But I will tell you, I've been suing Ubuntu (linux) for some time now, and I love it, but NOT for production. In linux, there is an answer to every existing program from mac to windows, but the one thing that blows is stuff for music production. My friend who turned my onto linux told me to install the music production pack (or whatever its called) and I tried it out, but was severely disappointed. Music production needs professional programs. I'm 200% for open-source software, but not for making music. Cool that people are trying, and I'm sure some mad-geniuses could make it work, but it just isn't as perfected as Ableton, Fruity-Loops, etc. (and there is no linux version of those that I can find) |

There were no proper trackers to make tunes with .. there was a Sound Forge type program, something to fuck around with effects on a sound, some Dj mixing program, but nothin' like Fruity Loops. It was more about managing/mixing sounds/tunes , not actual music creation. I'm sure proper music making programs exist on linux, but I haven't come across 'em yet. It's like, no one in the world is, understandably, willing to put the time in to make a program as expansive as Ableton, or FL, or even Reason. Then there are all the VSTs that need to be re-written for linux ... too much of a pain in the ass. Its one thing to mimic MSN or a word processor, but massive music software? Maybe some genius somewhere will do it some time. In the meantime, I use Windows on another 'puter to produce. So, I'm also curious -- just saying 'on linux' is not enough; what program was used ?? |

It's kinda like Rewire, but for EVERYTHING on your computer that makes sound.. Ok if you want it sync'd you'll need to use MIDI or programs that support syncing, but with JACK, you could, say, wire Winamp into your DAW, or a movie player, or a game you're playing, etc..
And it's not just for music programs.. if you're using, say, skype or some other voice chat and you want to give someone a preview of what you're working on, use JACK to send the audio of your DAW to the input of the voice-chat.. I think it's an amazing idea to have something that works like a mixer/router for ALL the audio sources on your PC. |
