lately at my new place, late at night, I hear this strange bird call above my apartment.

some bird, that only comes out late at night, keeps doing circles right above the place making this weird cry

I heard it again just now, so I went out on the patio and watched the sky until I finally scoped it circling overhead. it is pretty big too. looked about the size of a seagull.

so I looked it up and it's called a Night Hawk ->

apparently it is a kind of Nightjar, or "Goatsucker"

"Nightjars are medium-sized nocturnal or crepuscular birds with long wings, short legs and very short bills. They are sometimes referred to as goatsuckers from the mistaken belief that they suck milk from goats."

[ redpath-museum.mcgill.ca ]

"On a warm summer evening in city, suburbs, or wilderness, you may hear a buzzy "peent" emanating from overhead. Scan the sky and you may catch sight of the aerial acrobatics of the Common Nighthawk. The Common Nighthawk is not a hawk at all, but is actually a member of the Goatsucker family. This bird engulfs high-flying insects on the wing with it's huge mouth. Surely this species, where abundant, does much to control insect populations. The Nighthawk traditionally nests on the ground in wide open areas such as burns and clearcuts. During the last century, this species has learned to nest on flat, gravel-covered roofs, which explains why it is often heard and seen in unexpected areas, such as downtown Montreal."

cool! I have a Night Hawk nesting by our building =)

anyway I was happy to solve that little mystery

There's nighthawks near my place too, i love to hear them at night, it relax me :)
"psshoooo"

at first i was also wondering what bird made that sound...
i knew whippoorwills live at night, but they don't make "psshooo" sounds.
But then, nighthawks and whippoorwills are closely related.
I'm feeling / right now..

damn! that is a great picture! who took it? Peregrine Falcons are fucking awesome. when they stoop to attack their prey, they can dive at over 200 miles per hour. which is insane

I think it's cool that these animals were able to adapt to living in the middle of a city. especially the Peregrine, which was on the verge of extinction

The gore on its face is what was left of a pigeon.

And a baby:

I think it's a baby; same feathers and the first one was taking care of it, like a mother does to babies :P

^^^

I thought too when I saw it, because of the orange colouring, etc. I saw one up north once

but it's pretty fat and fluffy for a kestrel, and the one I saw was really colourful - like this

I dunno. it's hard to say. if it's hanging around adult peregrines, it probably is a baby
