So far, if you arrive after 11pm you have little chance to get in. 10:30pm is a safe bet. They are closing doors at midnight for security reasons (overcrowded venue). That is having as a side effect the avoidance of drunkards who usually show up after midnight. If you see fights outside, it is precisely because they are being kept like that: out (Below I will address why that is in this particular case a very good thing, more so that in other clubs). So those who do like to do the bar thing before clubbing (usually the English-speaking crowd) have little chance to make it inside. Having a few pre-drinks at home as early as 9pm seems so far the best way.

Just to take it out of the way, a word on the good DJ’s being brought on Sundays, and the complaints being heard because of that choice of day:
In Montréal, Sundays are many times busier than Fridays (because people are getting healed from Thursday, which is probably only a bit less hardcore than Saturday). A good example of that were all the good years at the just killed Club Central Station (ex-Gallery) on Sundays. The crowd was not admittedly of the 9to5er type, but rather, they were people who own small and not so small businesses, grad/undergrad (last years) students, part time workers, people with Mondays off, and night workers who have their Sunday free (and hence Monday morning also). Needless to say, there were a number of people who just seemed to have a lot of money and no need to work. All these clubber types do form a crowd in Montréal.
Some people (sometimes myself) would even stay home on a Saturday in order to hit CCS on a Sunday. Those who know Comfort Zone in Toronto know what I’m talking about (obviously toned down 85% in the hardcoreness factor). In short, it had a loyal following that secured those Sundays for years. Sometimes there seemed to be more women than men, but that's another issue.
All in all, I so far see Sundays (which is lady's night, for the ladies who want to avoid springing the $15 cover) as going towards the less mainstream side, inviting what the EDM lover would call a "good DJ", but who would be, in turn, not so beloved by the more mainstream crowd, less DJ-follower, and more Saturday outgoer. Well, they are mainstream for some reason.

Now Opera:
You know that Opera was build at the site where Dome used to be (after they trashed it down completely). Opera is owned by the same group that used to operate both Dome and CCS. At the time, each club was perfectly geared towards: late teens and early 20's --the former--, and late 20's early 30's --the latter--, respectively. Marketing wise, it was smart.
Since both crowds have supposedly merged, you could now spot late teens and early 40's in the venue. If you check their website [ ] the possible ages for registration are 17-45. In principle that may be doable, if the example of other cultures have something to teach (Latin America, Europe, Eastern Europe), particularly given that Montréal is not a WASP city. Montrealers, especially the French and Euro crowd, go out dancing from 16 to 61 years of age. Here dancing is not a college thing, it’s rather an institution. However, one can see how fights could emerge every 30mins or so. For one thing, the display of money of some individuals (men and women alike) may be offensive for the hard working blue collar person who just wants to move to some decent electronic tunes after a week of hard work. Or the legendary scene of the older man displaying biceps and cash to the shame of the pencil-necky and poor male college student. Or the happy/sad exchange of girlfriends among the aforementioned parties. And on and on, situations that are more prone to happen when the crowd is that eclectic. So, as put above, it is a very good thing that the bulk of possible fights are kept out.

It seems that so far Opera arises as a bold experiment, again only doable in Montréal. Things are still settling down, and thus, things are yet to happen and be addressed. Me for one, I'll be once again doing the MTL-TO-by-train this week, just in time to get ready for freezing my brains at the line up at 11pm sharp. See you there good people.
