Elles ferment les unes après les autres, organisons des raves dedans !?

Mettez des photos/ infos d'églises fermées/abandonnées dans votre quartier

Post info/pictures about abandoned/closed churches in your neighborhood

I tried, for just about every party I threw for the last 8 years, to call up the churches and see if they'd be willing ... (Altogether I must've called and/or researched a good 30 holy houses)

I basically got a bunch of excuses, or was (rarely) told that I could if it ended at 3am. I know Melo & co. did a party in a church a couple of years back, but it was in a residential area, so the cops were around 'cause of noise complaints (mostly from the pl outside though).

It really is a shame. Churches were the perfect venue, and even though I'm vehemently against religion, they did benefit from the money they got - and that helps the parishioners too (ie. the community).

But of course, the City is a big asshole and put a stop to all that ... 'cause, even though no harm no foul, they just don't want us around.

I really don't think the priests really cared about what we did in their churches -- 'cause to most religions the only thing more important than faith is cash ;)

BUT, all that said, send a smooth talking mofo to a church being threatened to shut-down due to monetary issues, and someone just might have a shot a re-opening churches as an option ... .. .
I'm feeling you up right now..

I keep seeing youtube videos of people bullied by cops and read the description or the "montaged" text ; at court, a good part of the time they (police) don't show up although sometime they lie. it's their prerogative to give ticket with no foundation and our (citizen) right to contest them. just be ready for the bullying, get witnesses and recording/testing equipment, paperwork and be ready to all go to court. yes it's a lot of effort but if it worth not getting bullied?

Not sure where you're trying to go with that. There are a bunch of laws cops sometimes use to bully people, however those concerning mass amounts of people in a single room with high decibel levels are pretty airtight

They COULD tolerate, and they did for long. But most promoters don't disclose their revenues (or losses, but heh), so all levels of govt don't usually get money off of "raves". It IS also a hotspot of illegal activities, i.e. drug sales. Dancing all night to loud repetitive music IS seen as a marginal activity to do, hence the repression from a judicial/legal standpoint.

All the more reason to be an anarchist, heh! But mainly, it's a call to promoters to be as safe as possible and über ninja. It's no longer advisable to call the fire marshall to have a spot checked out before the event, but there are still a couple things that can be done:

- Promoters should make sure the chosen spot is safe and secure (no fire hazards, spot can easily be exited, etc... These are the main arguments cops can use to shut down an event, and they enjoy it when a promoter has done his/her homework)
- Control the crowds (i.e. next to no loitering outside, no large groups yelling, etc.)

- I know people like loud music, but managing the sound level is also very key. Noise WILL attract cops.

This is all pretty common sense. But it usually allows for cops to tolerate and not give tickets. I've seen it happen.

... I've seen cops walk away when they see the promotion group is efficiently managing the event (dealt with cops too many times to list myself), and i've seen cops shut down events because the place was evidently unsafe to use (a recent party at a rundown building with tons of fire hazard, a very bendy wooden floor and next to no exits comes to mind, no disrespect intended).

I've also seen successful events in shady rundown places where cops never show up because everyone is pretty sneaky. So whatever. We've been through this way too often before.

To be honest, I dunno how that party managed to last for so long. Though me and a couple peeps didn't get to enjoy the music much, I know Mickos and me and a couple peeps kept circling the place to disperse people

I'd love to party in a church again, there was also a psy party on xmas a couple years back in a church way out East. Though at some point, the smoke/fire alarms (i think) got triggered, Fire Dept. came and.. Well the priest was very sad, made me sad to see that.

Kinda hope he didn't get a fine. This would be the main reason why they wouldn't rent us their "venues" anymore.

There IS a church doing rock shows these days, on Henri-Julien or something. Death Cab for Cutie is coming there on Apr. 20. I've thought about approaching them for an event or something. They might be convinced if promoters look like they have their shit together.

My first rave was in a church basement, wizzy noise was headlining.

I am surprised there are still even raves today, it seems so hard to organize. The organizers and promoters that I know seem to go through hell each time...

Il y aura un rave underground le 6 avril dans une 'vraie' église désaffectée à Montréal.

Je mettrai plus de détails bientôt.

heh .. yup. I'm pretty much done organizing all-night events by myself -- and honestly, has nothing to do with money, motivation, music, DJs, deco, sound, etc., it has everything to do with venues. Either there are neighbors, or it's too expensive for what it's worth, or too bustable, or too far, or too nasty, or too dangerous, or too over-used; and all that makes it way too much work & trouble to find a decent place ... But, I therefore remain impressed whenever I see a promoter find/use a cool place! And since I'm not one to steal venue ideas, well, bars it is! xD
