Francois Calonne aka DJ Kal has a devotion for techno and house music that goes back to the age of 14, when he bought his first turntables. He began spinning in high school parties, where he introduced the first techno tracks when people didn’t even know what techno was. In 1993, Kal got serious with the music when he discovered wicked records from NYC and Chicago. From that time, he participated actively to the rising of Montreal’s rave scene. In 1997, he took his skills to a higher level when he got his diploma for sound engineering. Since then, aside from djing and collecting an enormous amount of vinyls, the studio has been his laboratory where his vision unfolds.
Apart from his great experience as a Dj and producer, Kal is still a club kid at heart and gets a kick out of sending a party crowd to a new-found heaven. He has a marked preference for "no bullshit" dancefloor House music, and doesn’t neglect the nasty beats of techno . DJ Kal’s great strength as a Dj, added to his mixing skills, is that he stays connected with the crowd and adapts himself to the venue.
François has been a resident in some of Montreal’s most famous clubs. The legendary Sona was his first home where he shared the decks with the most prestigious techno and house djs around. He also played at Limelight, Red-Lite, Gravity and some gigs around the world like France, New-York, Germany and Vancouver to name a few. He is also the man behind Montreal’s biggest house club, Club Opera on Sunday nights for the last 8 years + a monthly residencies at Circus After Hours.
To all of you over 1 million Quebecer listeners of "Minuit Le Soir", interesting tv program about nightlife on CBC’s french channel Radio-Canada, keep in mind that the music and club sounds of the program are produced by Kal. He also won a Gémeaux award for best music in a television series for that occassion.
