had a lot of parties coming up, the quality wasn't always there. Having parties every weekend isn't always good for the scene as well. It burns people up. A lot of ravers will go to every party, cause the scene is still pretty small, and they usually know the promoter or a couple of djs playing. Regular readers of this blog will remember that I believe the best is to go raving once every month, or even every 2 months. Less parties give people time to rest, and everyone can meet up at the big rave that happens once in a while. I do believe that with good promotion and quality line ups, we can actually see attendance go up.

Since the laws are harsher, parties have to be bigger in order to happen. Sure, smaller loft parties still happen, but they're more private parties than raves. Most of these are attended by friends of the promoters, and no real promotion is done. The "medium sized" parties don't happen anymore. These are the all local raves that happened every weekend. Sure, they were fun, but no one went to them all, except hardcore ravers and promoters who have to give out flyers. Big events are what makes the scene healthy. These have a bigger budget, and can afford to be 100% legal. Legal venues cost more, and are worth it for big parties.

Club events are also starting to happen more frequently. Parties that end at 3 have the advantage of selling alcohol, not risk the chance of being busted, and allow people to actually go on with their lives the day after. The same music can be played, it even opens up possibility, as they're cheaper to throw, and more energy can be put into the line up. Also, this can bring people who don't like staying up all night to the scene. After all, it's all about the music.

This is how I see the immediate future of our scene. Club events on a regular basis, and a really big rave once in a while. I'm happy with this turnout, we're actually starting to go the same way Europe went some years ago. Same music, but a more mature scene.

I'm sure most of you have seen it, Project Mayhem is throwing Time Machine 2 on September 8th. We're bringing Frankie Bones to Montreal, alongside Indica, Philgood, Sarcastic and Mana 7. The second room features various genres, with djs Mad, Merkurius, Tamerax, Matduke, Matricks, Metzen, Tipsy T, Rhys Taylor, Don Louis and Psonyk. I personnally love this line up. We have an oldschool headliner, awesome djs who contributed a lot to the oldschool scene, and a second room featuring various genres.

I honestly never saw that come in, but some people have been kinda complaining that this isn't a hardcore party. While a lot of people are absolutely hyped about this, I do feel that some people came to expect happy hardcore and freeform out of our events. First of all, there is going to be hardcore at this event. Matricks, Don Louis, Metzen, Tipsy T, Merkurius; these djs will all play different genres of hardcore. In fact, the church basement, Time Machine's second room, will feature more hardcore than any other genre.

I think some of our regulars wanted a hardcore headliner. First, yes, I will book Luna-C eventually. When, I don't know, but it will happen. He's high on my headliner list, and he really wants to play in Montreal after Back to the Groove. While you all can expect a lot of hardcore djs at our future events, you can expect other genres as well. Personnally, I listen to different things and as such, I like to promote different things. Don't worry, I'm not leaving hardcore behind, I'm just throwing other things.

When you think about it, this isn't new. The first Time Machine was a various genre event. There was 2 sets of happy hardcore and 1 set of freeform. The rest was trance, nu-nrg and techno. During Thank God it's Thursday, we had different genres of music as well. In fact, our two most successful nights were a techno night and a trance night. Dave the Drummer and dj Emm, to be exact.

Hardcore will always be featured at every Project Mayhem all night event. After all, our 4 residents play this genre. You should see hardcore as the genre you'll hear at every event, but not as the focus of every event. I'm still opened to suggestions from ravers. So far, I got a really good feedback toward Time Machine 2, same for the Dave the Drummer night. This makes me feel like continuing to promote those nights. You can all expect more various genre events, of even techno events in the future, as well as colorful happy hardcore parties full of candy kids. I just happen to like a lot of stuff.

the perfect job
i think would to
be a real cat.

If it's Xanadu that
you need
I mean
If there's Xanadu
I can do

Your love is gold
My money was sold
You got away with murder
You left the body in
a cottage
You won't get into college
Ensure me this:
Infinite bliss

something's happening
in my brain
A songbird keeps singing
that same refrain
It reminds me of puking

When you're stoned, baby, I am drunk
And we make love, it seems a little desolate
It's hard sometimes not to look away
And think what's the point when I'm having to hold this fire down
I think I'll explode if I can't feel this freely now

[Chorus:]
If you won't let me fall for you
Then you won't see the best that I would love to do for you
Instead you will be missing me when I go
Cos' I'm bored of hangin out in your cold

When I feel loved baby, I join the road
And the world moves with me
When I feel lost I just slip away
Silently, quietly take my things and go
And think what's the point, think where's the hope we're coming home

[Chorus]

And if you find one day, find some freedom and relief
With this freedom maybe, maybe you will find some peace
With this peace baby, I hope it brings you back to me
Bring you home, take me home

[Chorus]

Oh, take me home
Oh, take me home
When you're stoned, baby, take me home
Oh...

November
Azure Ray

So I'm waiting for this test to end,
so that lighter days can soon begin;
I'll be alone, but maybe more carefree,
Like a kite that floats so effortlessly;

I was afraid to be alone,
but now I'm scared that's how I like to be
;
All these faces none the same,
how can there be so many personalities?

So many lifeless, empty hands,
so many hearts in great demand;
and now my sorrow seems so far away,
until I'm taken by these bolts of pain;

But I turn them off, and tuck them away,
until those rainy days that make them stay;
And then I'll cry so hard to these sad songs,
and the words still ring, once here, now gone;

And they echo through my head everyday,
and I don't think they'll ever go away;
Just like thinking of your childhood home,
but we can't go back, we're on our own;

Ohh. . .

But I'm about to give this one more shot,
And find it in myself, I'll find it in myself;

So we're speeding towards that time of year,
to the day that marks that you're not here;
And I think I'll want to be alone,
so please understand if I don't answer the phone;

I'll just sit and stare at my deep blue walls,
until I can see nothing at all;
Only particles, some fast, some slow,
all my eyes can see is all I know...

________________________________________

But I'm about to give
this One. More. Shot.
And find it in myself,
I'll find it in myself
I'll find it in myself.

I have grow weak,because i was alienized.

I tought I could adjust to this world,That i could be one of many,
but The ppl around me have proven me that i am not one of them.

I feel angry,I feel lost,I feel exiled.

I seek my brothers and sisters,I seek peace,but am left on a battlefeild.

My emotions are lost in a myst ot hypocrisis.people think they are worth trust but they only thinik of themselves.

I am still fully prepared for what is to come.

I am still myself BEWARE.

I have weaken but im still made of steel.
