I found a few old flyers here at my house the other day... tucked away in a box of my stuff.

old jungle & techno raves in Toronto and Hamilton from 94/95 - some I went to, some I just got handed the flyer and kept em

it was the first time I'd looked at em since 1996, so it was a bit of a timewarp...

now that I actually know the names and the scene so well, I had a closer look at the lineups... and I noticed these names from Montreal on this flyer:

the event is a Syrous jungle party - September 95 ... but it says,,

"from Montreal .... Krista, Double A Twist" - and lists their affiliation as "Jungle Jungle" ..

I didn't actually go to that jam, but I also saw Krista's name in the lineup for this one that I went to in Spring 95 - but I don't actually remember seeing Krista play... aside from the headliners the night was kind of a blur

anyway - those early Syrous jams were legendary. they didn't fuck around - they booked proper talent, and Toronto had the best jungle DJs on the planet outside of England,

so I figure if these Montreal DJs were getting booked at big Toronto jams in 94/95 they must've been really dope =)

so... can any of the few oldskool cats who were around back in 94/95 tell me who Krista, Double A and Twist are?

Surely,

Krista was part of the DNA records crew, played a lot with other locals like Rob Brown, Tiga etc.. She was really known in Montreal for her sounds as a breaks and house dj, though she did mix other stuff as well. She did a lot of the Channel events locally and played at groove society as well as sona and playground. A really sweet person and a kickass dj, I've got nothing but great memories of her sets.

As for Double A, well, he was one part of a two man crew known as Double A and Twist. They were huge influences in the Montreal Dnb and Jungle scene and dropped on the regular at parties and bar jams between 93-99. They also were part of the original DnB Sessions, weekly's at Angels and Le Dogue, both quality dj's and dope people too.

Krista was one of Montreals first female djs and the first female dj I ever heard

I remember showing up at a rave and all of a sudden its a girl playing. We were all pretty intrigued as it was virtually unheard of back then.

She really is the one that opened the doors for a lot of other female djs in Montreal, mainly cause she proved that girls could rock it just as hard as the guys on the decks.

She originally started out with a crew called the Bus Company which was also one of the first rave promotion compagnies in Montreal (with Tiga and Gnat).

They organized a few parties legendary parties, the most legendary of which was the ORB show at Metropolis.

Don't know if she still spins, we were probably the last ones to have her play in Montreal when she spun at the Grill.

Double A and Twist were a dnb dj duo, among some of the first dnb djs in Montreal and definitely some of the most influential wise.

They were the first guys I know of locally to release dnb tracks to critical success, on their own label (forget the name).

Somewhere in the 90s they got kind of frustrated with the local scene and called it quits on dnb. I do remember there was a TON OF DRAMA in the dnb scene back then, a lot of backstabbing, a lot of peeps undercutting each other, although to be honest I was probably privilege to a lot more info then most, working at a record store and all and having to listen to all the djs beefs all day long between two tracks lol...

Funnily enough the last time Double A played in Montreal it was also at the Grill, he played funk breaks.

Definitely two pioneers of the local dnb scene

PS Twist manages Tiga now, been doing it for years
I'm feeling sunshine right now..

I remember Krista tagteaming with Autechre!!!! at an after party
for like 8 hours, she was a great dj and very nice person she played
funky shit mainly don't remember her playing d&b though but breaks definately!

!
double a and twist were definately the first to release d&b tracks in mtl,my fave
is a rmx of erika badhu!
They brought grooverider for an event called this & that, which was the
first rave to include a jungle room in 1994!

G'nat and tiga were the first to play reinforced records and other early
jungle,i remember when tiga sets were pretty chipmunky, gnat was my fave
though he had the guts to play anything!

Jordan dare was pretty breaks and d&b back then, sase 1 was d&b for a long time

i got so many old flyers that i should post here !
I'm feeling feelin da sunshine right now..

I was at a BBQ with Krista on Saturday, Mayday and myself have been trying to drag her our of retirement for an old school set at The Session one of these days.

Double A lives in Halifax now, he's a teacher I believe, but he still plays out.

Twist is indeed Tiga's manager, he lives in London now, I believe he also manages Booka Shade, Erol Alkan, and some other major artists.
I'm feeling the session right now..

Double A was THE SHIT!!!
They used to do a wenesday night called "The Session" back in the day that bounced around from sona to jai bar (now koi bar) to jinxi (now gymnasse) and hosted acts like jumping jack frost (now i'm feeling old) and dieselboy all the time.
Dune used to share an office with bombay records back in those days, and would usually hire me to flyer for most events.
back in those days flyering was practically a real job.
at least enough so that it at enabled me to sustain a 5 night a week drinking habit...
So yeah... big ups those guys!!!!
LIKE BO!!!!
BBRRRRRRRAAAAAPPPPPP!! BBRRRRRRRAAAAAPPPPPP!!!!! BBRRRRRRRAAAAAPPPPPP!!!!!
SEEEELLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEKKKKKTTTTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Btw... Is it still cool to refer to turntables as "THE WHEELS OF STEEL"??? or do you get beat up for that now?????

To this day i still don't know what the hell a VERSION EXCURSION is????
I'm feeling republican right now..

There's also a well known house label called Nude recordings from England or France

I think their sublabel was more trip hop, wasn't that guy Jaffa on their label?
