[ en.wikipedia.org ] Lionel-Adolphe Groulx (January 13, 1878 - May 23, 1967), called Abbé Groulx (Canon Groulx), was a Roman Catholic priest, historian and nationalist. Groulx was born at Chenaux, Quebec, Canada, and died in Vaudreuil, Quebec. After his seminary training and studies in Europe he taught at Valleyfield College, then the Université de Montréal. In 1927 he founded and edited a monthly journal called Action Française that later changed its name to L'action canadienne-française. In the inter-war period, Groulx was an avowed admirer of Benito Mussolini and suggested in an 1934 article that Quebec could use a leader like Il Duce. Lionel Groulx called the Canadian Confederation of 1867 a disaster and espoused the theory that Quebec's only hope for survival was to foster a Roman Catholic Quebec as a bulwark against English power. He also developed a Quebec history curriculum that ignored the fact that France chose to keep Guadaloupe and hand over Quebec to Great Britain in the 1763 Treaty of Paris. Groulx was very successful promoting his brand of ultramontanism. Through his writings and teaching at the university, and his association with the intellectual elite of French Quebec he had a profound influence on many people including Michel Chartrand and Camille Laurin. While studying in Europe between 1906 and 1909, Groulx wrote letters to his family in which he asserted that everything possible should be done to keep the Jews out of Quebec because he knew what the Jews and the Freemasons were capable of doing. In her 1993 book, The Traitor and the Jew: Anti-Semitism and the Delirium of Extremist Right-Wing Nationalism in French Canada from 1929-1939 (Antisémitisme et nationalisme d'extrême-droite dans la province de Québec 1929-1939), French-Canadian author and historian Esther Delisle documented the lifelong anti-Semitism on the part of Lionel Groulx, detailing his writings filled with denunciations of the Jews, blaming them for numerous social ills. Her attributions of pseudonymous articles to Groulx have been seriously questioned, however, as has her assertion that Groulx was an active fascist subversive. Delisle's book also recounted the support given the Vichy regime in France during World War II by the Quebec nationalist elite. Kevin Henley, professor of history at Collège de Maisonneuve in Montreal wrote that Groulx helped smuggle Milice official Jacques de Bernonville into Quebec. De Bernonville, the right hand man to Klaus Barbie, had been convicted of war crimes in France and sentenced to death. Lionel Groulx's major writings are Histoire du Canada français (1951), and Notre maître le passé. Groulx founded the Institut d'histoire d'Amérique française in 1946, a small institute located in Montreal that is devoted to the historical study of the French presence in North America and the publication of La revue d'histoire de l'Amérique française. A station on the Montreal Metro was named for him. In November of 1996, the League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada officially requested that the Executive Committee of the Montreal Urban Community (M.U.C.) recommend a name change to the Lionel Groulx metro station in Montreal. |

i had a research to do about french canadian autors this year, and i had to talk about lionel groulx... funny to see how he was differently presented (my sources (books and websites) were french. Anyway, Lionel Groulx was an important autor in quebec cuz he inspired following autors by his nationalist ideas, not by his racist ones. |

I was implying that, with a government like Quebec has, it's no wonder the drop-out rates are what they are, and that the government can't manage its finances! That wasn't clear, I appologise, and I hope it is now! But, yeah, QC Gov't does dumb DUMB shit like that all the time. They do racial intolerance the way the Old French do incompetance. Fine examples of this racism above and beyond Lionel "Mein Kampf" Groulx include: 1) Jaques "It was those fucking ethnics that made us lose the referendum " Parizeau. 2) Dr. Pierre Mailloux (radio personality) who is under CRTC investigation for implying in June (2005!...NOT 1935) that Blacks are primitive next to white europeans. 3) Bill 101 which scared out all the big anglo business ($$) to Toronto and dropped QC's economy to the competitive level of Romania and Latvia, and just behind Mexico. Now it looks like Quebecers would rather have a PQ government. While I enjoy the cheap property values that the political instability of the PQ brings with them, don't the soaring taxes and unemployment rates and plummeting incomes make life generally harder on Quebecers? My question is: When will these fine, intelligent People of Quebec get a clue and realize they're fucking themselves by choosing such an impotent political party and that Toronto is gladly taking their share of the money? |

He said that the the referedum was lost because of money and because of the votes of the etnics. Which is not nice to say, but statisticly true. It's like to say that PQ was never able to elect a deputy in Outremont because of the vote of the jews. We all know that a big big big majority of jews in Outremont won't ever vote for an independant party. It's not politicaly correct to say, but it's true. Medias use and deform what he said every time they talk about him.

i'd love to hear the reasoning behind that.. because of bill 101 english people growing up in quebec have a better chance of getting a good job. why? because it forces those english people to learn french, which then makes them bilingual. meanwhile french people growing up learn only french with very basic english skills.. which is great and dandy in the bubble that french polititians like to live in, but north america speaks english. if you can't speak english you will have a very hard time getting a decent job. |

Jacques Parizeau made a diplomatic mistake saying such thing right after the second referendum. He shouldn't have said that.......... even though it wasnt completly false......... Immigration is a federal government thing i think (tell me if im wrong). As the referendum approached, their **critères** of immigration were way lower then anytime else and they gave **citoyenneté canadienne** to anybody... so they were there, in a new country, in a franco province, they didnt know the place but they knew that the CANADA government let them in. so what did they answer to the question «do you want to get separate from Canada?»? (i dont know if it is that exactly, but its something like that). For the bill 101, theres an important historical context that i dont want to explain in english cuz its pretty hard for me ( =P ) and in french...well...its long and you wont read it anyway lol. Finally, for the PQ... Quebecers made society choices during the Révolution Tranquille and they arent ready to change those choices (if they were, the Charest government would have suscited less negative reactions and big manif). ...Looks like we prefer to pay more taxes and impots and keep our public system than to keep more money in our pockets and pay for everything. And there was surveys about that while the students were on strike that confirm what i just said. |

The wise thing to do with racism is to ignore it. You don't fight racism with police or laws. Heck HOW do you fight racism ? With the government ? I don't think that makes sense. You don't fight racism. There are much bigger problems than that in Quebec... The fact we aren't as greedy as the rest of our north americans friends explans why we're aren't as uptight as them, and that Montreal is one hell of a place to be. Do you believe that americans are happier because their GDP is higher ? We might not be acting smart with our money, but that's because we understand that life isn't only about numbers, economics and the IMF. Unlike the UK, the Germans or the States, for example. You want us to become greedy ? I think we're already greedy enough.... |
